    • Russia-Cuba ties worry U.S.

WASHINGTON -- Amid rising tensions over Georgia, U.S. officials are increasingly concerned that Russia is moving to rebuild one of the most dangerous features of the old Soviet Union's security structure -- its alliance with Cuba.

Moscow has been signaling that it wants to restore a long relationship with Havana that included not only economic ties, but also military and intelligence cooperation. The relationship brought the world to the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, when Russia secretly installed nuclear missiles on the island.

Russia warns against any action as EU prepares to meet
West struggles to counter Moscow's move
Russia sees Georgia outcome as proof of its dominance
U.S. officials believe that Russian statements are partly bluster, intended to dissuade the United States and its allies from moving the NATO alliance and military equipment, including missile defense sites, closer to the Russian border. And some experts question how interested Cuba is in rebuilding close ties with Russia.

But at a time when Russia has intervened forcefully in Georgia and is extending the global reach of its rebuilt military, some senior officials fear it may not be only bluster.

Russia "has strategic ties to Cuba again, or at least, that's where they're going," a senior U.S. official said recently, speaking, like others, on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive implications of the assessments.

Does the possibility of renewed alliances between Russia and Cuba concern you?

      Yes
      No
The officials said they doubted the Russians would risk stationing nuclear bombers on Cuba. But some believe that Moscow might seek to restore its once-energetic intelligence cooperation with Havana, and to resume limited military cooperation, possibly including refueling stops for aircraft and warships.

In the current environment, such contacts would make U.S. officials uneasy, serving as a reminder of a military relationship between Havana and Moscow that stretched from the Cuban Revolution in 1959 until a weakened, post-Soviet Russia finally closed a massive electronic intelligence complex in Lourdes near Havana in 2001.

One senior military officer said a return of Russian ships or planes could force additional U.S. deployments in the region. But the Bush administration and Pentagon declined to comment publicly on the implications.

"It is very Cold War retro," said a government official. "The topic could be reminiscent of the Cuban missile crisis, and that is a chapter that people don't want to revisit."

The Russian Defense Ministry dismissed a report in the newspaper Izvestia in July that quoted an unidentified Russian official as saying the government intended to begin basing Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack and Tupolev Tu-95 Bear nuclear bombers in Cuba.

However, the report was taken seriously enough in Washington that Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, the new Air Force chief of staff, said during his Senate confirmation hearing at the time that sending the bombers would cross a "red line in the sand."

Last month, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice complained about Russia's increasing reliance on its military to remind the world of its power. She criticized Russia's military advance into Georgia, a former Soviet republic, and its increasingly frequent patrols by long-range nuclear bombers in U.S.- and NATO-patrolled ocean lanes near northern Europe, Alaska and elsewhere.

    • Cuban Rocker Critical of Castro Out of Jail, Fined $28

Following a two-hour trial, the court ordered Gorki Aguila to pay $28 and released the 39-year-old singer.

"I am very proud of all the people who have supported me, and I feel even more hate for this tyranny," Aguilar told reporters upon his release.

The fine is big money in a country where nearly everyone, Aguila included, works for the state and takes home an average of $19.50 per month.

But Aguila would have faced far more severe punishment had he been convicted of "social dangerousness," which the government defines as violating "communist morality." That charge is often used to detain would-be offenders before they have a chance to commit a crime.

Elizardo Sanchez, head of the independent Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation took the unusual step of attending the trial — which was open to Aguila's father and band mates as well as about 10 of his supporters, but closed to reporters.

      Story continued at link...

    • 26th Parallel: Video: Miami in the Early 80s

I received this interesting and very disturbing video below via e-mail several days. The 6+ minute video looks back at the crime wave which hit Miami in the late 70s and early 80s, right around the time of the infamous Time Magazine article "Paradise Lost". A central theme of the video is the supposed role played by Colombian drug traffickers and people who came to Miami via the Mariel boatlift of 1980 in the sharp increase in homicides during that era.
A little context: the video was posted by a group called Immigration Control Florida (ICF), whose opening paragraph on their website states:

ImmigrationControlFlorida.com / ICF requests that Americans join our group to support our stated goals to save America. Our group worked to stop the 125,000 Mariel Cuban refugees that illegally invaded Miami-Dade County that destroyed Miami with 50,000 murderers, psychopaths, criminals, criminally insane, hitmen, drug pushers, and enforcers making "Miami the murder capital of the world" with 615 murders in only 1 year with so many bodies that the Miami Medical Examiner had to rent a refrigerated truck to store the excess bodies at a cost of $150 million in 1 year making "Miami a 3rd World Country" ! (U.S.News & World Report -Jan.16, 1984 - page 29).

Let me make something totally clear: I am against illegal immigration, but ICF doesn't even try to conceal their disdain for any immigrant group, in particular Cubans from Mariel. Yes, there were criminals mixed in with regular folks who came over via Mariel. Yes, there was a strain on the services the Miami community could provide, but I don't know where and how ICF got the "50,000" number they use to slime an entire community. As we know, the collective group from Mariel has turned out to be yet another in the long tradition of Cuban-American success stories, despite the initial shock of Miami having to absorb 125,000 new arrivals in Miami in only a few short months.

In short, ICF sounds like nothing more than a bunch of bigots and racists who give reasonable folks' objections to illegal immigration a bad name (as well as provide unnecessary fodder to those who feel naturally inclined to bash anything resembling securing borders).

