    • Dolphin giving birth caught on camera!

The unique moment was captured by a photographer at the Oltremare Aquarium at Riccione in Italy.

Normally after a year-long pregnancy, captive dolphins give birth at night and away from the public gaze. The calf emerged tail first - so it does not breathe in water - and was able to see and swim immediately.

    • Exposing the Japanese Dolphin Hunt

From a Special to the Japan Times:

Slipping away from the over-publicized 'Australia vs. Japan' whaling dialect, already rampant in the media, Boyd Harnell's informative article exposes what the Japanese are up to at home in their own waters.

Financed by Netscape's founder Jim Clark, U.S. conservation group Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) has finished its yearlong covert filming operation of the waters surrounding Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

Secret cameras hidden in rocks are used to capture violent footage of the blood-stained waters of Taiji's so-called 'killing cove', where an estimated 2,500 dolphins and pilot whales are killed annually.

The footage is being turned into a major documentary feature film destined for worldwide release this summer - "sure to shock the world."

    • Moko the dolphin saves the day when he leads beached whales to safety

"I don't speak whale and I don't speak dolphin," Mr Smith told the BBC, "but there was obviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude from being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea."

"Conservation officer Malcolm Smith told the BBC that he and a group of other people had tried in vain for an hour and a half to get the whales to sea.

The pygmy sperm whales had repeatedly beached, and both they and the humans were tired and set to give up, he said.

But then the dolphin appeared, communicated with the whales, and led them to safety.

The bottlenose dolphin, called Moko by local residents, is well known for playing with swimmers off Mahia beach on the east coast of the North Island.

Mr Smith said he gave the dolphin a pat to say thank you"

    • Where do YOU stand on Whaling?!?

The image displayed is the Nantucket flag. But I'm confused, I thought "we" realized the brutality of whaling decades ago.

I can say nothing other than this video infuriates me to no end. I cannot believe that this sort of practice carries on.

    • Dolphin Facts

A bottlenose dolphin has been found with an extra set of fins, providing further evidence that ocean-dwelling mammals once had four legs and lived on land, scientists have claimed.

      Here are some Dolphin Facts:

There are almost forty species of dolphin in seventeen genera.

In the wild, these sleek swimmers can reach speeds of over 18 miles (30 kilometers) an hour.

They surface often to breathe, doing so two or three times a minute.

The name is originally from Ancient Greek The animal's name can therefore be interpreted as meaning "a 'fish' with a womb"

A dolphin's dorsal fin is as distinctive as a person's face.

Dolphin's ancestors once lived on land and looked similar to wolves, although they were more closely related to cows.

Dolphins are said to spend about one-third of their day sleeping or resting, one-third eating and one-third playing or making love.

Bottlenose dolphins track their prey through the expert use of echolocation. They can make up to 1,000 clicking noises per second.

They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly eating fish and squid.

Dolphins, like cows, have two stomachs — one for storing food and one for digesting it.

A dolphin's brain, in relation to the size of its body, is larger than the brains of chimpanzees and great apes.

Dolphins swallow fish whole, despite the 100 teeth in their mouths. The teeth are used to grasp prey.

Dolphins can jump as high as 20 feet out of the water.
