Damon Albarn to release opera album
We already knew that Albarn was working on something big http://current.com/items/88924696_130_musicians_on_damo..., but that his project would materialize in the shape of an album, an opera show and an Olympic mascot for the BBC (?) was not so predictable.
"Damon Albarn's score for the opera "Monkey: Journey to the West" was recorded in London and Beijing with a host of European and Chinese musicians.
The production, which is based on an idea by Jean-Luc Choplin from the original 16th century novel by Wu Cheng'en, premiered last summer in Manchester, England, and will be staged today (July 23) in London.
Visuals were handled by Albarn's collaborator in Gorillaz, Jamie Hewlett.
Music, artwork and animations are also being used by the BBC as part of their Beijing Olympics coverage."

Absinthe is back!
"For 95 years, Americans wanting a taste of absinthe had to sneak it in from Europe or Mexico – and risk getting the high-proof herbal liquor confiscated by U.S. Customs.
In May 2007, government officials lifted the ban on the drink once blamed for causing hallucinations and psychosis. A year later, Virginia’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board approved one brand for sale in the state."
It is now available for at select ABC stores for $59.95.
So what is absinthe, anyway?
[Source: Wikipedia]
"Absinthe is a distilled, highly alcoholic (45%-75% ABV), anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs, including the flowers and leaves of the herb Artemisia absinthium, also called "wormwood". Absinthe is typically of a natural green color but is also produced in both clear and artificially colored styles. It is often called "the Green Fairy".
Although it is sometimes mistakenly called a liqueur, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar and is therefore classified as a liquor.[1] Absinthe is unusual among spirits in that it is bottled at a high proof but is normally diluted with water when it is drunk." Flying Lotus' new album "Los Angeles" out today
Flying Lotus, a virtuoso producer/programmer hailing from LA, drops his much anticipated debut LP on Warp today. This album is sonically ambitious, challenging and impressive. This is what modern music sounds like; at once mechanical and human, full of dense textures and mangled futuristic beats deftly mixed with old school synth lines and a hip hop sensibility. With this album and his incendiary live performances, Flying Lotus has made an impressive argument for his lasting presence in the lexicon of modern electronica. Bottom line: this shit is on fire. Check it out. Flying Lotus, a virtuoso producer/programmer hailing from LA, drops his much anticipated debut LP on Warp today. This album is sonica... more

Album Review, "Culturcide, Gigs for an Imaginary Audience"
Back in the early and middle '80s, Culturcide bypassed then-prevalent synth-pop in favor of a form of electronic punk rock that evolved into industrial. This odds-and-sods collection offers 12 demos, live jams and unreleased tracks for the coroner's inquest. It's certainly a horrible place for dilettantes to start, as the raw quality of the recordings — a third of the tracks are rehearsal takes — presents you with something like Culturcide at 151 proof, a glimpse into the hostile recesses of the band's creative process. "Slumber Party" new single from Southern Backtones
Slumber Party, the first single from Southern Backtones as yet untilted 4th album hints at the band's evolution into one of the leading psychedelic indie rock bands in the country. It is dark, anthemic, dirty, taboo, and a lot of fun.

New Beck LP: 10 tracks, 30 minutes, due this summer
"No title, release date, tracklist, or cover art just yet, but that Danger Mouse-produced, Cat Power-assisted Beck LP will indeed be coming at us a whole lot sooner than we thought a week ago. Clocking in at just over a half an hour, the ten track LP is due "this summer" from Interscope in the U.S. [...]
The result [of Beck and Danger Mouse's collaboration] is a tightly assembled group of songs that range in lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off-the-cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. [...] Musically, the album's ten tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and pop classicism, while consistently manifesting Beck and Danger Mouse's shared interest in psych-rock, folk, electronic minimalism, and orchestration.
So it's a Beck album, then."
Update: The LP will be published in the UK by XL Recordings. "No title, release date, tracklist, or cover art just yet, but that Danger Mouse-produced, Cat Power-assisted Beck LP will indeed be c... more -
130 musicians on Damon Albarn's new album.
The former Blur/Gorillaz/The Good, The Bad & The Queen frontman will release a new album in July.
Albarn told BBC 6Music: "This one's [the new album] got about 80, 90 musicians on it – something in that region. It's got a 100-piece Chinese choir on one of the tunes. That plus the orchestra probably goes to about 120, 130 people." The former Blur/Gorillaz/The Good, The Bad & The Queen frontman will release a new album in July. ... more -

The Raconteurs "Consolers of the Lonely" is a fantastic CD. Fourteen solid tracks, a rare find in the sea of mediocrity of new CD releases. Thank you to The Raconteurs for this incredible release.
