Guess What?! There's Lead on Toys From China!
It's been a couple weeks at least since the last recall from China, so we were totally due for another. Same as the last time - lead or lead paint on toys from China above acceptable levels. Who is even still buying toys these days?? I don't have kids, but with the number of recalls, I can promise you, if I did, the only toys they'd be getting these days are books! Oops, Our Bad!
Mattel is making history, folks! For the first time in recalls-from-China history, the company that issued the recall of goods manufactured in China has now admitted that there was a design flaw in the recalled toys that was their own fault, not that of their Chinese manufacturers. Mattel Recall of Chinese Toys Will Cost $30 Million
Mattel Inc., the world's largest toymaker, said a recall of 1.5 million Chinese-made products will reduce second-quarter operating income by almost 50 percent and that it will review the production methods of all its contractors in China.The recall of toys, including Sesame Street dolls, that may contain excessive lead levels will cut $30 million from Mattel's previously reported operating income of $63.5 million. China Says U.S. Soybeans Are Tainted
Ok, so maybe there really was something wrong with the soybeans from the U.S. But a few things come to mind for me. First of all, China is in the middle of a pretty bad drought, and with lower than normal crops, it seems that the world's biggest importers of soybeans probably shouldn't be knocking what's coming in to them, since standard procedure would be to burn any sub-par stuff...which they can't afford to do right now with this drought! Second, when in the same sentence they say "U.S. soybeans are contaminated Mattel is responsible for the lead paint", two, clearly unrelated topics, doesn't it make you wonder if they're just trying to point the finger at someone, anyone, else? To me, that read: let's find a way to get attention off of us and on to something else! And third, lo and behold, the next line is "China has gone on the defensive" so I'm not the only one who got that impression. But remember what your Mom taught you - two wrongs don't make a right, or in this case, one f-up by the U.S. doesn't make the toothpaste, and the dog food, and the toys from China acceptable. Another massive Mattel toy recall
You guessed it - lead paint from China was again the cause. I'm starting to think I may need to be one of those weirdo hippie moms (whenever I become a mom), to save my kid from Chinese lead, and to save myself from having to worry what's on the toy my kid sticks in his mouth! The new 2007 Brilliance BS6 (made in China under the name of Zhonghua) - The test was performed at 40 mph (64 km/h) into a deformable object simulating another car.The head of the driver is supposed to be stopped by the airbag - and not the dashboard.To open the driver's door afterwards, the test crew had to use a crowbar, a tool that first hand witnesses don't have. It is essential that the door can be opened with little force to aid the passengers.