Some of the quotes in the video are quite over-the-top and no doubt representative of the ethnic conflict which gripped Miami during that time. Riots in Liberty City in 1980, Mariel a few months later, passing of "English Only" ordinances in Miami, huge law enforcement scandals. It was a pretty turbulent time. For those of you who weren't here during that time, it's worth your time to view the video below. For those of you who feel that Miami and South Florida are currently living through bad times never seen before, the video offers some much needed perspective.

      H/T Rubio for the video.

(Note: make sure to identify the journalists in the video. It's a who's-who of local and national personalities).

    • Are Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez Brothers?

Normally MSNBC does a pretty good job of not acting like FOX News and mixing up extremely important details, like improperly placing a (D) or an (R) after a politician's name, but today, during MSNBC's Morning Joe program with Joe Scarborough I caught something quite odd.

During an interview with former GOP Presidential Candidate, Ron Paul, the crawl at the bottom of the screen implied that former Cuban President Fidel Castro and current Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez are brothers.

The exact quote from the crawl: THE 81 YEAR OLD FORMER CUBAN PRESIDENT LOOKS VIGOROUS AND ANIMATED AS HE CHATTED MONDAY WITH HIS BROTHER, PRESIDENT HUGO CHAVEZ, AND WITH VENEZUELAN PRES. HUGO CHAVEZ.

Someone probably meant to say "...Monday with his brother, President Raul Castro, and with Venezuelan Pres. Hugo Chavez" but they screwed it up. Like I said, this is a rare slip up for MSNBC, but they gotta get it together and catch things like that. Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro and NOT brothers.

Here's the video, the quote begins to crawl across the bottom about 1:05 into it, check that out. As an added bonus, it's a moderately interesting interview with Ron Paul:

    • Castro foe's family awarded $253m

A Miami jury has awarded nearly $253m (£126m) to the children of one of Fidel Castro's former friends, who died in a Cuban jail after turning against him.

Rafael del Pino Siero, a US citizen, fell out with Mr Castro over his political views before he led the Communist Revolution in Cuba.

Del Pino was imprisoned in 1959 after trying to help a Cuban escape to Miami, and died in his cell in 1977, aged 51.

His family accused the Cuban government of torturing and killing him.

The Cuban government chose not to be represented in the Miami court during the case.

Del Pino's family said the award, reportedly the largest such penalty to date against Cuba in a US court, was five times more than they had sought.

"I was flabbergasted," Rafael del Pino Jr said, moments after the verdict was announced. "I kept thinking why did they give us so much more?"

One juror, Thomas Crews, said the award was a political statement which would "send a message to the world that countries don't mess around with US citizens".

Correspondents say, however, that it is unlikely the children will get much - if any - of the money because Cuban state assets frozen in New York are dwindling.

Their father's death also happened five years before the US state department designated Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism.

    • Cuba Lets Cubans Stay in Cuban Hotels!

Raul, Cuba's new radical reformer, has just unveiled his newest revolution: You can stay in a nice hotel if you want to!

Cuban nationals are understandably thrilled for the newly won opportunity to stay at their own resorts. Up until now, only foreigners were allowed to stay in the fancy vacation spots on their shores. Now, every Cuban man, woman, and child will be allowed to stay in those ritzy hotels they've always wanted to, but still can't afford.

At the going hotel rates, an average worker would have to save up about nine months pay (at $17 a month) to stay one night at one of the five-star luxury hotels now available to them.

Perhaps they could call to make reservations with their newly won cell phones! But oh, wait. No, at $120 a month, they can't afford that either...

    • Cuba signs up for human rights

The communist government of Cuba has signed two human rights accords that were first ratified by the UN more than 40 years ago. Castro spent much of his presidency refusing to sign the treaties, saying that to do so would be "to cede pressure from the US." But just days after power was handed over to his younger brother Raul, Cuba has signed on to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, reportedly without any foreign pressure playing a part.

"The treaty requires countries to ensure the right to work, to fair wages, to form trade unions and allow all people to join the union of their choice, to social security, to education and the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health."

Some are calling this the first step in the right direction for the new government of Cuba. Do you agree?

    • Castro's communism continues calmly

Fidel Castro has reportedly accepted the role of Cuban communism's ideologue and elder statesman after formally ceasing his reign of power earlier this week.

Despite his ailing health, Castro has vowed to stay an active part of Cuban politics, acting as the first secretary of the ruling Communist Party, which will allow him to keep writing articles on domestic and world affairs.

The party's national newspaper, Granma has reportedly said that they "will continue waiting for the 'Reflections of comrade Fidel', which will be a powerful arsenal of ideas and guidance."

Reuters claims that for 'decades' Castro's enemies have hoped that his resignation would spark people's dislike for the imposed communism and that people would hit the streets to "demand democratic reforms." It seems Castro's haters may have to wait a bit longer if they want to see a Cuban uprising.

What does the future really hold for Cuba I wonder, are Cuban's too used to conforming to think about reforming?

With the city's ban on Halloween celebration in the area this year, will people cooperate with the law or be more outrageous than ever? • Always More to See in The Castro

I've been wondering for awhile... how is it that the Castro is the only neighborhood I've been to in the United States where it seems to be all right to have pornographic images pasted in storefront windows? Even when I lived in NYC, I remember a controversy about an adult toys store that was coming to my neighborhood. The only thing that a store like that is prohibited to do is show inappropriate images, etc. in the window (so that kids walking by aren't indecently exposed), which is why those places normally have tinted, colored, or covered windows. Does anyone know anything about this? If a four year-old kid walks past Castro, down 18th street, they're in for more than a friendly stroll...
