Fallen Soldiers Swap
Five Lebanese militants linked to Hezbollah were set free in exchange for the bodies of two Israeli soldiers that were killed in a Hezbollah raid. Among the five militants was, Samir Kantar, who vowed to continue the fight against Israel shortly after being released. Many, especially Hezbollah supporters, are seeing this lopsided trade as a symbol of Hezbollah's power over Israel. Children traumatized by conflict
On the Gaza-Israel frontline violence is traumatising a whole generation, the Guardian reports today, and stress is taking its toll on both sides of the border.
Sleeping problems, fears, and fits of aggression are just some of the many symptoms of severe stress affecting the majority of children in Gaza and Sderot.
They live on the frontline of the world's oldest conflict, which in the past eight years has killed 5,848 people, wounded thousands more and traumatised countless families. Raziel has spent four years in therapy; Nour has been seeing counsellors for six months.
But Israeli and Palestinian researchers suspect the toll is worse than either the number of deaths or psychological symptoms of this protracted conflict suggest.
Limited research on adults and more extensive testing on animals shows that stressful events, especially life-threatening situations, can cause long-term neurological and biological damage. When stressed the brain secretes powerful hormones such as cortisone which, in big or prolonged doses, can change the brain's structure, resulting in an inability to process intense emotions or form new memories. Such hormones can also induce epileptic seizures and attention deficit and hyperactive disorders.
If psychological symptoms are any indication, Gaza and Sderot could be in the throes of an emerging epidemiological disaster.
In Sderot, 28% of adults, three times the national average, and an even higher proportion of children, suffered post traumatic stress disorder. Children aged seven to 12 suffered most, with 74% experiencing extreme fear, 67% refusing to talk or visit places that remind them of an attack, and 57% enduring nightmares and other sleep difficulties.
Ninety per cent of residents had seen or heard a rocket fly overhead, 92% had experienced a rocket falling nearby, 56% had experienced shrapnel hitting their home, and 65% knew someone who had been injured.
In Gaza, nearly 60% suffered post traumatic stress disorder, around 20% suffered anxiety and 51% were depressed.
As a result of Israeli army ground invasions and air raids the average child had experienced 13 traumatic events. Thirty-four per cent had been threatened with a gun, 30% had witnessed a close relative die and 62% had seen someone killed by a missile. Many had seen their homes demolished, suffered injuries or witnessed the kidnapping of a friend or relative.
Even when the children were not first hand witnesses they were highly exposed to violence via the media. Seventy-five per cent saw mutilated bodies on television caused by internal Palestinian fighting and Israeli army invasions.
How will these children be able to even imagine living alongside each other peacefully as they grow up and become the adults in their society, when their very existence is so stressful? Are they being groomed for even more violence? What can anyone do to improve their lives? And if both sides see serious health epidemics as a result of stress, will that be enough motivation to finally resolve the Israeli/Palestinian conflict? Blair to visit Gaza Tuesday
Mideast envoy Tony Blair will visit the Gaza Strip Tuesday, the former British prime minister's first trip to the coastal territory since the Islamic group violently seized control a year ago.
Blair is expected to meet with traders and inspect a northern Gaza waste water project being built with international funds, said Palestinian businessmen and officials familiar with his trip. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the visit has not been officially announced.
They said it was unlikely that Blair would meet with officials from Hamas, which is committed to Israel's destruction and is considered a terrorist group by the U.S., EU and Israel.
The international community does not recognize Hamas' Gaza government, and officials fear any visit could be construed as approval.
Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan said his group would make security arrangements for Blair's visit. Radwan said in a statement text-messaged to reporters that the envoy's visit would be brief.

Obama Supporter Criticizes Obama on Obama's Own Website

Obama may have just lost my vote
I had high hopes for the candidate of change, but at the end of the day it's politics as usual.
After today's vote for the FISA bill, I am seriously reconsidering my support for Barrack Obama and the democratic party altogether. There is no longer a populist party. We have one party masquerading as two. Our government has been bought and paid for by large corporations and lobbyists.
Congress' approval rating is at an all time low as is the approval of the president yet nothing changes.
I'm afraid real change will only come when the economy slips into a depression (the ball is already rolling). People are tired of this fascist two party monopoly of our government and media.
Shame on you Barrack Obama!
Shame on you for supporting the telecom industry at the expense of the 4th amendment of the constitution.
Shame on you for supporting the brutal Israeli regime.
Shame on you for your tough rhetoric regarding Iran. They have EVERY legal right to use Uranium for peaceful purposes. The US and Israel have violated UN charter by threatening them with war. We've tried to freeze their assets, which is an act of war and this country wonders why they are now test firing missiles. HELLO!
There is one country, however, in the middle east who has NO legal right to enrich uranium for ANY purposes yet they have 200 nuclear bombs and are in violation of more UN resolutions than ANY nation on earth. I'm speaking, of course, of Israel.
No "logic" being presented by the corporate media to invade Iran can do so without begging the question - Why not invade the country who is truly in violation of international agreements, the world court, UN charter and the 4th Geneva Convention.

