Monomyth - Joseph Campbell
The Monomyth (often referred to as "the hero's journey") is a description of a basic pattern found in many narratives from around the world. This universal pattern was described by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). A noted scholar of novelist James Joyce, Campbell borrowed the term monomyth from Joyce's Finnegans Wake.
Campbell's insight was that important myths from around the world which have survived for thousands of years, all share a fundamental structure.
In a well-known quote from the introduction to The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell wrote:
? A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.?
The monomyth has influenced a number of artists, musicians, poets, and filmmakers, including Bob Dylan and George Lucas. Mickey Hart, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead had long noted Campbell's influence and agreed to participate in a seminar with him in 1986 entitled From Ritual to Rapture.
Campbell's work has been consciously applied by a wide variety of modern writers and artists, for example, in creating screenplays for movies. The best known is perhaps George Lucas, who has acknowledged a debt to Campbell regarding both the original Star Wars trilogy and its prequels.

Birthday wishes pour in for Mandela
Messages of congratulations, tributes and good wishes are pouring in from home and abroad, from ordinary people and influential leaders alike for former South African president Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday.
President Thabo Mbeki extended his message on behalf of the entire nation to the internationally revered statesman and former political prisoner on Friday.
"We are proud as South Africans that Mr Mandela and his generation of fighters embraced with both passion and reason the mission that history imposed on them and more than met the demands that it enjoined them to fulfil," he said in Pretoria on Friday.
Mbeki said South Africans glowed in the light of fame because the country stood on the shoulders of icons such as Mandela.
Harmony and equality
He recalled Mandela's statement at the opening of the defence case in the Rivonia Trial in the Pretoria Supreme Court on 20 April 1964: "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities," Mandela said back then.
"It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
Mbeki urged the current generation to return to the question of their mission and how to fulfil it, as conditions and circumstances evolved, much in the same way that Mandela's generation had to discover and fulfil its mission.
"Finding answers to this question simultaneously as we celebrate his birthday is perhaps the biggest present we can give to Nelson Mandela," said Mbeki. "Many happy returns - ukhule ukhokhobe!"

Retiring Crossing Guard Gets Gurney Ride, Instead of Gold Watch
CLEVELAND -- A crossing guard working for a Catholic school on Cleveland's west side was taken to an area hospital Tuesday morning after he was hit by a truck just as he pushed a child to safety.
A Cleveland Police Department spokesperson tells Fox 8 News that the accident happened at 7:52 a.m. outside of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, located near the intersection of West 70th Street and Detroit Avenue.
Anthony Timko Sr. has been a crossing guard at the school for many years. He was transported to Lakewood Hospital, where he underwent a CT scan. His exact condition, however, is not yet known.
Timko, who was scheduled to retire on Wednesday after 11 years on the job, was walking with a child across West 70th Street when he spotted a Chevy Silverado heading southbound.
Police say that the driver looked down to adjust the defrosters on his pickup and thus took his eyes off the road. The longtime crossing guard jumped in front of the oncoming truck while pushing the kid out of harm's way.
The 28-year-old driver of the Silverado, who has children that attend Mt. Carmel, was cited. Police continue to investigate the incident. CLEVELAND -- A crossing guard working for a Catholic school on Cleveland's west side was taken to an area hospital Tuesday morning aft... more -
Families come together after fire, fatality
This happened in the town I live in, its nice to see that some people are willing to risk their lives to help others.
Excerpt from story below.
Bob Bundy lost his wife and his home in a fire last Wednesday but was focusing yesterday on the farm he loved, trying to piece together the records of a cattle business he spent decades building.
Greg Bryant, who suffered burns to both hands and arms while pulling Bundy's wife, Joyce, from the burning home, was released yesterday from Harborview Medical Center. It was his 21st birthday.
Although they have yet to meet, the two men's lives have come together since the fire.
"It sounds like I've made some lifetime friends," Bryant said yesterday while waiting to be released from the hospital. "They've called me a bunch. I can't wait to get home to meet them. They sound like really awesome people," he said of Bundy's family and friends.
Bundy's family sent flowers to Bryant, and they asked that in lieu of flowers for Mrs. Bundy, who did not want a service when she died, donations be sent to help defray Bryant's hospital bills. Tiger swings for his fifth Masters title
Woods has won eight out of his last 10 tournaments and is an even-money favorite to capture his fifth Masters, odds never before seen in golf.
The pressure of expectation is immense but he did little to play down speculation about a calendar grand slam with his declaration that it was "easily within reason."
Woods is the only professional to hold all four majors at the same time, sweeping them in a span of 294 days from the 2000 U.S. Open to the 2001 Masters.
He showed up at Augusta last year going for his third straight major only to be denied by Zach Johnson who will start two groups ahead of him, grouped with England's Luke Donald and Australia's Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion.
Nothing seems out of reach to Woods, whose main opponent is history. He’s already got 13 major titles, with Jack Nicklaus’ 18 the only thing standing between him and being the sport’s greatest champio: A Grand Slam Woods has won eight out of his last 10 tournaments and is an even-money favorite to capture his fifth Masters, odds never before seen ... more -

101 year-old man to run London marathon
Not content with finishing a half marathon in Essex, 101 year-old Buster Martin is now focusing on London's 26-mile event.
You may think running a marathon could be too much for an 'old-timer,' not Buster, as soon as he crossed the finish line of his half-marathon he reportedly asked "Where's my beer?"
He's been a busy man in his life, he's got 17 kids and three years ago decided to start working again as he had become 'bored.'
So much for an easy life when you get old, fair play though, I'll be waiting clutching a pint for him, if and when, he crosses the finish line...
