Atlantic salmon returning to East Coast rivers
July 23, 2008
CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland—The Atlantic Salmon Federation says rivers in eastern Canada have had some of the best wild Atlantic salmon returns in years.
With good water conditions and strong salmon runs throughout much of Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Maine, the group is reporting anglers and conservationists rejoicing from Labrador to Maine and all points in between.
Don Ivany, the regional director for Newfoundland and Labrador, says the returns of salmon are "a pleasant surprise," after the poor runs of 2007.
He says counting facilities indicate much better runs than previous averages dating back to 1984.
One of the more dramatic examples is the Exploits River in central Newfoundland at Bishops Falls.
To July 20, the river had a total return of 26,986 grilse and large salmon compared to an average of 15,770 in the period 1992 to 2007 and an average of 5,309 in the period 1984 to 1991.
The smaller salmon, grilse, that have spent only one year in the ocean are making the big difference. It is especially true in Newfoundland rivers where grilse make up most of the runs.
Since counting facilities are on only a portion of the hundreds of salmon rivers throughout eastern Canada and the New England states, the federation is cautious about declaring this a successful year.

I have had the profound experience of watching our Presumpscot River at the end of our street trnsform from a dead and poisonous sewer to a vibrant and healthy rapids with American Eagles and Osprey during the past years. They removed the damns because of economic reasons finally. I think we should apologize to the Natives who lived here and if i remember correctly walked to talk to our leaders in Boston to complain and got no respect.

But this is good news for the good guys!

• Virus Alert! Attack Code Released for New DNS Attack

Hackers have released software that exploits a recently disclosed flaw in the Domain Name System (DNS) software used to route messages between computers on the Internet.

The attack code was released Wednesday by developers of the Metasploit hacking toolkit.

Internet security experts warn that this code may give criminals a way to launch virtually undetectable phishing attacks against Internet users whose service providers have not installed the latest DNS server patches.

Attackers could also use the code to silently redirect users to fake software update servers in order to install malicious software on their computers, said Zulfikar Ramizan, a technical director with security vendor Symantec. "What makes this whole thing really scary is that from an end-user perspective they may not notice anything," he said.

Check out the article and be ready and aware..do not download anything from a site, even a trusted one right now, before doing a google. The article says this threat is very serious and can affect the entire world.

• Book: Blessed Unrest: How the largest movement in the world came into being and no...

Many books describe the world in ways that break our hearts. Blessed Unrest invokes a heartbreak from which light pours. Paul Hawken is stupendously well informed. He is also critical without rancor, intuitive without woo woo, and poetic or hard-minded as the case requires. His narrative flows from a harrowing litany of "free market" abuses and desecrations to the countless life-saving actions and organizations that now envelope the earth in response. This is a work of enormous love and consequence. Every compassion-driven soul who reads it will be stunned by the scope and power of the movement we've inadvertently formed. When, inevitably, my daughters someday feels their hearts broken by the wounded world they have inherited, I will be handing them this and a precious few other books.

Just got this book on cd and it looks relevant to our situation..
Perfect to lift me out of my frustration and sadness of our current political stagnation. and listen to while I am packing our family's belongings to start our new life in our new home nearby.

• Climate protestor Super Glues self to UK Prime Minister

Downing Street today denied claims that UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown is currently super-glued to a climate action campaigner.

Dan Glass, says the anti Heathrow expansion group Plane Stupid, infiltrated the State Dining Room of 10 Downing Street on Tuesday evening, then under cover of haranguing him about the third runway at Heathrow, "put his super-glue covered hand onto Brown’s polyester suit."

Downing Street has yet to deny the polyester suit, but according to the BBC is claiming that there was "no stickiness of any significance."

As, we believe, is generally the case with Superglue after a few seconds' contact. The Plane Stupid version of events is however more imaginatively entertaining.

"Dan is now reading messages to the PM from people whose villages will be bulldozed if Brown agrees to BAA’s expansion plans. He’s also reading out testimony from communities across the world threatened by climate change while Downing Street aides attempt to extract the Labour leader from the green campaigner... [aargh...] Dan is hoping to stay glued to the PM long enough to begin quoting from confidential documents secured through the Freedom of Information Act, which reveal the government’s public consultation on Heathrow expansion was fixed. The papers reveal Ministers have engaged in an extraordinary level of collusion with airport operator, BAA, fiddling pollution figures and developing a joint strategy to beat opposition groups."

This is a great idea to get ones attention lol.....its probably a good thing this protester didn't grab the PM's crouch

• Our Challenge. Al Gore needs our help.

Wes and Joan have told me that MoveOn members are really jumping on board with our new national challenge—getting 100% of our nation's electricity from renewable and truly clean energy sources within 10 years. Apparently, more than 150,000 have already signed this MoveOn petition in the last 24 hours.

Thank you! I knew when I issued this challenge that it would take millions of us working together, a whole new movement of citizens, to make it happen. And, once again, MoveOn members are rising to the challenge. It's very heartening.

