Bristol teenager facing terrorism charges
A 19-year-old Bristol man has been charged with terrorist offences relating to explosive substances.
Andrew Ibrahim, of Westbury-on-Trym, was arrested on 17 April. Three controlled explosions were later carried out at his flat.
He has been charged with possession of an explosive substance, the intention to commit terrorism and the possession of articles for terrorist purposes.
The student is a son of an NHS consultant and was educated at some of Bristol's top independent schools.
Speaking ahead of his appearance in the London court, Mr Ibrahim's family spoke of their "shock" at the charges.
According to police, the teenager has been accused of possessing Hexamethalyene Triperoxide Diamine, also known as HMTD, which is an explosive organic chemical compound.
He has also been accused of possessing, among other items, two home-made vests, a quantity of ball bearings, a quantity of air gun pellets, a quantity of nails and screws, wired circuitry, batteries and electric bulb filaments.

Second controlled explosion in Bristol
Bomb disposal experts are set to carry out a second controlled explosion at a house in Bristol after police discovered more "suspect" materials. Sandbags have been brought in to minimise the impact of the second blast. Around 30 people from Comb Paddock, where Andrew Ibrahim lived alone, have been moved from their homes.
The teenager, who was understood to have recently converted to Islam, was arrested after covert inquiries prompted by an intelligence tip-off. How can we prevent young Britons from converting to fundamentalist Islam?
Officers from the Explosives Ordnance Disposal team returned to the quiet cul-de-sac in Westbury-on-Trym on Friday night after detectives were granted seven days to hold a 19-year-old terror suspect. Is this a long enough time? Police and the government are pushing for sanctions to allow them increased detention time for terror suspects, but rights campaigners have argued that it would be an infringement of liberty.

Man held under terror laws following controlled explosion in Bristol
It is being reported that police have carried out a controlled explosion at a house in Bristol following the arrest of a 19-year-old man under suspicion of terrorism offences.
Avon and Somerset Police said they evacuated 30 people from 14 homes in the suburb of Westbury-on-Trym before bomb disposal officers carried out the explosion at 2 a.m.
