-- Advisory: This film contains profanity, violence, gore, sexual situations and multiple international incidents, including a particularly gory one involving a panda. In the interest of world peace, "Tropic Thunder" probably shouldn't open in China until the Olympics are over.

I'm Taking These Reviews With a Handful of Salt...
REVIEW OF THE REVIEWS
by Lupez Mendoza Jr - 07-13-08
Okay, so I've yet to see the Dark Knight... well, none of us have except for a few lucky pre-screeners. Yet, the movie and the buzz of it is already annoying me. Am I the only one thinking that one of Heath Ledger's final performances onscreen could possibly be tainted by the glorification and complete and total idolatry being made of it? He (Ledger) would have liked for us to be completely objective and critical of his performance, for he was a perfectionist. Perfectionists don't want their asses to be kissed and I know Ledger would not have wanted to be automatically catapulted to legendary status based purely on the tragic manner in which he died.
He would have liked it to be based off of his skill and ability as an actor (or at least that is what I gather from interviews he did and the comments of those who knew him best [although I'm sure those who knew him best will keep him to themselves and rightfully so]). No one is appreciating his true talent and ability to discern true criticism from total and biased adoration of his performance. Ledger deserved more than just an ass kissing review. Maybe if I watch it, I will think otherwise, but for now I'll call it like I hear it. Some of the descriptions and words used have really made me think twice about the sincerity of the review. I won't mention any names, but two of which have a tv show on movie reviews. They talk in cliches.
I will undoubtedly be seeing the Dark Knight when it comes to theaters... It looks great. I will not compare and contrast Heath Ledger's performance to Jack Nicholson's rendition of the Joker. The audacity for some to say that Ledger was more amazing at the Joker role than Nicholson is ludicrous and completely unnecessary. Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker was based on the campy and insanely flamboyant character that the comics of yesteryear evoked. Ledger's performance will undoubtedly be based off the later comics that were based on a more true to life and darker image of the caped crusader as well as his nemesis the Joker. The two characters need not be dissected or compared.
Those who know the comic book and true characters on which both roles are based off of, know both performances will without a doubt be considered genius in their own rights. But let's not say one is better than the other. I will watch Dark Knight and hope I can forget the ass kissing spectacle that has been the critics' praises. The only thing more transparent than biased reviews of movies, are biased reviews of presidential candidates.

Gore Hears a Who
Do you think there's an energy crisis? Don't you sometimes feel like Horton? People think I'm unAmerican since I own a Honda hybrid. Don't they know that their filling their tanks with foreign oil! (boy, I have all kinds of things to rant about)... And don't they know that the oil ain't gonna last. Like Who-ville, it's going to take a crisis... a total crash... to make people listen.
Go watch Horton Hears a Who and you'll know what I mean. What a great movie to expose kids to and use to discussion. You can insert all sorts of political agendas... people saw a McCarthism message in the 50's, abortion in the 90's. Why not use it to teach about the energy crisis now. Dr. Suess is the master of the word and this version of Horton does his writing justice. It's worth a look. Do you think there's an energy crisis? Don't you sometimes feel like Horton? Horton Hears a Baby?
Horton Hears a Who has spoken to a whole new generation. Pro-Life groups are using Horton's famous phrase "a person's a person no matter how small" and using it as an anti-abortion rallying cry. I'm sure Dr. Suess wasn't writing this as an anti-abortion piece, but he certainly might have been political. The book was originally published right after the McCarthy hearings of 1954. Many see the Wickersham Brothers as McCathy type characters. This goes to show that Dr. Suess's message appeals to multiple generations and that Horton might be a great work of literature because it can be applied to new ideas and future debates. So onward Horton! Thanks for delivering a movie that gives us something to think about, rather than the usual fluff.

Superbad: The funniest movie of the year...
Superbad was the best comedy of 2007. So, where is the nomination?
Like the 40 yr old virgin this film was not only atop teens and college kids 'best of' lists, it was atop those of movie critics throughout the country...so, why the snub? could it be the 180+ swears? the gross sexuality? what?

What a surprise. I think he might be one of the most diverse working actor/comedians out there. He has a sweetness and a vulnerability that is very appealing. What a surprise.
