Shake Girl, The Graphic Novel
"Shake Girl is a massive collaborative effort between fifteen students and two instructors over the course of one quarter (Winter 2008). These students comprise the first edition of the Stanford Graphic Novel Project -- a group dedicated to acheiving this monumental task on an annual basis.
The Stanford Graphic Novel Project independently published several hundred copies of Shake Girl that we are using to create awareness about the issues of violence against women, and more specifically, the phenomenon of acid attacks in Cambodia. For these same reasons, we are publishing Shake Girl for free on the web. -- though we encourage readers to donate to charities that help ammend the human right violations that currently occur in Cambodia." Terror Comix
This week's New Yorker features a great profile about Ernie Colón and Sid Jacobson's renewed collaborations on turning the 9/11 Commission Report into a graphic novel. Colón and Jacobson, who are in their seventies, have been a long-time creative team producing titles such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, Little Audrey and Little Dot for Harvey Comics. They have also continued their work in comics for both D.C. Comics and Marvel Comics. Check out Mark Singer's profile of Colón and Jacobson's adaptation of the 9/11 Commission Report. Kaa-pow!

CG purists scoff at use of real sets for Watchmen
Sorry folks...if you're looking for yet another computer generated fantasy world with Zack Snyder's adaptation of Watchmen, you're going to be thankfully disappointed.
I didn't see 300, but I can say that it at least appeared to be a faithfully rendered adaptation of Miller's graphic novel. Using a CG to create that sense of hyper-reality makes sense, but Watchmen is a different beast. Moore's tale was never intended to root in the hyper-real, but rather the tangible alternative. What if Nixon found a way to end the Vietnam war? What if superheroes were real? What if?
Hearing that actual sets are being designed brings hope to something that even Moore has deemed "unfilmable." Click through to Gizmodo to see a behind-the-scenes video blog of sets being designed...yes, ACTUAL sets! 'Watchmen' Costumes Revealed!
Watchmen fanboys rejoice! It actually looks really cool. Nice level of reality meets superheroness, which is obviously key to the book. 365 days to go!
"Good to see he's taking the route of the recent Batman films, exchanging the only-works-on-paper-and-'80s-workout-video spandex for something slightly more practical, while still maintaining the overall feel of each character and not adding nipple casings." Shooting War trailer
It's 2011. McCain is President. South America is in the midst of an oil war, and Iran is lining up troops at the Iraqi border.
So begins the new graphic novel "Shooting War" by Anthony Lappe. We can only imagine where it goes from there. If it's half as good as this trailer makes it look, it's freakin sweet. It's 2011. Holy Hot Flash, Batman! After 66 years a woman takes over 'Wonder Woman'
Women are finally breaking into the boys' comics club. With the release of this month's "Wonder Woman" No. 14, the superhero gets her first permanent, ongoing female scribe, Gail Simone, just as alternative and foreign comics by women are gaining visibility. The movie "Persepolis," based on Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir about the Iranian revolution, opened Christmas Day, and Megan Kelso's multipart strip "Watergate Sue," about a Nixon-era family, was recently featured in The New York Times Magazine. Kelso's graphic story collection "The Squirrel Mother" was well reviewed, as was Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic-novel memoir "Fun Home." Manga, a Japanese style of comic featuring huge-eyed characters and often including elements of fantasy, has spawned a female-oriented subset, shojo manga, some of which outsells regular manga.
The ladies aren't exactly kicking the guys off the planet yet -- "Spider-Man 3" was the top-grossing movie last year -- but they're no longer the comics equivalent of kryptonite, either. Women are finally breaking into the boys' comics club. With the release of this month's "Wonder Woman" No. 14, the... more -
