Mayor 'just curious' if Obama is antichrist
"FORT MILL, S.C. -- Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk says he was “just curious” when he forwarded a chain e-mail suggesting Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama is the biblical antichrist. “I was just curious if there was any validity to it,” Funderburk said in a telephone interview. “I was trying to get documentation if there was any scripture to back it up.”
Funderburk apparently sent the e-mail from his business account at Gastonia Sheet Metal where he works as a business agent.
The e-mail, which has circulated in the last six months since Obama secured the Democratic nomination, claims the biblical book of Revelation says the antichrist will be in his 40s and of Muslim ancestry.
There is no such scripture. And Obama is not a Muslim. But that hasn’t stopped the e-mail." "FORT MILL, S.C. -- Fort Mill Mayor Danny Funderburk says he was “just curious” when he forwarded a chain e-mail suggesting Democ... more -

Vernon Baker Hailed: African-American World War II Hero
On September 11th, 2008, the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, Wofford College, a small liberal arts college in South Carolina that had been segregated up until 1963, paid honor to Vernon Baker. Baker is the only living African-American to have been awarded the World War II Medal of Honor.
For his acts of valor during WWII, Baker had earned the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, The Distinguished Service Cross and The Medal of Honor. However, it took 52 years before those heroics were recognized. Baker, because he was an African-American, was not honored for his bravery until 1997, when he and six of his comrades were finally awarded the Medal of Honor from then-President Bill Clinton at a White House ceremony. Baker was the only member of the group of honorees who was still alive.
Wofford College President Bernie Dunlap presented Vernon Baker with the college's third annual Sandor Teszler Award for Moral Courage and Service to Humankind to a thunderous standing ovation during Wofford's 2008 Opening Convocation Ceremony. Dunlap and Wofford College Dean David Wood also presented Baker, who is now 89-years-old, with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree and Spartanburg's Mayor William Barnet followed by giving Baker a key to the city.

Monkey island found... in South Carolina!
Once thought to be an urban legend, thousands of monkeys live on their own on a swampy island in the South Carolina low country, reported Charlotte, N.C., NBC affiliate WCNC-TV.
The 3,500 Rhesus monkeys on the island are federally protected. WCNC did not disclose the island's exact location to protect its inhabitants. WCNC reported the first batch were placed there in 1979.
"A lot of people don't believe it," said Vince Loper, whose family has owned a home directly across from "Monkey Island" for decades.
Loper himself had thought it was an urban legend until he finally spotted the monkeys.
On a recent trip to the island with Loper and his son, Devin, it took several hours for the monkeys to slowly come out of the trees and toward the boat.
They were left on the island to live and now produce nearly 750 newborns a year.
Every monkey is tagged or tattooed, and each year, 500 monkeys are taken to labs.
Over the decades, they've been used to test vaccines for everything from AIDS to bio-terrorism agents.
Few people, even those who live nearby, have ever seen the animals. And most don't believe it is possible Once thought to be an urban legend, thousands of monkeys live on their own on a swampy island in the South Carolina low country, repor... more -
Charges dropped in hog and dog fight case
The attorney general’s office has dropped charges against two people accused of participating in hog and dog fights in Chester County.
Chester County’s former animal control director, Vicky Land, and Arthur Parker Jr. were indicted in 2005 on charges involving fights between hogs and dogs.
Attorney general spokesman Mark Plowden told The Herald of Rock Hill the charges were dropped because hog and dog fighting was not clearly defined as a crime under laws in place at the time. The law now specifically makes it illegal. The attorney general’s office has dropped charges against two people accused of participating in hog and dog fights in Chester County.... more -
Vernon Baker: Only Living African-American Awarded WWII Medal of Honor
Wofford College, a small classical private (and once highly segregated) Southern college, will confer upon Vernon Baker an honorary doctorate degree in September. Baker and six of his soldier comrades waited 52 years to receive their Medals of Honor that they deserved, but which had been denied after World II because they were African-Americans. By the time they were finally awarded, Mr. Baker was the only one who was still living to accept the Medal of Honor in person.
This very detailed, complex article includes photographs and two gripping videos (with a documentary about Vernon Baker).
I honestly am not concerned about "blogdom popularity" with regard to this piece. But I hope that some of you will care about reading it. On the one hand it's a very complicated article, but at the same time it's also just so deeply touching and heart-wrenching. The multi-faceted thoughts that are evoked by this narrative pierces ever so many of the issues that are tearing many of us apart today: racism, the escalating ravages of wars, the indifference of morally corrupt governmental bureaucracies and more. Wofford College, a small classical private (and once highly segregated) Southern college, will confer upon Vernon Baker an honorary do... more -

