    • Former "Laugh In" writer and Emmy award winner Jack Hanrahan Dies Destitute

Jack Hanrahan wrote for some of the most popular television shows in the 1960s and 1970s, including "Get Smart," "Police Woman," "The Waltons" and "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour."
In December of 2006, Hanrahan arrived in Cleveland from Californian by bus, penniless and disheveled, his tangled hair hanging to his shoulders and smoking self-rolled cigarettes.

All he had were the clothes on his back, a bag of tobacco and rolling papers. Even his false teeth were missing. And his Emmy was in hock.

Hanrahan tried to connect with relatives here, but his state of mind and needs were too much to handle, said a nephew. So Hanrahan lived on the streets

    • Monomyth - Joseph Campbell

The Monomyth (often referred to as "the hero's journey") is a description of a basic pattern found in many narratives from around the world. This universal pattern was described by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). A noted scholar of novelist James Joyce, Campbell borrowed the term monomyth from Joyce's Finnegans Wake.

Campbell's insight was that important myths from around the world which have survived for thousands of years, all share a fundamental structure.

In a well-known quote from the introduction to The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell wrote:
? A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.?

The monomyth has influenced a number of artists, musicians, poets, and filmmakers, including Bob Dylan and George Lucas. Mickey Hart, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead had long noted Campbell's influence and agreed to participate in a seminar with him in 1986 entitled From Ritual to Rapture.

Campbell's work has been consciously applied by a wide variety of modern writers and artists, for example, in creating screenplays for movies. The best known is perhaps George Lucas, who has acknowledged a debt to Campbell regarding both the original Star Wars trilogy and its prequels.

    • Abortion in Hollywood

Following the recent slew of girl-has-baby-happy-ending films this year, Ellen Goodman discusses the representation of the right to choose in recent US films. Literate and absorbing. I think she's absolutely right that Hollywood has a Disneyfied outlook on what it means to keep a baby. One commenter on AlterNet argues, 'no baby - no film', but I'd go and see a film about a girl choosing to have an abortion. What are your thoughts? • Hollywood Director wants us to choose his next project!

Joe Carnahan, director of "Narc" and "Smokin' Aces" wants the general public to decide which, of the two stories he has adapted into screenplays, he should make next. There are links below to view both of his scripts as well as a link to his blog where you can tell him personally what you think of the scripts and which he should produce. This is an amazing and completely rare opportunity to share your thoughts with and influence the creative and professional decisions of an important current filmmaker. Don't take it for granted!

    • As Writers’ Strike Looms, Stakes Are Higher for TV Than Film

Movie executives generally consider screenwriters to be expendable. But television writers — and particularly the writer-producers who serve as show runners — wield considerable power over a television show, so much so that it often is not clear where their writing duties end and their producing duties begin.

That has big implications if Hollywood writers go on strike next month. Certainly the dozens of producers who also serve as writers on some of television’s biggest hits, and are members of the writers’ union, would not be able to do at least half of their jobs. Whether they could perform any of their duties — or whether most television shows would have to shut down production almost immediately — is an open question.
