Two Strong Earthquakes Rattle Asia
Two strong earthquakes rattled Asia on Thursday, triggering alerts for a tsunami that harmlessly lapped Japan's northern coast and another in Indonesia that didn't materialize but briefly sent residents fleeing to high ground. NY nuclear plant likely a quake risk
A nuclear power plant that lies within commuting distance of New York City is more likely to be shaken by an earthquake than previously thought because it sits atop a newly identified intersection of two active seismic zones, scientists said.
The Indian Point nuclear reactor is within a mile or two
of both a seismic zone running from Stamford, Connecticut, to Peekskill, New York, and the Ramapo seismic line, said the study by seismologists at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
Large earthquakes are infrequent around New York compared to more active areas like California, but the risk is higher because of the millions of people that live around the largest U.S. city and the infrastructure surrounding it, said Lynn Sykes, the lead author of the study.
Indian Point, which is owned by Entergy Corp, lies about 40 miles north of New York City in the town of Buchanan, which sits on the banks of the Hudson River.
The study said Richter magnitude 5 quakes, which are strong enough to cause damage, occurred around New York in 1737, 1783 and 1884 and that stronger quakes in the area are possible. Thousands join Peru quake protest
Thousands of Peruvians have marched in protest at what they say is the inadequate official response to a quake a year ago that killed 519 people.
The protest took place in the city of Pisco, one of the worst affected by the 8.0-magnitude tremor that also left more than 300,000 people homeless. Strikes were held in Ica and Chincha, which were also near the epicentre. The government says the scale of the devastation hindered reconstruction, but accepts it could have been quicker.
So far, about 30,000 families have received government credits worth $2,045 (£1,100) to help build new homes and bonds for a further 8,000 families are pending. Marching through the main square thousands of Pisco residents showed their frustration that much of their city is still in ruins a year on from the earthquake. Some began at midnight, banging pots and pans and marching around the city's main square.

The Human Cost of Ten Devastating Earthquakes: Priceless
Earthquakes are caused by the shifting of tectonic plates on the earth's surface. When these plates shift, the ground can move violently. Earthquakes have changed the terrain of our planet since the beginning of time. Unfortunately, there has been a high human cost to this major force of nature. Strong earthquake rocks Japan, prompting Tsunami warning
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck off the east coast of Japan, shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo.
Japan's meteorolgical survey had issued a tsunami warning, but the Pacific tsunami warning centre in Hawaii said that there is "no broad threat in the Pacific."
The quake had no fatalities, but is another reminder of the instability of the Japan region: one of the most tectonically active zones in the world. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck off the east coast of Japan, shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo. ... more -
Scientists in quake prediction advance
Scientists have made an important advance in their efforts to predict earthquakes, the journal Nature says.
A team of US researchers has detected stress-induced changes in rocks that occurred hours before two small tremors in California's San Andreas Fault.
The observations used sensors lowered down holes drilled into the quake zone. Scientists have made an important advance in their efforts to predict earthquakes, the journal Nature says. ... more -
Earthquake Lights
Beauty before devastation: less than an hour before the most devastating earthquake China has suffered in decades, Szechuan residents filmed these striking colours in the sky.
This phenomenon has been reported before other quakes in the past, but was discounted as folklore until recently; this documentation of an aurora like appearance in broad daylight is clear evidence that there is something major going on below the ground. Scientists are trying to understand what causes this to occur, and critically, if they could be harnessed to forecast earthquakes.
The leading theory comes from Dr. Friedemann Freund of SETI, who postulated that electrical charge carriers called 'p-holes' (effectively positively charged electrons), are responsible. His experiments confirmed that when large stresses were applied to common crustal rocks, as happens before and during earthquakes, 'clouds' of these p-holes were released, and were also found to emit light.
This provides the most promising explanation for the aurora observed in Szechuan, which may originate in the upper atmosphere, and also for lower, brighter lights observed in an earthquake in Japan; see inamidst.com/lights/kimyo: that's not the sun on the horizon!
Another interesting suggestion by Dr. Freund was that the 'sixth sense' of some animals reported to act strangely before big earthquakes, may be a result to these p-hole clouds being released.
Although interesting to scientists, these visible disturbances related to earthquakes point to new avenues of study to reduce the tragic human consequences of these natural events.
I would appreciate other users, particularly with a background in Physics or Earth science giving their opinion

One reported dead in Greek quake
At least one person has reportedly been killed as an earthquake rocked southern Greece, collapsing buildings and causing panic.
Several injuries were reported from falling roofs as the tremor - which had an epicentre 200 kilometres (124 miles) west of Athens - struck near Patras.
The quake had a magnitude of 6.5, the Athens Geodynamic Institute said, and could be felt in the capital.
Greece is one of Europe's most earthquake-prone countries.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1.
Experts have warned that aftershocks are likely as the quake's epicentre in the Peloponnese region was close to the ground's surface.
"It was terrible," Makis Paraskevopoulos, the mayor of the southern town of Pyrgos, told state television.
"We have never lived through something like this before. It was very long and we felt that the town was being flattened." At least one person has reportedly been killed as an earthquake rocked southern Greece, collapsing buildings and causing panic. ... more -

"Confident" China rules out post-quake epidemics
Chinese medical teams have fanned out across the earthquake zone, disinfecting makeshift camps and educating survivors, and on Monday the Health Ministry said it could guarantee there would be no epidemics.
Where bodies could not be cremated, they had been been buried deep underground and far from water sources to prevent contamination, ministry spokesman Mao Qunan said.
"Theoretically, when there is a large movement of people, the risk increases for the spread of transmittable diseases," he said on a webcast on central government website www.gov.cn.