I'd like to ask you to join me by adding your name, too. Just click here:

As I said on Thursday, this is a generational moment. A moment when we decide our own path and our collective fate. I'm asking you—each of you—to join me and build this future.

Thanks for all you do,

• Gore: can do more for environment as private citizen, but lobbyists block policy m...

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said he can do more to fight global warming as a private citizen than he could working as a government official even if Barack Obama wins the presidency.

``My own best role is to try to bring about a sea change in public opinion,'' Gore said today on NBC's ``Meet the Press.'' ``Policy makers who know the right thing to do run up against a wall set up all around them by the lobbyists and the special interests,'' he said.

This is what's destroying democracy and putting roadblocks into World Peace as well, it's the fact that lobbyists can change what the popular vote/majority really want and really think what is good for them, the nation and the world.

Lets take a look at some actual scenarios:

Food industry lobbyists are crawling about the Executive Office of Management & Budget to stop approval of new regulations that would give consumers the right to know which retail outlets were supplied tainted meat that’s subject to recall. http://www.madcowblog.com/2008/04/articles/mad-cow-upda...

Why are they "blocking" consumers the "right to know" law? Well, of course its about the money..they would lose business for their alleged breaking of laws to get food to the public and it would cost a ton to get back their good standing. So, bring in the Lobbyist. They hound the lawmakers, steeling their rare and precious time and furthermore, they spend big bucks on these lawmakers (remember Abrahamhoff?) one way or another and can go to jail doing it, but that doesn't stop them, they have lots of bucks backing them! They can even get an outta jail card real easy..check Abrahamoff's partner recently getting his sentence cut in half!!! What bank thief is going to get that?!!?? http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i9Zn601MMJ052ccjowQX...

All the above are real examples of what a lobbyist does. Now take the Jewish Lobby...why is America backing Israel despite their breaking International laws AND committing war crimes http://www.boston.com/news/world/middleeast/articles/20...
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1557613/Israe... many others..

The Jewish lobby, or AIPAC http://www.aipac.org/) lobbys Americas lawmakers and shapes policy toward Israel every day. To see what influence they have check out this site: http://www.stopaipac.org/ (AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, describes itself as the most important organization affecting the U.S. relationship with Israel. With a budget of $65 million, and membership now standing at over 100,000, it is no wonder that congressional staffers consider it one of the most powerful and effective lobbies on Capitol Hill.)

So, lobbyists are the evil do-ers in our society. Just out for themselves and not in the public interest. So why do we have them still? Greed, money, power.

Better laws are needed to keep these thieves at home watching tv or playing some video games. Better yet, in prison where they belong.

What are we waiting for?

• British pm Demands end to Israel settlements >It's about Time<

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Sunday demanded that Israel cease settlement construction and promised more money to jump-start the battered Palestinian economy.
Gordon Brown, left, shakes hands with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
>It's about time<
In his first trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories as Britain's leader, Brown repeatedly stressed that economics are key to Mideast peace, and said Israel should ease travel restrictions in the West Bank that have hindered commerce.
>especially medical supplies to innocent people<
But his strongest comments were reserved for the settlements: "I think the whole European Union is very clear on this matter: We want to see a freeze on settlements."
>No Sh*t Sherlock...its illegal to begin with<
"Settlement expansion has made peace harder to achieve. It erodes trust, it heightens Palestinian suffering, it makes the compromises Israel needs to make for peace more difficult," Brown said at a news conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
>DITTO<
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said he would reserve comment on Brown's remarks until the British leader meets with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem later Sunday.
>guess he can't believe a western leader has finally spoke up for the Palestinians<
Abbas went further in his criticism of Israel's construction in disputed east Jerusalem and the adjacent West Bank, telling Brown that Israel lacks commitment to the "principles and spirit" of Mideast peace efforts. He singled out stepped-up construction of homes for Jews in areas of Jerusalem the Palestinians claim for their capital.
>The Israeli government sees an and to their candy store of steeling land from innocent, unarmed people, so their grabbing as much as they can<

to read the article in its entirety and without >my opinion<, just click the link above...but,
Brown is right as is Abbas...Israel needs to stop the illegal steeling of land while hurting innocent people

• Boy, 12, pleads with his mother to get off rail tracks seconds before she is kille...

A boy of 12 began a desperate race to save his mother after finding a suicide note at their home.

Veronica Bell's son Jordan sped on his bike to the nearby train station, where he found her jumping down from the platform on to the track.

He pleaded with 41-year-old Mrs Bell not to kill herself for the sake of his two little sisters, whom she had just dropped at school.

The youngster's emotional appeal seemed to have worked and the mother of seven got out of the way of one train.

But as she tried to climb back up to safety, Jordan saw a second one hit her.

The driver of the trans-Pennine express put on the emergency brakes and sounded a warning after spotting her on the track 100 yards ahead, but could not stop in time.

Mrs Bell was said to be depressed after being arrested for an alleged assault on a 20-year-old man during a party at her home earlier this month.

An inquest will be held but relatives believe she was trying to get off the track when she died.

