Project: runways
It's Fashion Week in Boston and all over the city models are being prepped, wine poured, and the ensemble of every party guest quietly picked apart and assessed. New York it's not, but a few big names are popping in. Roberta Armani, niece of the designer Giorgio Armani and PR director of the company, paid her first visit to the city on Saturday, and held a swish, invite-only bash (above) at the Newbury Street boutique. For today's "I Have Nothing to Wear" fund-raiser, designer Nanette Lepore will be at her Newbury Street store and at the buzzy after-party at the Liberty Hotel. We looked in a few other fashion-related events this week, and offer a glimpse of the scene. - ERICA CORSANO
Rocking the catwalk at Venu
Day two of Boston Fashion Week welcomed what may be the biggest (and most pleasant) surprise of the week. Held at Theater District nightclub Venu, the event celebrated the launch of yourbeautyindustry.com, a website for beauty pros. But the main attraction was a fashion show that featured a mix of real people, models, and a cameo by Motown Records' Boston-based girl band Jada.
Karmaloop, the local, urban streetwear brand, provided the rocker-chic looks, including plaid jumpers and micro miniskirts, leopard-print leggings, and gobs of costume jewelry. They're not ensembles you'd wear to the office or to pick up the kids at soccer practice. But for the hipster-collegiate crowd, the looks were daring, well styled, and just plain fun.
The hair and makeup, a mix of glam rock and grunge, evoked pop stars Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani, and Lady Gaga. The foot-stomping gals cruised down the runway to high-energy, crowd-pleasing favorites like "When I Grow Up," by the Pussycat Dolls and "So What," by Pink, which had the everyone in the crowd dancing along.
Sandie Torres, who runs both Lily Artist Management and yourbeautyindustry.com, said Karmaloop was the obvious choice for the show. "We really wanted to highlight hair and makeup in our fashion show, so we looked for clothing sponsors who would allow the makeup artists and hair stylists to have a lot of creative control," says Torres. "We wanted to do something different and really have fun with it."
And they did. Overall, the show was edgy, brave, and a nice departure from Boston's typically safe and conservative fashion choices and events.
Bringing sexy back
Lingerie fashion shows always make us a little skeptical. Even at their best (Victoria's Secret on CBS, anyone?) the shows can be a bit, well, unsavory, what with all the thongs and bare skin and strutting. It's Fashion Week in Boston and all over the city models are being prepped, wine poured, and the ensemble of every party guest qu... more -
Project Runway Chooses Michelle Obama - Judging Political Fashion
Michelle Obama gets the fashion nod from Project Runway judge Tim Gunn. “No contest, Michelle.”
He thinks Mrs. McCain needs a makeover, while Mrs. Obama shows class and American style. Gunn says he loves her approachable look.
On the other hand, he says Cindy McCain has a button-down look that makes her look duct taped. He then weighs in with this pithy observation that “Fashion is a metaphor for personality.”

