    • Deadly Tolls: Sick truckers causing fatal wrecks

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Tractor-trailer and bus drivers in the United States have suffered seizures, heart attacks or unconscious spells behind the wheel that led to deadly crashes on highways. Hundreds of thousands of drivers carry commercial licenses even though they also qualify for full federal disability payments, according to a new U.S. safety study obtained by The Associated Press.

The problems threatening highway travelers persist despite years of government warnings and hundreds of deaths and injuries blamed on commercial truck and bus drivers who blacked out, collapsed or suffered major health problems behind the wheels of vehicles that can weigh 40 tons or more."

They have some examples of truck drivers with medical conditions and what type of accidents they've gotten into, as well as statements from truck drivers. Gee, I always wondered why there are so many tractor trailer accidents!

    • No more speed cameras? Council challenges government over road safety

Speed cameras could be scrapped by a Conservative-ruled local authority.

Swindon Borough Council is reviewing its involvement with the local safety camera partnership scheme and considering whether to spend its £400,000-a-year contribution elsewhere.

Leader, Councillor Roderick Bluh, said: "We are not going to compromise safety, but we are taking the opportunity to review how we utilise the money. A huge amount of money is being raised by speed cameras and we are seeking better ways of ensuring road safety without penalising motorists."

It is believed to be the first time that a council in the UK has challenged the Government over the issue. The Conservative-run council is considering withdrawing from the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership after a shake-up of speed camera funding rules which mean the Treasury now keeps the proceeds of fines. The Government then makes road-safety grants to councils.

Tory councillor Peter Greenhalgh, head of highways, transport and strategic planning for Swindon, reportedly said the money should be spent on a range of local safety measures. "These are far more effective that speed cameras which, I feel, are a blatant tax on the motorist," he said. "They are being used as a cash cow. I do take exception to the positioning of some mobile speed cameras. They are designed to raise revenue."

      (Yahoo! News UK)

      ---

Do you agree that it is time to get rid of speed cameras and introduce other means of ensuring road safety? Or do you think speed cameras work and should stay?

    • Coal ash is more radioactive than nuclear waste!

"Over the past few decades a series of studies has called stereotypes [about coal and nuclear energy] into question. Among the surprising conclusions: the waste produced by coal plants is actually more radioactive than that generated by their nuclear counterparts. In fact, fly ash—a by-product from burning coal for power—contains up to 100 times more radiation than nuclear waste...

...Developing countries like India and China continue to unveil new coal-fired plants—at the rate of one every seven to 10 days in the latter nation. And the U.S. still draws around half of its electricity from coal. But coal plants have an additional strike against them: they emit harmful greenhouse gases...

With the world now focused on addressing climate change, nuclear power is gaining favor in some circles. China aims to quadruple nuclear capacity to 40,000 megawatts by 2020, and the U.S. may build as many as 30 new reactors in the next several decades. But, although the risk of a nuclear core meltdown is very low, the impact of such an event creates a stigma around the noncarbon power source.

The question boils down to the accumulating impacts of daily incremental pollution from burning coal or the small risk but catastrophic consequences of even one nuclear meltdown. "I suspect we'll hear more about this rivalry," Finkelman says. "More coal will be mined in the future. And those ignorant of the issues, or those who have a vested interest in other forms of energy, may be tempted to raise these issues again."

      ARE WE F*CKED OR WHAT?!?

Who's side are you on in the Coal VS Nuclear Rivalry? Shall I print up TEAM COAL and TEAM NUCLEAR shirts?

    • The Armani of armour: bulletproof fashion for London's super rich

They are designed for the super-rich businessman who has everything and is afraid of everyone. Bulletproof leather jackets, which mix style with a reassuring lining of body armour, are going on sale in Britain.

Miguel Caballero, the world's only maker of "designer bulletproof fashion", is opening an outlet at Harrods in London next week.

His collection, which includes suede jackets, blazers and raincoats, arrives amid a big increase in sales of personal security products aimed at Russian oligarchs, Arab sheikhs and city financiers.

From armoured cars and body armour to bodyguards and homes fitted with "panic rooms", no expense is spared to protect billionaires and their families.

Buyers choose from three levels of protection – the lowest guarantees cover against handguns and the highest against automatic weapons. The composition of the lining is a closely guarded secret, but it is not the traditional Kevlar body armour. Mr Caballero is not likely to be short of customers. London's super-wealthy feel they need protection.

Demand has risen in cities such as Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham, where people want protection from gunmen and car hijackers. Sales of conventional body armour are rising too.

Have the paranoid rich gone crazy? Is it a case of more money than sense? Or should everyone, not just the super-rich, be looking for better ways to protect ourselves in an increasingly violent society?

    • Facebook agrees child safety plan

Facebook is to add a slew of new safeguards to protect young users from sexual predators and cyber bullies.

At the heart of the changes are efforts to ban convicted sex offenders from the site and finding better ways to verify users' ages and identities.

The agreement was announced by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in a deal along with other attorneys general around America.

"This marks another watershed towards social networking safety," he said.

It will "protect kids from online predators and inappropriate content," he added.

It comes on the heels of a similar comprehensive agreement that 49 states and Washington, DC, made with MySpace last January.

      Seeking a gold standard

Mr Blumenthal, who co-chairs a working group of state attorneys general seeking to make social networking safer, said: "We are raising the safety bar, first with MySpace and now Facebook, and soon for other sites as we fight for an industry gold standard."

"Facebook and MySpace are showing how to aim higher and keep kids safer."

The world's second largest online networking site will build in more than 40 measures.

They include more automatic warning messages when underage members are in danger of giving out personal information to an unknown adult.

