    • China quake focus shifting from rescue to relief

Heavy rain over southwest China on Wednesday is likely to interrupt relief efforts and raise the risk of reservoir breaches in earthquake-stricken areas, where tents have become the most-wanted item.

Thousands of aftershocks and a forecast of more rain compounded the difficulties for military, government and private workers trying to deliver aid and ensure millions get shelter as the focus of relief work turned inevitably from rescue to relief.

New survivors were still being found in the rubble on Tuesday, eight days after the disaster. One was a 60-year-old woman who Xinhua said had survived on rainwater.

But a Japanese rescue team pulled out of the area on Tuesday after failing to find anyone alive under the ruined buildings and will be replaced by a medical team.

Officials said China needed up to 3 million tents to house an estimated 5 million people left homeless by May 12's 7.9-magnitude quake in Sichuan province.

Vice provincial governor Li Chengyun on Tuesday appealed other parts of China and the outside world to donate tents.

Premier Wen Jiabao ordered the supply of 250,000 temporary housing units -- simple steel structures normally used by construction workers -- to the quake area by June 30 and the number should reach 1 million in three months, state media said.

Many residents of Chengdu, the provincial capital hit by a persistent drizzle on Wednesday, spent the night in tents, fearful of building collapses.

    • China: Quake death toll jumps past 8,500

Thousands of people have been killed by Monday's powerful earthquake in just one affected region of central China, its government said, with the toll expected to keep rising as bodies are retrieved from schools, homes and factories.

Rescuers try to help a child trapped in the rubble at Juyuan Middle School in Dujiangyan City.

1 of 3more photos ยป The death toll quickly rose throughout the day. State-run news agency Xinhua said it had reached 8,533 in Sichuan Province by Monday night, and another 10,000 were believed to be injured.

It reported that authorities were yet to reach Wenchuan County -- which sits at the epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake with a population of about 112,000 -- because of damage to roads.

In Beichuan County, close to Wenchuan, the number of deaths was estimated at more than 3,000, with 80 percent of the buildings destroyed.

In addition, at least 48 people were killed in the northwest Gansu Province, Xinhua said.

Several hundred students were also feared to be buried in collapsed school buildings, the agency said.

China's Seismological Bureau said the earthquake had affected more than half the country's provinces and municipalities.

President George W. Bush released a statement saying the United States "stands ready to help in any way possible."

    • Death toll climbs from Missouri, Oklahoma storms

At least 20 people were killed as tornadoes and severe weather swept the Midwest before rumbling into the Southeast on Sunday morning, according to emergency management agencies.

In the central Georgia town of Dublin, storms killed at least one person, Lisa Janak of the state Emergency Management Agency said.

The nearby town of Kite, home to about 200 residents, was destroyed, she said.

"The report I am getting is the whole town is gone," said Janak. "I have worked in emergency management for eight years and I never received a report like that before."

At least 80,000 residents were without electricity Sunday, mostly concentrated in the metro Atlanta and Macon areas, Georgia Power officials told The Associated Press.

    • Northwest Gets Pounded With More Snow

Avalanche centers in the West issued warnings Tuesday as new storms lined up following a system that buried many areas in heavy snow, closing government offices, causing havoc on roads and even shutting down one ski resort.

A search was under way Tuesday for three snowmobilers missing in the Colorado mountains. Blowing snow and avalanche danger caused new highway closings in Wyoming and Washington, where some schools were closed for a second consecutive day.
