Elderly Woman Frees Child Slaves In Nepal
Olga Murray laughs when she's called a modern-day abolitionist. It is, however, a fair description.
This 82-year-old retired lawyer from California now spends half of her time living in Katmandu, Nepal, where she works to free child slaves.
"It's very difficult to think that in the 21st century, this is a practice," said Murray. But, she argued, "it's happening all over the world, and a lot of people don't know about it."
She is no tourist. She and her organization, Friends of Needy Children, have come up with a remarkably simple and successful method of liberating hundreds of young, female slaves.
For generations in Nepal impoverished families from the countryside have been selling their daughters to wealthy families where the girls, known as "kamlaris," are forced to do housework.
When asked why parents would sell their children, Murray explained, "It's not because they don't love them. It's like they have no choice. Sometimes it's a choice between selling their girl & and feeding the rest of their family."
The practice has become so widespread and socially acceptable that we were able to meet and interview slave girls and their owners.
According to the non-profit group Free The Slaves there are an estimated 27 million slaves in the world right now -- more than at any time in recorded history.

biological clock affects male fertility
The biological clock ticks for men as well as women, doctors warn today, after research found that male fertility begins to decline when they reach their mid-30s.
Doctors said men who wait until their 40s before starting a family face a greater chance of their partner having a miscarriage, because of the poorer quality of their sperm.
Researchers examined patient records of more than 12,000 couples treated at a fertility clinic in Paris, and separated out the influence of male and female ages on the couples' chances of having a baby.
They found that women whose partners were 35 or older had more miscarriages than those who were with younger men, regardless of their own age. The men's ages also affected pregnancy rates, which were lower in the over-40s.
Doctors have long known that a woman's fertility drops sharply in her mid to late 30s, but the effect of age on male fertility is less well understood. Among women, miscarriage rates typically double to 40% between the ages of 20 and 40.
The findings are a concern, researchers say, because of the trend for men to delay fatherhood. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show the typical age of married fathers rose from 29.1 in 1971 to 34.1 in 2003. The age of men having children outside marriage has remained stable at about 30. And, for the first time, more women in Britain are giving birth in their early 30s than in their late 20s. Having children makes you unhappy
Despite deep-rooted cultural beliefs, studies find that having children really doesn't make you happy, or at least happier than people who don't have kids.
A study by Daniel Gilbert cites that 'marital satisfaction' sharply declines with the birth of the first-born child and only again inclines when the last child leaves the home. Gilbert even claims that parents are happier doing seemingly mundane tasks like grocery shopping or sleeping than actually spending time with their kids.
Robin Simon also conducted a comprehensive study of 13,000 Americans and came to the conclusion that no matter what type of parent (single, couple, divorced, step, etc.), they never reported better emotionally than people who had never had children at all. Simon says "Parents experience lower levels of emotional well-being, less frequent positive emotions and more frequent negative emotions than their childless peers,"
The cracking of this cultural myth may have to do with the increasingly complex lifestyle that comes with our current generation. High costs to raise kids, working outside of the home, lack of extended family support--all these factors can tie in to making parental life a chaotic and stressful one. Add to this the fact that most people are getting married later in life and are jumping from the highs of youthful freedom of going out and drinking and partying, to the abstemious-ness of rearing and caring for children.
What are your thoughts? Kids=Happiness? Or Kids=Hell? Despite deep-rooted cultural beliefs, studies find that having children really doesn't make you happy, or at least happier than people... more -