Facebook will also restrict the ability of users to change their listed ages to less than 18.

Facebook will also monitor a list of pornographic websites and links to such sites, aggressively remove inappropriate images and content, and increase efforts to remove groups for incest, paedophilia, cyber bullying and expel from the site individual violators.

      Trawling sites

With MySpace's 200 million users and Facebook's 70 million, there has been a growing concern that such social networking sites are being used by predators to find and groom victims.

This agreement is the latest attempt by law enforcement officers to shield children, following a wave of high-profile cases in which adults have been charged with trawling these sites to meet young members.

"Social networks that encourage kids to come to their sites have a responsibility to keep those kids safe," said North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Facebook found itself in the firing line last October when New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed the company, saying an undercover operation found the site responded too slowly to complaints of harassment and inappropriate conduct.

Facebook's chief privacy officer Chris Kelly said the site already had many safety features in place to protect users and that this was another step to enhance privacy.

"We have invested a great deal of effort to build a safer, more trusted environment," Mr Kelly said.

The only state not to sign on is Texas, which also had problems with January's MySpace pact.

"Texas continues to have concerns in the area in general, but we do continue our dialogue with the state of Texas," said Mr Kelly.

Officials said the safeguards in the Facebook and MySpace agreements could be extended to smaller sites as well.

    • Vegetables attack !!! Salmonella Poisoning

Oh my God! We don't know where its coming from !!!
It's tomatoes .... no its.... peppers.... wait.....

Don't eat vegetables !!! Hysteria !!! Panic !!! Kill the plants before they kill us !!!

More than 1,000 people now have become ill from salmonella initially linked to raw tomatoes, a sobering milestone Wednesday that makes this the worst foodborne outbreak in at least a decade. Adding to the confusion, the government is warning certain people to avoid types of hot peppers, too.

But people at highest risk of severe illness from salmonella also should not eat raw jalapeno and serrano peppers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged Wednesday. The most vulnerable are the elderly, people with weak immune systems and infants.

Perhaps there was some truth in that move "The Happening".

CDC food safety chief Dr. Robert Tauxe told The Associated Press:
“We are quite sure that neither tomatoes nor jalapenos explain the entire outbreak at this point. ... We’re presuming that both of them have caused illness.”Tauxe said. “But we really are working as hard and as fast as we can to sort out this complicated situation and protect the health of the American people.”

Added FDA food safety chief Dr. David Acheson: “It’s just been a spectacularly complicated and prolonged outbreak.”

The outbreak isn’t over, or even showing any sign of slowing, said Tauxe — with about 25 to 40 cases being a reported a day for weeks now, to a total of 1,017 known since the outbreak began on April 10.

Illnesses now have been reported in 41 states — and even four cases in Canada, although three of those people are believed to have been infected while traveling in the U.S. and the fourth is still being probed.

    • Red Cross discrimination

The Red Cross, although a humanitarian organization, continues to openly discriminate against homosexuals and men who sleep with men in their effort to keep the blood supply "safe". Although the guidelines tend to appear quite outdated in today's society, there doesn't seem to be any effort to change or update the current system of blood screening.

Anyone who actively gives blood knows about the barrage of questions that the Red Cross nurses ask during the screening process. These safety measures are delegated by the Food and Drug Administration. Since safety of our blood supply is paramount, this is a necessary precaution. But, out of these questions, one question in particular stands out: "have you had sexual contact with a male, even once, since 1977?"

If you answer "yes" to this question, you will be refused the opportunity to give blood.

The American Red Cross, on their website (under "donor eligibility guidelines") describes these guidelines as "intended to protect the health and safety of the donor as well as the patient who will receive the transfusion". The guidelines go on to classify men who sleep with men in the same category of intravenous drug users and people who exchange money for sex, under the heading "HIV/AIDS". This representation alludes to the rumor that gay men and men who sleep with men, along with intravenous drug users and prostitutes are the only persons who can become infected with HIV/AIDS. This is false representation of a safety measure, and propagates the rumor that people in this classification are the only individuals who can contract or spread HIV/AIDS.

These guidelines can be found at: http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/0,1082,0_557_,0...

It does not matter to the Red Cross if you are a monogamous gay male in a healthy relationship. It doesn't matter to the Red Cross if you've cheated on your spouse (straight or gay), it doesn't even matter if you've contracted syphilis or gonorrhea (as long as you wait 12 months before donating!)...but it does matter if you have "sex with men", or even fooled around with a man, even once in 30 years.

With all of our scientific knowledge about the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, it seems surprising that the Red Cross would continue to perpetrate false information about Homosexuals and the spread of HIV/AIDS in the name of safety. The Red Cross blames the Food and Drug Administration for this policy, and the FDA blames the Red Cross for not being discriminatory enough in protecting the blood supply. So we are left in a bind of open discrimination by our government and a world health organization.

The Red Cross and the FDA also fail to acknowledge that men (and women) who sleep with many partners are also at a high risk of becoming infected with HIV/AIDS. There is no question in the guidelines reflective of persons who have sexual contact with multiple partners, or persons who have unprotected sexual contact with others, or persons who engage in unsafe sexual practices. These persons, as long as they do not use intravenous drugs, charge for sex, or have sexual contact with men can still donate, and be a "hero".

Although our blood supply organizations should continue to carry out the highest standards of blood safety, the current guidelines must be revised to reflect our modern culture if organizations like the Red Cross intend to promote safety and well being. The truth about HIV/AIDS and other diseases must be reflective of scientific fact, and not old rumors. The truth about the safety of our blood supply is, if you look closely, a half truth riddled with discrimination.
The Red Cross, although a humanitarian organization, continues to openly discriminate against homosexuals and men who sleep with men i... more
