    • Start Wearing Purple....YAHOO!

Apparently Yahoo has caught the bizarre marketing bug. Today the company has launched "Start Wearing Purple", a campaign that is trying to capitalize on the color's reported association with "innovation and imagination" (I always thought it was tied to royalty). Purple has long been Yahoo's official color, though the logo displayed on its homepage is now a striking red.

The campaign is centered around the web portal Start Wearing Purple, which includes features like "Purple Picks"- a daily series of links to things which the Yahoo team has deemed Purple-worthy. There's also a special Flickr Account celebrating all things purple. And over at Purple Pranks, you can watch a few bizarre setups led by Improv Everywhere's Charlie Todd. Highlights include an elevator full of people singing a song about their favorite color whenever a stranger walks in.

The coolest component of the campaign is Purple Bikes. Yahoo has outfitted a fleet of 20 purple bicycles with solar powered cameras, GPS, and mobile Internet connectivity, which are now making their way across a dozen cities around the globe. The bikes will be taking (and automatically tagging) snapshots every sixty seconds, which chronicle each traveler's journey on a special Flickr map. You can read more about the Purple Bikes over at CrunchGear.

So is Start Wearing Purple a total bust? Major corporations launch marketing campaigns like this all the time in order to increase brand awareness and show their users that they have a soul. And as far as these campaigns go, Yahoo seems to have done a good job - the improv videos are funny, the bikes are cool, and the site is fun to play around with. Still, I can't help but wonder if the marketing dollars could be better spent convincing me to actually use Yahoo once in a while.

    • Google at Age 10 - Amazing Information

Google applied for incorporation as a business 10 years ago Thursday, according to a timeline supplied by the company. The application was accepted on Sept. 7, which is Sunday.

In that decade, the search engine company has quickly emerged as the most successful business on the Web, and many expect it to dominate the next era of computing as thoroughly as Microsoft dominated the era of personal computers.

Here's a quick snapshot of Google by the numbers along with some comparisons to Microsoft. The sources of the data are the companies, Yahoo Finance and comScore.

    • Yahoo plans software push for Net-enabled TVs

Yahoo on Wednesday announced an effort to provide the software underpinnings of network-enabled TV, a move that could transform not only what it means to watch TV but also what it means to advertise on it.

Though the TV experience has been spiced up by voting for American Idol contestants, it generally has retained its famously passive character. Yahoo wants to change this by bringing a version of its Yahoo Widget Engine, a software foundation that can run small applications called widgets, to network-enabled TVs.

This new version, called the Widget Channel, will resemble the version that's available for PCs, but will come with a different user interface to let programmers build widgets that can be controlled from a distance with a remote control, said Patrick Barry, Yahoo's vice president of connected TV at Yahoo.

Yahoo's hope is the move will bring its clout on the Internet to a new domain.

"Our goal is to aggregate a very large, multimillion-person audience across a number of devices with our standard platforms so we can start to address the audience in a unified consistent way, and ultimately create a liquid advertising market," Barry said.

Yahoo is working on partnerships with TV makers to have the software built in and integrated with TV functions. "I'm quite sure there are going to be products on this," Barry said. "I expect to see some things next year."

• Yahoo rejects joint proposal from Microsoft, Icahn

Yahoo! Inc., owner of the second-most popular search engine, rejected a restructuring proposal by Microsoft Corp. and billionaire investor Carl Icahn that would have included the sale of Yahoo's search business to Microsoft.

Yahoo's advertising agreement with Google Inc. offers ``superior financial value'' to the proposal from Microsoft and Icahn, the Sunnyvale, California-based company said in a Business Wire statement today.

Icahn has criticized Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Jerry Yang for failing to close a deal with Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker. Microsoft, which on May 3 withdrew an offer to buy Yahoo, said on July 7 it may renew talks for a deal if Icahn, who controls about 69 million Yahoo shares, succeeds in ousting Yang and his board.

``Carl Icahn and Microsoft presented us with a `take it or leave it' proposal,'' Chairman Roy Bostock said in the statement. ``It is ludicrous to think that our board could accept such a proposal. We will not be bludgeoned into a transaction that is not in the best interests of our stockholders.''

    • Yahoo announces mobile service

Barcelona, Feb 13 : Yahoo Inc announced a new mobile phone service that integrates e-mail, instant messaging and social networks.

Called Oneconnect, the service will be launched this spring, Marco Boerries, Executive Vice President for connected life at Yahoo, said on Tuesday at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.

Its open architecture means users and other companies can eventually add many other applications to it.

“The key driving force in opening up the platform is putting content into the device. No company can create these ecosystems alone. We have to be open,” Boerries said.

Boerries also announced cell phone carrier T-Mobile will offer Yahoo Inc’s internet search service to its European customers in late March, shifting away from Google.

T-Mobile will offer Yahoo mail and Yahoo messenger, as well as Yahoo’s onesearch, which provides news, financial information, photos, web pages and other services.

    • Yahoo rejects Microsoft's $44.6 billion bid

Yahoo spurned Microsoft's $44.6 billion takeover bid as inadequate Monday without explaining how its management will match the payoff that the slumping Internet icon's shareholders would have received had the unsolicited offer been accepted.

The rebuff had been widely anticipated after word of Yahoo's intention was leaked during the weekend.

In its formal response, Yahoo said its board had concluded Microsoft's unsolicited offer "substantially undervalues" the Sunnyvale-based company.

"Let’s forget about search for a moment, and Microsoft’s obvious need to buy a leading online company or face extinction.

Microsoft’s proposed $45 billion buy of Yahoo would give the Redmond, Wash company control over a top open source e-mail company, open source projects and an open source infrastructure. On September 17 of 2007, Yahoo bought Zimbra for $350 million. Yahoo’s infrastructure is built on BSD. Yahoo has released a myriad of software to the open source community and even sponsors some open source projects.

So this deal would put Microsoft directly into the open source software business."