Toddler found wandering the street holding beer bottle
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL -- A 24-year old Jacksonville Beach woman is facing felony child neglect charges Thursday after police say neighbors found her two year old son wandering in the street wearing a soiled diaper carrying a beer bottle.
Jessica Nicole Hughes was arrested when she returned home after being contacted by police.
She was described as extremely intoxicated at the time of her arrest.
Authorities called Jax Beach Fire & Rescue to check on the little boy, who was bleeding from a piece of broken glass in his foot, and to be sure he hadn't consumed alcohol.
"Fortunately, it did not appear the child had ingested any alcohol," said Jax Beach Sergeant Thomas Bingham.
Police got a call from neighbors around 9 o'clock wednesday night. "Two neighbors call us saying, 'hey! There's this 2-year old child walking around... (with a ) soiled diaper, glass is in the bottom of his foot -walking around with a beer bottle," said Jacksonville Beach Police Public Information Officer Thomas Bingham.
According to police, the boy's mother, Jessica Hughes, said she dropped the child off at their apartment where her fiancee' was napping. She then went out.
The toddler's soon-to-be step-Dad told First Coast News little Caleb did what most two year olds do. He explored. "He has toys. He loves to climb. And you know Kids love to climb!" said Michael Edenfield.
"He climbed up, unlocked the door and the next thing you know he was out here!"
Mike Edenfield was awakened to neighbors and blue flashing lights to learn the toddler was out.
Police reached Mom on the phone and told her to come home.
"And when she came home, she was absolutely obliterated!" said Sgt. Bingham.
"(She was) Extremely intoxicated. Had difficulty standing. The investigation continued and the officers ended up arresting her for child abuse and child neglect."
Paramedics pulled a sliver of glass from the boys foot and determined that he had not consumed any alcohol.
The Department of Children And Families was called and an investigator went to the apartment on the 200 block of 10th Avenue North. The DCF determined the child was safe in the care of Edenfield while the boy's mother was taken to jail.
Caleb's soon-to-be stepfather is grateful the boy is unharmed, but says the arrest of his mother creates an instant hardship.
"It means now I can't work until I find a babysitter! And I don't have a babysitter so now that puts me behind on my rent. All my bills are going to get behind because of this little incident."
If convicted on the third degree felony charges, Hughes could be jailed for up to five years. Hughes is being held at the Duval County Jail on $5,000 bond. World first pregnant man - Thomas Beatie
Thomas Beatie, 34, of Bend, Oregon, used to be a woman before undergoing gender reassignment surgery.
He first claimed he was pregnant in an article headlined "Labour of love" in a gay magazine, the Advocate, last month.
Many were sceptical, particularly after Beatie said he would not give any interviews until April Fools' Day.
But speaking on Oprah Winfrey's US chat show yesterday, he said: "Different is normal and love makes a family. And that's all that matters."
Beatie appeared with his wife, Nancy, for the interview. The audience was shown footage of his ultrasound scan and heard the sound of a heartbeat.

Schools to kids: "We'll pay you if you study harder"
Schools, under pressure to boost student achievement, are offering incentives — field trips and cash, for example — to motivate students.

A very slippery slope ... it's one thing for parents and grandparents to give out dimes and dollars for good grades every quarter, but quite different to institutionalize that behavior within school walls.

Spanish kids treated for mobile phone addiction
That's right, two Spanish kids have been admitted to a mental health clinic by their parents because they can't carry out normal activities without their handsets.
The kids, ages 12 and 13, were reportedly doing badly at school as well as lying to their relatives to fund their phone addiction.
A Spanish addiction expert spoke on the matter saying that these cases could be the "tip of the iceberg", and that mobile phone addiction "could definitely be a danger in the future".

I'll breastfeed till they're EIGHT!
Stella is proud that her children are acknowledged to be among the eldest to be breastfed. Indeed, she is campaigning for other women to follow her example.
'As a mother, you are totally responsible for the health of your baby, and I consider part of that duty to be breastfeeding - it might not be best for every woman, but it is best for every baby. My children don't strictly need breast milk now, but they are still getting benefits,' says Stella, from Ludlow in Shropshire.
'Of course, some people are squeamish - they don't like three-month- olds feeding in public, let alone three-year-olds sitting on your knee - but you wouldn't throw a blanket over a sheep feeding a lamb in a field, would you? It's what nature intended.
-- I wonder how the children will feel about this when they are older. Breast feeding is totally natural, but until they are 8? Hmmmm, not convinced myself.