The New York comedy group, Rash Behaviour, is invited to perform at the Charleston, S.C. Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival. Father tries to beat the 'gayness' out of own son with baseball bat
"An Anderson, South Carolina man is being investigated for assault and potential hate crime charges after beating his son on two separate occasions following a pride parade on Sunday. Yes, this is in the same state that just ran out on its credit to an advertising agency after running thousands of “South Carolina is so gay” ads, leaving a pride group in the state to volunteer to pick up the check.
The 49-year-old man greeted his son in the street after the boy had returned from the Anderson pride parade, already in a fit of rage. He commenced striking his own son with a baseball bat while cursing, praying, and “casting the demon of homosexuality” out of his 18-year old." South Carolina - not 'so gay' after all
An advertising campaign launched on the London Underground during gay pride week earlier this month has caused a political storm in South Carolina.
Posters, displayed at Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations in the two-week period surrounding the festival, were designed to promote a gay tour operator and to increase tourism to various US destinations noted for being gay-friendly.
News of the campaign and a poster with the tagline "South Carolina is so gay" reached the state late last week where it was condemned by Senator David Thomas. The state employee who approved the campaign has since resigned and Senator Thomas is calling for an audit of the tourism department's advertising budget, which this year runs in excess of $10m. The tourism department has also refused to pay the $5,000 fee for appearing in the campaign and has asked that the advertising be removed.
"South Carolinians will be irate when they learn their hard earned tax dollars are being spent to advertise our state as 'so gay,'" said Senator Thomas.
However, Ian Johnson, chief executive officer of Out Now, the gay marketing agency that created the campaign, claimed that the South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department (SCPRT), "chased us to be included in the campaign late on. We had to buy extra panels at Covent Garden to include South Carolina. In addition, SCPRT flew Andrew Roberts, the CEO of Amro, out to South Carolina so that he could check that there were sufficient gay-friendly aspects to the destination before including it in the campaign. Places like Charleston and Myrtle Beach have quite strong gay and lesbian communities."
Armo Worldwide said they took the idea for the campaign to "several US tourism boards" late last year and "received a very positive response". They say the individual boards paid a cut-price fee to be featured, while they covered all other costs in a cooperative-style marketing campaign.
Other US destinations featured in Amro Worldwide's campaign - including Washington DC, Las Vegas, Boston and Atlanta – have not reported any such backlash. The Boston poster, which picked up on its status as capital of the first US state to legalise same-sex marriage, is thought to be expecting a huge gay-tourism boost if a ruling goes ahead to allow out-of-state gay marriages there as well.
Amro claim the adverts are enhancing the positive associations with the word "gay". "The expression 'That is so gay" [is often used] as a form of put down, not of gay and lesbian people directly, but rather as a general way to suggest that for something to be "gay" is negative or bad … This campaign will 'reclaim' the term 'so gay'," says their website.
South Carolinians, however, remain unconvinced. "We're so gay?" asked one baffled resident when the story was put to him by a local television journalist. "Nah, wrong state. Go to California." S. Carolina to make "I Believe" license plates, endorsing religion
South Carolina legislators have recently made into law that some license plates will feature the slogan, "I Believe" and a picture of a stained glass window behind a yellow Cross.
The state has been sued by Americans United for the Separation of Church and State because AU believes that the plate is a state endorsement of religion, violating the First Amendment's establishment clause, which was determined to apply not only to the federal government but also to state governments by the Incorporation Doctrine.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."
The Reverend Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United, recently went on Bill O'Reilly to debate the matter with the guest host, Laura Ingraham. She treated him with complete disrespect and showed just how low of journalistic standards Bill O'Reilly's show really has.
What do you think? South Carolina legislators have recently made into law that some license plates will feature the slogan, "I Believe" and a p... more -