Nina Garcia: Calm, Cool, and Composed
Even though the guest judge was Natalie Portman on last night's Project Runway, the judge we looked forward to hearing from was Nina Garcia, the calm, cool, and composed one. This woman doesn't mince words nor does she use more words than what's necessary. Her comments are poetic and the rhythm of the delivery, priceless. On last night's episode she delivers a heart stopping line that sent Wesley home packing:
"Shiny, tight, and short is the quickest way to look cheap"
I think if there was such thing as a verbal bitch slap, that would have been it. You can't argue with Nina Garcia. Not when she's that impeccably put together: the hair, the makeup, the styling....distracting us from the obvious flaws. We have to give it to her though, she proves once and for all..... You don't have to be A-list to bring your A Game. Even though the guest judge was Natalie Portman on last night's Project Runway, the judge we looked forward to hearing from was N... more -
Bravo Catch Phrase Send Offs Report Card
Catch phrase send offs are typical components of all reality shows. Although we hate to admit it, the icon of bad taste himself, Donald Trump's "You're Fired!" is the gold standard. On the other hand, Kathy Hilton's send off "You're not on the list" in the mediocre I Want to Be a Hilton, does not even rate a bronze.
Since 2004, Bravo has been churning out reality shows a la Project Runway covering cooking, modeling, bitch slapping and hairstyling. And just when you thought Bravo was done exploiting the Project Runway format, comes the announcement of yet another reality show called American Artist hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker. The program will see budding painters and sculptors competing against each other in front of a panel of judges….Yes it sounds like an SNL parody to us too. We are praying for high drama fueled high jinx or the show may be a snooze. Also SJP better nail down a GREAT catch phrase for the send offs if she wants to score high marks from us. This is even a head scratcher for us. The best we can come up with is: "You're no Picasso, get out!" or “Go back to the drawing board.”
Anyway, while we're waiting, let's take a look at and rate some of Bravo's Reality TV send offs :
Project Runway, Grade: A+
"You're out"
Sometimes simple is the best solution. The way Heidi does it gives us chills. She is soooooo German.
Top Chef, Grade: A
"Please pack your knives and go."
We heart Padma. Any woman who enjoys eating but can still maintain her figure
(Paula Dean, please read this) scores high marks. Plus, she delivers the verdict with compassion.
Shear Genius, Grade: B+
"This was your final cut."
Looking like that at the age of 62, Jaclyn Smith can say and do anything. I can't take my eyes off her. What I like more than the way she delivers it is when she scolds the other contestants who are still in. Snip, snip!
Step It Up and Dance, Grade: C-
"The show is over. It's time for your last dance."
This two-sentence send off is a bit clunky. Plus it just seems a little too contrived to have Elizabeth Berkeley as the host of a reality dance program. Who knew being able to work a stripper pole qualified you as dance critic?
Make Me a Supermodel, Grade: D
"We cannot make you a supermodel"
Ugh.. Nikki Taylor's delivery is so wooden and Tyson, oi vey! Even though he is gorgeous, he should never be allowed to open his mouth.
Top Design, Grade: F
"See you later decorator"
Grown men shouldn't be allowed to say this especially if you are a renowned designer, Jonathan Adler. Every time he says it, I just cringe. I bet his hubby (who we do love, love, love) Simon Doonan coined that one. by Raoul Calleja with Dark Roots Catch phrase send offs are typical components of all reality shows. Sarah Jessica Parker lands Project Runway-esque Reality TV Show on Bravo!
The hourlong show has been described by the Elves team of Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz as a "Project Runway"-style competition series that takes on the art world. Aspiring artists compete to produce various styles of artwork (painting, sculpting, etc.), which is then judged by a panel of experts. The network declined to comment.

‘Project Runway’ moves from Bravo to Lifetime
What? Project Runway was a more credible reality TV show because it was on Bravo.
Check out this:
"Lifetime Networks and The Weinstein Company have entered into a groundbreaking partnership that will move cable’s top reality series, “Project Runway,” to the top network for women, Lifetime Television, beginning November 2008 with the premiere of season six. In its most recent season, the hit show averaged a 3.8 W18-49 Live + 7 day rating* and the Live + 7 rating for the March 5th finale was a 6.1 W18-49 AA%.
Heidi Klum, 'Project Runway’s' international supermodel host, and Tim Gunn, Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne, Inc. and mentor to the show’s contestants, are both fashioning their new home at Lifetime."
We will see if this is a good thing or a bad thing. What? Project Runway was a more credible reality TV show because it was on Bravo. Check out this: ... more -

Project Runway doesn't project fame
As Bravo's Project Runway got back underway in the US last night there were stern warnings from past winners to the designers hoping to break into the fashion cognoscenti this season. Previous winners Jay McCarrol and Chloe Dao have both found moderate success after winning season one and two respectively. However it seems future winners of the successful show are more likely to get a little brand exposure rather than roaring international runway stardom. Sorry kids.
