Milan court authorises euthanasia
"A Milan appeals court on Wednesday authorised the suspension of the life support system of a young woman who has been in an irreversible coma for the past 16 years.
The ruling, which immediately sparked both applause and criticism, came amid a legislative void in Italy on issues such as living wills and related end-of-life questions.
Englaro's elderly father had been trying to have his daughter's life support system turned of since 1999 in order to free his daughter from ''the inhumane and degrading condition in which she is forced to exist''.
He argued that his daughter, who was injured in a car crash in her Lombardy hometown of Lecco in 1992 when she was 19, said plainly during her life that she would not wish to live in a vegetative state."

Black pets need love too
A promotion by the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter to boost the adoption of black-coated dogs and cats has drawn criticism for being racially insensitive.
The shelter has halted its "Black is Beautiful" Week after the president of the Austin chapter of the NAACP raised concerns in the media. They had planned to reduce adoption fees for black-coated animals to $25 for a week. The normal fee for adoption is $85.
Nelson Linder, president of the Austin NAACP, said it was a "violation" to use "Black is Beautiful" as a promotion for an animal shelter and that the shelter was right to halt the promotion. The phrase became popular during the 1960s civil rights movement as a way to promote equality and African American self-esteem.
Black-coated animals do not get adopted as quickly as other animals. Either out of superstition or fear that they might be a more aggressive dog, they tend to be underadopted.
The shelter has 12 black adult cats available for adoption out of about 25 and that about half of the shelter's dogs are black. Two of those dogs have been at the shelter for two months. The average stay for animals is about 11 days. The shelter does euthanize animals based on factors such as space and adoptability. Living jacket made up of embryonic stem cells dies
A small jacket made up of embryonic stem cells taken from mice, had to be euthanized because it was growing too quickly for it's own support system. Why grow a jacket?... Cancer victim Chantal Sebire found dead at home
The French woman who made headlines across the world due to her battle with a horrifying facial cancer has been found dead at her home today.
Chantal Sebire was left so distresingly disfigured by the rare esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) - an uncommon malignant neoplasm of the nasal vault - that she appealed for the legal right to end her own life.
Earlier this week a court in Dijon, eastern France, rejected Sebire's request to be "accompanied to her death with dignity". The French woman who made headlines across the world due to her battle with a horrifying facial cancer has been found dead at her home... more -
Euthanasia plea rejected in France
This woman has an incurable condition that has left her without the sense of smell, taste and sight. She's asked for the right to "depart peacefully" so that she no longer has to suffer. But in France, the euthanasia laws only allow families to request the life-support equipment for a terminally ill patient to be switched off. The laws do not allow a doctor to prescribe life-ending drugs. She appealed to the courts, and to the entire country of France, but has been denied. She now says she'll have to take the matter into her own hands. Do you think that euthanasia laws should be extended to cover situations like hers? Jack Kevorkian to Run For Congress
Civil rights and assisted suicide pioneer Jack Kevorkian is seeking a seat in the United States Congress. Kevorkian was released from prison last year following an 8 year and 2 1/2 month sentence for helping gravely and painfully ill people finalize their lives. The 79 year old hero to many, hopes he can bring honesty to an otherwise corrupt Washington government while ousting Republican incumbent Rep. Joe Knollenberg. Kevorkian will run as an independent.
"Kevorkian, 79, claims to have helped at least 130 people die from 1990 until 1998 -- the year he was charged in the death of Thomas Youk, a 52-year-old Oakland County man with Lou Gehrig's disease. Kevorkian has promised not to help in any other assisted suicides and could go back to prison if he did."
Little progress has been made in the euthanasia movement as it is rarely discussed in politics. Oregon is the only state that has laws to protect doctors who assist patients with painless and supervised deaths. But even those laws are too strict according to some.
As baby boomers age, there is little doubt that euthanasia will once again become a predominate issue. While medical science has advanced enough to prolong lives, it has done little to improve the quality of life as Alzheimer's and other debilitating diseases are increasing substantially.
Those in favor of death rights argue for removal of government's overbearing attitude in what is ultimately a serious personal decision; one that could be aided in a painless and professional way by doctors who care. Doctor Suicide to run for Congress
79-year-old Jack Kevorkian spent 8 years in prison for second degree murder in the 1998 assisted suicide of Thomas Youk. But now he's running for office, calling for "honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington."
Kevorkian will need to gather 3,000 signatures in order for his name to be on the ballot, and he's running in a district where the Republican incumbent only won his last election with 51.5% of the vote. Does he stand a chance? 79-year-old Jack Kevorkian spent 8 years in prison for second degree murder in the 1998 assisted suicide of Thomas Youk. But now he's... more -

Los Angeles votes to require mandatory spay/neuter for almost all dogs and cats
Every year, animal shelters in California euthanize 500,000 dogs and cats. Los Angeles city council passed a law requiring mandatory spay/neuter . This law is modelled on a California law making its way through the legislative process - the California Healthy Pets Act, which would require mandatory spay/neuter for all pets -- with some notable exceptions, such as show dogs, service dogs, police dogs, etc. But backyard breeding will no longer be allowed! The number of animal lives this bill would save if passed is tremendous. Finally, a real solution to the terrible shame of pet overpopulation and euthanasia.
AB 1634 still needs your support to make it through the California congress -- more info here:

UK willing to forgo civil liberties
The 23rd British Social Attitudes Report has been published by the National Centre for Social Research. Those living in the UK are overwhelmingly prepared to give up their freedom and privacy in order to help the so-called 'war on terrorism'. 80% of respondents agree that a terror suspect - a comfortingly remote term - should be followed, have their phones tapped, and their mail opened. Questioned on euthanasia, four out of five people said 'the law should allow a doctor to end someone's life at the person's request if they have an incurable and painful illness from which they will die'. The survey also questioned Brits on ID cards, the emergence of radical Islamic terrorism, aging society, and the internet. Man shoots his wife in hospital
A 77-year-old Italian man has been arrested after shooting dead his wife as she lay in hospital.
Police in the Tuscan city of Prato said the man shot his 82-year-old wife, who had Alzheimer's disease, three times in full view of medical staff.
The man told police he did it because he could not stand to see her suffer.
His wife had been diagnosed eight years ago with the degenerative and irreversible brain disorder, which causes dementia and eventually death.
It is estimated that 2-5% of people over 65 years of age and up to 20% of those over 85 suffer from the disease.
The man, whose name has not been released by the police, entered the hospital ward where his wife was being treated at around 1730 on Saturday, according to the Italian newspaper, La Stampa.
He then took out a pistol and shot her twice in the head and once in the chest.
Afterwards, he placed the weapon in the corner of the room and awaited the police, La Stampa reported. A 77-year-old Italian man has been arrested after shooting dead his wife as she lay in hospital. ... more -