British Transport Police have launched an investigation into the tragedy which happened at 10.30am on Thursday at Manchester's Belle Vue Station.

Jordan's older brother Chris Clark, 19, said the youngster followed her to the station a few hundred yards away from their home in Gorton after becoming concerned by the note which ended with the words 'I'm going soon.'

Veronica Bell was hit by a train at Manchester's Belle Vue Station

He said: 'He knew something was wrong and had followed her. Jordan was talking to her, telling her to think of his sisters. She told him she was scared.

'From what he has told me, one train came by but she got out of the way. She just couldn't do it.

'He was talking to her and she seemed she was going to get back on the platform. She had put her bag back up. Then another train came and she looked round - and screamed.'

Mr Clark said his brother was traumatised. 'He was a mummy's boy, really protective of his mum, and followed her everywhere. He is devastated.'

Mrs Bell had been arrested over an assault at the family home on July 6. She was celebrating her 41st birthday with family members when a fracas broke out involving a knife. A man was treated for stab wounds which were not life threatening.

Mr Clark said his mother had never been arrested before and feared her younger children - aged between nine and 15 - would be taken away from her.

'She was always a happy mum who lived for her children,' said Mr Clark. 'After she was arrested she just wasn't herself. She may be gone but she will never be forgotten.'

"The wrong woman was given a chemical abortion tablet after a nurse mixed up two patients with the same first name, a misconduct hearing has heard. Ann Downer gave the drug to the woman who had only gone into her clinic for an initial consultation. She had not decided to have a termination when the nurse gave her the drug.

When staff realised what had happened the distraught woman was called back to the clinic in pain and doctors subsequently advised her to undergo a surgical abortion. Miss Downer, 44, should have administered the drug to a second patient who was in the later stages of a chemical termination, the Nursing and Midwifery Council was told.

The first woman attended the Calthorpe Clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham - which offers abortion, sterilisation and vasectomy - in October, 2006.

Another patient with the same name was due to have the drugs for the second stage of her medical abortion, only undertaken on women who have been pregnant for less than nine weeks.

The clinic's usual practice was to only call out first names of patients to protect their confidentiality while in the waiting room.

Once the patient was in a private room, other details, like their full name, date of birth and address, were checked to make sure they were the person the nurse was expecting."

• Fortune 500 CEOs relative to the average wage in the United States

n recent years, there has been a lot of criticism concerning the salaries of Fortune 500 CEOs. The graph below from The Economist shows how much CEO compensation has grown relative to the average wage in the United States.

As you can see, the compensation for executives in major US corporations was around 30-40 times the wages of the average worker up until the late 1980s. Now, executives make over 100 times the average wage. You could also look at the largest compensation packages for US CEOs on this Forbes site, noting that the highest paid CEOs make a couple hundred million dollars for the year (this of course includes bonuses and stock compensation).

Some are particularly aghast at what CEOs make when their performance is poor. For example -

The Corporate Library, an American corporate-governance consultancy, last year identified 11 large and well known but poorly governed companies, including AT&T, Merck and Time Warner, where the chief executive had been paid at least $15m a year for two successive years even as the company's shares had underperformed. Robert Nardelli received a $210m pay-off when he lost his job earlier this month even though the shares of his company, Home Depot, fell slightly during his six years in charge. Carly Fiorina, ejected from Hewlett-Packard almost $180m better off—including a severance payment of $21.6m—after a lacklustre tenure as chief executive.

What do you think about the increase in executive pay? Is it an outrage or is it fair? Should there be restrictions on how much a CEO can be paid? You may want to remember our discussion of labor markets and how marginal revenue product was the basis for how much someone should be paid.

Makes me feel crazy! Angry, moody, even homocidal & defiant. Did I mention very angry. Anxious, sensitive to others. Emotional. I hate it!! Actually works on my allergies. Kills my people skills. Decided the side effects are not worth my sanity.

PATIENT RATING #2
15 yr. old son took it for allergies. Has asthma also. Took it last evening, about 24 hrs ago. Check him at 11:pm and he was very sweaty, hard to get him off the sofa to bed. Slept in very late this am, woke up very moody. Turn into a confrontation later in afternoon. Ended up with swearing and hitting me with an object. Then I looked up what others said, and think these symptoms were drug related as they were the most severe I've ever seen him. Wouldn't recommend this for anyone.

PATIENT RATING #3
I warn anyone from taking this drug. it gave me major panic attacks and i've never had any before. it makes you nervous and feel like you out of it. dizzyness, anxiety, and depression. this drug made me feel like i wanted to die and stay in bed away from people. It should be taken off the shelf!

PATIENT RATING #4

I thought I was going to kill (not literally) my boyfriend today and after reading everyone else's comments about how it made them anxious and irritated I am relieved to know that I'm not the only one going crazy! These side effects would probably go away if I took it regulary but it's not worth finding out. I'll find something else!

Let's impeach the President for lying
And misleading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door
Who's the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
They bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war
Let's impeach the President for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones
What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government's protection
