Sweet smell of commuting: Berlin's trains to receive scent makeover
If you have ever been on one of Berlin's trains, you will know that they smell of many things, not all of them pleasant. However, this is about to change as German rail, which runs the Berlin S-Bahn system, has announced plans to lace the trains with its very own de-odoring odor.
An employee came up with the ambitious idea to neutralize urban smells with an "S-Bahn perfume" contest, to find ways to improve the experience of commuters. The preliminary stages, underway soon, will involve "test sniffing" with trials being run in 100 of the city's 620 local trains.
The initiative is loosely based on a similar project in the Paris Metro, which introduced a fragrance called "Madeleine" in 1999. Named after what was formerly the French capital's smelliest stop (and a delicious pastry), the perfume has notes of orange, lemon and lavender.
The Deutsche Bahn abandoned the idea of using Madeleine in Germany after several trial revealed that the fragrance proved too weak to overcome Berlin's subway odors. Perfume can put unborn child's fertility at risk
Pregnant women have been advised to avoid perfumes or scented creams as they contain chemicals that can increase the risk of unborn boys developing infertility in later life.
Edinburgh University researchers claimed a crucial window between eight and 12 weeks of pregnancy determined future reproductive problems in male offspring. Professor Sharpe also said the chemicals may increase the risk of baby boys developing other reproductive conditions in later life, including testicular cancer.
He added that women planning on becoming pregnant should avoid putting any cosmetic products on their skin which could then be absorbed into their bodies. Pregnant women have been advised to avoid perfumes or scented creams as they contain chemicals that can increase the risk of unborn bo... more -
Perfumed Mother’s Milk
Mothers pass many things on to their babies — including chemicals from soaps and personal care products. A new study of Swedish moms finds that those who used scented laundry detergent or lots of perfume had elevated amounts of synthetic musks in their breast milk.
How these synthetic musks act in the body still isn’t clear, says study coauthor Anders Glynn of the Swedish National Food Administration and Uppsala University in Sweden. Scientists have found other fat-loving compounds in breast milk, including PCBs and certain pesticides with clearly detrimental health effects. While finding chemicals in breast milk raises concern about childhood exposure, most experts agree that the benefits of nursing still far outweigh the risks.
The new study, published online in Environmental Science & Technology, looked for trends in the amounts of seven synthetic musks in new moms’ breast milk over a seven-year period. These artificial compounds give scent to many products and also act as longevity enhancers, or “carriers,” for other smells. Manufacturers favor synthetics over natural musks, which are expensive and often come from endangered animals.
Previous research has documented synthetic musks in breast milk in women from the United States, Denmark and Germany, but this new work is the first to correlate quantities of musks with the women’s product use. The team found that women who used a lot of perfume during pregnancy had high amounts of the musk HHCB in their milk. Levels of the musk AHTN were elevated in the milk of women who used perfumed laundry detergent. Broadband boost for island monks
An island community of monks were so fed up with their slow internet connection, they've gone broadband.
The Cistercian monks live on Caldey Island, three miles off the coast of Tenby in Pembrokeshire. The self sustaining community sells homemade perfume and sweets over the internet for their income.
Father Daniel said: "Patience is one of the characteristics of monastic life, but even the patience of the Brothers was being tested by our slow internet". Over the last five years, the monks internet shop has increased its turnover by 100%. But their slow dial-up connection was hampering their business. So they worked with a local telecommunications firm who have used a signal from a communications tower on the mainland to transmit wireless broadband to the island. "Broadband access has made a huge difference to our internet usage," said Father Daniel.

"The singer has been unveiled as the spokesmodel for French fragrance house Parfums Givenchy, and the company revealed he was chosen because he has ‘ redefined modern elegance’."
He is rather elegant. What will the ads will look like, what will the perfume smell like? Seems very odd to me. He's more of a Stetson man, or Sean John :) Wow, a movie and now perfume. ... more -
