Mark Wallinger wins Turner Prize
Conceptual British artist Mark Wallinger has won 2007's £25,000 Turner Prize for his epic political work State Britain, a recreation of the Brian Haw's one-man Parliament Square anti-Iraq war protest destroyed by Tony Blair's government.
The installation - a 40-metre long replica - consisted of banners and tarpaulin shelters to replicate the mini-peace camp run by Haw opposite the Houses of Parliament from June 2001, until it was demolished by the police in May 2006, under new powers banning protests within one kilometre of the Palace of Westminster.
"Brian Haw is a remarkable man who has waged a tireless campaign against the folly and hubris of our government's foreign policy," Wallinger said.
"For six-and-a-half years he has remained steadfast in Parliament Square, the last dissenting voice in Britain. Bring home the troops, give us back our rights, trust the people," he added.
