Abu Dhabi's Emirates Palace Hotel is offering an eye-wateringly expensive seven-day break for two people in what is being billed as the "ultimate holiday experience".
A hotel spokeswoman, described it as a "once-in-a-lifetime break in the stunning grandeur of one of the most the expensive hotels ever built". Past guests at the hotel have included Jennifer Lopez, Sir Elton John and Justin Timberlake.

Ah package holidays, piling the masses on to cheap flights around the world and thrusting plenty of booze down their necks to keep them sedated. It is a fine line between sedation and 100% mental and it would appear on this First Choice Boeing 767 one gentleman took a lil trip to crazy town!
I always knew there was a reason I went on holiday in the off season!

Our Founding Fathers On Liberty and Tyranny
To me this is what the Fourth of July is all about. Remembering the men who sacrificed all they had to take the journey to a more perfect union... a free union. We don't truly have that today, and the main reason why is because we as a people have to really want it. I question now if we really do, and that is sad. These words of wisdom and warning from men who though flawed were brilliant and who knew something themselves about slavery of the mind and soul are words to be reflected on. As John Adams said, "Liberty once lost, is lost forever." We as a people are allowing liberty to slip away as we distract ourselves and lose our focus on these words. How I wish we had men of such courage and brilliance as these to once again point us in the right direction. However, their words can be the inspiration we need to now do that. The question is: will we?

No fireworks for 4th of July?!?!?
Those seeking the oohs and aahs of traditional Fourth of July fireworks could be sadly disappointed this year: Public displays and sales of boxed firecrackers are being canceled or scaled back across the nation, victims of a sluggish economy, wildfire fears and product shortages caused by a warehouse fire in China.
With Northern California already battling a string of wildfires, fire officials in Scotts Valley, south of San Jose, concluded that going ahead with the annual show would send the wrong message when residents have been asked to refrain from setting off even tiny sparklers in their backyards.
Fire Chief Mike McMurry, who has worked in Scotts Valley for 31 years, could not recall another time when dry weather snuffed out the show. "It's all about the severity of the conditions right now," he said.
Aside from the fire danger, local governments are also short of money because of the slumping economy. Fireworks supplies are petering out, too, because China is running short of ports from which to ship the dangerous cargoes abroad.
In Texas, four parched counties obtained emergency declarations prohibiting the sale of personal fireworks. In Massachusetts, several towns said fewer donations from corporate sponsors made it too expensive to mount local celebrations.
The average aerial display lasts about 15 minutes and costs $10,000. Larger cities spend about $100,000 for bigger shows. Those seeking the oohs and aahs of traditional Fourth of July fireworks could be sadly disappointed this year: Public displays and sal... more -

Goodbye cheap air travel!
Last week, British Airways' Willie Walsh suggested that rising fuel costs could signal the end of the decade-long cheap flights bonanza. Personally, this comes as no great surprise - the emails I receive via my website seat61.com suggest that we're already falling out of love with flying. It's not as cheap as it once was, as budget carriers have added baggage fees and booking fees to shore up their profits. Any glamour associated with flying is long gone, thanks to security hassles, two-hour check-ins and frequent delays. And last but not least, the environmental impact of short haul flights is prompting many of us to think before we fly.
So will we be forced to swap Geneva or Grenoble for Bognor or Blackpool? Far from it. Europe's high-speed train operators now offer "budget" fares of their own, and the less stressful, more environmentally sound overland option is often a more practical alternative than the average short-haul flier imagines. If you book a couple of months in advance, it's not difficult to nab a £59 return ticket on Eurostar from London to Paris, then a ticket from Paris to Geneva by TGV (French high speed train) from £22 each way. No baggage fees or weight limits, city centre to city centre with no extra to pay to reach the airport, and infants under four go free.
True, Geneva or Grenoble are a few hours further away by train than by easyJet or Ryanair, even after remembering that a two-hour flight probably takes four or five hours once check-in and ground transportation are included. But is this necessarily such a bad thing? People who only ever travel by air or motorway typically regard the journey itself as wasted time, unproductive time, a negative experience to be minimised. Which is a shame, as a journey by train (or by sea) can be quality time with your family away from door bells and phone calls, a chance to relax and enjoy scenery over a glass of red, or (if you're working) productive time with laptop plugged in at your seat and no interruptions from the boss. A train journey is a gentle and welcome introduction to the country you're visiting, a chance to "decompress" at leisure instead of being plunged in all too quickly after that tedious teleport from Luton or Stansted. There really is more to travel than just the destination.
So if the cheap flights start to disappear, don't feel that you'll be stuck at home. Unless you want to be, of course! Last week, British Airways' Willie Walsh suggested that rising fuel costs could signal the end of the decade-long cheap flights bonanz... more -

Mother's Day creator likely 'spinning in her grave'
Pity the mother of Mother's Day.
Anna Jarvis - never married, never a mother - campaigned for almost a decade to dedicate a day to honour mothers. She chose a Sunday because she wanted it to be a "holy" day, not a holiday, and the second Sunday in May because it was the anniversary of the death of her own beloved mother.
Jarvis wanted us to show our mothers how much their devotion and sacrifice matters, how we esteem the "truth, purity and broad charity of mother love." She expected us to do it with simple gestures - in her opinion, a single white carnation and a heartfelt letter were best. Her carnations were handed out at the first Mother's Day ceremony exactly 100 years ago.
And look at how we repaid her.
Throughout the decades, the "holy" day has evolved into a retailing and marketing bonanza, each year becoming more and more a chance to spend money rather than time or effort, until we arrive at today, when retailers can, with a straight face, suggest you "show Mom you care" by buying their platinum charm bracelet, their "Thanks A Bunch" floral arrangement, or their discounted patio furniture (nothing says filial love like a powder-coated aluminum table you scored for 50 per cent off).
"I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit," Jarvis complained, dismissing greeting cards as "a poor excuse for the letter you are too lazy to write."

Mother's Day founder Anna Jarvis opposed to holiday's commercialism
Cleveland.com reports:
"Anna Jarvis mothered Mother's Day a century ago. To see what her baby grew into . . . oh, how it would break her heart.
Jarvis despised attempts to commercialize the "holy day" that she launched in 1908 in memory of her mother, Ann. She fought tenaciously until her death to shield Mother's Day from "the hordes of money-schemers" that were hawking flowers, cards and candy". Cleveland.com reports: ... more -