Israeli military kills U.N. worker
The UN is demanding an investigation into how the Israeli military killed one of its Palestinian school teachers by blasting open the front door of her Gaza home with explosives in the presence of three of her children.
Wafer Shaker al Daghma, 34, a teacher at a local UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) elementary school, was killed last Wednesday as she stood preparing to open the wooden door of her home to the troops. According to UNRWA and relatives who found her body, the military used an explosive device on the door which blew most of her head from her body. They then confined the traumatised children – aged from two to 13 – for five hours while the body lay outside the door of the room where they were held.

Continued Palestinian Rocket fire Violates Truce once again
The Gaza truce was violated once again on Monday evening when two Kassam rockets fired from the northern Gaza Strip landed in an open area in the western Negev.
No casualties or damage were reported.
As a result of the latest attack, Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the army to keep the border crossings closed on Tuesday.
Monday's Kassam attack comes after a weekend during which a number of mortar shells were fired at southern Israel, including one which landed near Kibbutz Kfar Aza.

Israeli officials beat Palestinian journalist at border crossing
Meanwhile a prominent Palestinian journalist has been hospitalized after being strip-searched and assaulted by Israeli officials at a border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank. The journalist, Mohammed Omer, was on his way back to Gaza after visiting London where he won the prestigious Martha Gellhorn Prize for journalism. Omer is the Gaza correspondent for the Inter Press Service and has been a guest on Democracy Now. According to Omer, Shin Bet officials interrogated him, pointed an M16 gun at his face then forcibly removed all of his clothing. Then officials pinned him to the floor and searched every cavity of his body. He began vomiting and fainted. He was then dragged on the floor with his head banging on the ground. He woke up in a Palestinian hospital.

Despite Israel giving Gaza Back, Palestinians continue to pelt Israel with Rockets...
While neither Prime Minister Ehud Olmert nor Defense Minister Ehud Barak released statements following a Kassam rocket attack on Sderot on Thursday, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni issued an uncharacteristically sharp demand for an immediate military response.
"If Israel does not react strongly and close the crossings [to Gaza] we will be subjected to a daily trickle of rockets in the South in an effort to force us into a pattern where any Israeli action in the West Bank is countered by Kassam fire," he warned. Israel Closes Gaza Crossings - Truce Violated
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel has closed crossings between Israel and Gaza except for Erez crossing on Gaza's northern border, a military source said Wednesday. The closing of the crossings came a day after four rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel by Islamic Jihad. The militant group said its members fired the rockets as revenge for the killing of one of the group's military commanders in the West Bank.
The rocket fire violated the truce that went into effect last week between Israel and Hamas leaders in Gaza. Israel said that under the conditions of the truce, the Hamas leadership in Gaza is responsible for all militant attacks on Israel -- not just those carried out by Hamas militants.
The cease-fire does not apply in the West Bank. Mark Regev, a spokesman for the Israeli prime minister, called Tuesday's attacks "a grave violation" of the truce agreement.
A Hamas spokesman said Tuesday the group remains committed to the cease-fire despite the attacks.

Witnesses said a special Israeli army force stormed the students' residents in a western neighborhood of Nablus, and shot the two students dead.
The Israeli soldiers also arrested five students in the building, but released them after the two were killed, the witnesses said, noting that the Israeli soldiers had deliberately killed the two.
Al-Najah University in Nablus announced a three-day mourning and one-day suspension of lectures to protest the killing of its two students.
Meanwhile, Islamic Jihad armed wing, Saraya al-Quds, confirmed the death of its two militants and vowed in a leaflet that the group will revenge their death soon.
In Gaza, Israeli Radio reported that a homemade mortar shell fired from the Gaza Strip landed at southern Israel.
No injuries were reported and no one in Gaza claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Gaza blockade set to be eased
Israel is expected to begin gradually reopening crossings into the Gaza Strip as a truce between the government and Palestinian armed groups enters its fourth day.
The easing of Israel's siege on Sunday is expected to allow a 30 per cent increase in basic goods entering the strip.
Aid agencies say the amount is below the level needed to meet residents' basic daily needs.

Muslims raise cash for Palestinians
The Muslim community has raised £15,000 through two dinner-fundraisers & collecting money at Bolton's Mosques for humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza via Islamic Relief.
At one of the dinners MP Dr Brian Iddon, gave a presentation about his experiences in Gaza which he visited earlier this year:
He said: "Conditions in Gaza are bleak, with little or no fuel for public services, including garbage collection and ambulances. People have to walk to work, often arriving late, including doctors, nurses and teachers.
"Food distribution is down to the basics and, recently, the UN were unable to distribute food at all. Around 80% of Gazans now rely on charities and the UN to distribute their basic food supplies."
He added: "If electricity fails at al-Shifa hospital for 30 mins, 80 people die and, if it fails for a week, 250 people die."
He added:
This collective punishment on the imprisoned people of Gaza is illegal under international law." The Muslim community has raised £15,000 through two dinner-fundraisers & collecting money at Bolton's Mosques for humanitarian aid... more
