Video games saving the soul of rock 'n' roll?
The wildly popular "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" games has reportedly helped today's kids get into the music that their parents loved.
"It's a cool generational thing to share that with your kids," said Metallica's Lars Ulrich. "My [son's] favorite bands are ... the same bands that are my favorite bands -- the bands I grew up on."
The success of the games has also caused a spike in sales of "real" guitars, according to the nationwide music chain, Guitar Center. The wildly popular "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" games has reportedly helped today's kids get into the music ... more -

Rock Back Update Allows Export of 55 Tracks
Here are details of what you can and can't export into Rock Band 2:
September 4, 2008 - Today, MTV Games is set to release a title update for Rock Band. This required update allows users to import 55 tracks from the original game to the upcoming Rock Band 2 (shipping September 14). The update adds an Export Disc tab under the options in the Rock Band menu. The service is not free, however. Gamers who want to export the 55 tracks will need to pay 400 MSP ($5).
An online connection is required to export the tracks. All tracks from RB1 will be exportable with the exception of the following songs:
"Paranoid" as made famous by Black Sabbath
"Run to the Hills" as made famous by Iron Maiden
"Enter Sandman" by Metallica
Harmonix didn't include information if the bonus tracks (all from Harmonix bands) would also be exportable.
Obviously, you won't be able to send these tracks to RB2 until the game is actually in your hands. Here are details of what you can and can't export into Rock Band 2: ... more -

The Sushi Cabaret Club - Rockin' It In Japan
I’m big in Japan.”
–Tom Waites
There was a time when the Land of the Rising Sun was the lodestone for the aspiring and rising musician or for those who were long past their prime. With instruments, song sheets and dreams, these hopefuls flooded a Japan seemingly eager to be entertained by these wandering minstrels. The feeling was that in those glory days of yesteryear any musician with the barest inkling of musical talent could make it big in Japan. Perhaps that was the case or perhaps it was only a myth. Nowadays, musicians both domestic and imported have to struggle for recognition and tips like everywhere else.
The Sushi Cabaret Club has struggled like many bands in Japan but they have garnered some measure of success over the years having their music featured in Internet and TV ads. They have also played at Fuji Rock, which is no small feat. The Sushi Cabaret Club is a mostly foreign rock band based in Nagoya. They have been together since 2003, though its members have been in Japan for longer than that.
The music of the Sushi Cabaret Club as described by frontman Dave Wallace and bassist Aaron Beutel is good honest rock-n-roll with honest lyrics and containing some good ballads. It is a mixture of American rock and U.K. rock with a touch of rock from the southern states of America. They are an eclectic blend of a variety of inspirations from Hendrix, AC/DC and Pink Floyd to one of the original musical rebels, Beethoven. I’m big in Japan.” –Tom Waites ... more -
Rush Plays Rock Band Backstage at The Colbert Report
So, when Rush was backstage at The Colbert Report last week, they played "Tom Sawyer" on Rock Band and now there's video of it. I kind of expected it to be a funny demonstration of how unlike playing real instruments Rock Band really is, with these three seasoned pros failing the song about 30 seconds in. But as it turns out, they did pretty well, which is either a testament to Rock Band's accuracy, Rush's gaming skillz or my inability to correctly anticipate the outcome of web videos. (Hint: I thought Dramatic Chipmunk was going to be totally undramatic.) So, when Rush was backstage at The Colbert Report last week, they played "Tom Sawyer" on Rock Band and now there's vide... more

National Guard to recruit 'Rock Stars'
In August, the US Army National Guard will launch a mobile marketing campaign, supported by outreach to local media, to sign up recruits at various music festivals and other outdoor events.
Developed and executed by RedPeg Marketing on behalf of prime contractor Docupak, the "Rock Star Hero Challenge," as the campaign is called, features a tour bus with 52-inch touch screen displays that allow potential recruits to see and participate in virtual missions.
Interactive kiosks where visitors can pose with images of rock bands will sit outside the buses, tying into the musical nature of the events and emphasizing the figurative "rock star" quality of Army National Guard members.
The 12-week tour begins the first weekend in August and will go to about four events per week, with each event expected to last eight to 12 hours and draw 50,000 to 100,000 attendees.
Despite earlier reports of problems meeting recruitment goals since the Iraq war, LTC Joseph Day, chief of the Army National Guard's strategic actions and marketing, said that the National Guard is currently on track to meet its recruiting goal for 2008. Since 2005, it has increased its "end strength" total from 330,000 to 380,000.
RedPeg will manage outreach to local media covering music festivals and sports events like NASCAR races and bass-fishing tournaments.
"Recruiters will know about the events [in advance] and pre-market them," said RedPeg president and CEO Brad Nierenberg. "The events will be a way to engage with consumers who haven't considered the National Guard before now."
Day said that recruiting is typically done on a local, grassroots level, with recruiters attending any large event where its "target demographic" might be found.
"The interactive nature makes the 'Rock Star Hero' different and will appeal to our demographic's thirst for technology," Day said. In August, the US Army National Guard will launch a mobile marketing campaign, supported by outreach to local media, to sign up recrui... more -
