Opposition for gay marriages in NY
Opposition arises after governor's directive to recognize unions.
Religious and social conservatives vowed Thursday to fight Gov. David Paterson's directive requiring state agencies to recognize gay marriages performed legally elsewhere, saying it flouts traditional values and is a big step toward legalizing same-sex unions in New York.
"The definition of marriage predates recorded history," said New York State Catholic Conference Executive Director Richard E. Barnes. "No single politician or court or legislature should attempt to redefine the very building block of our society in a way that alters its entire meaning and purpose."
Gov. Paterson issued a memo earlier this month saying that gay New Yorkers who marry where it is legal will have the right to share family health care plans, receive tax breaks by filing jointly, enjoy stronger adoption rights and inherit property.
He cited a February ruling in a New York Appellate Division court in which the judges determined that there is no legal impediment in New York to the recognition of a same-sex marriage.
Meanwhile in California, there's good news for gay marriages

Dozens of Muslims ‘Donate A Day’ in New York City
NEW YORK – Painting benches, gardening, trash cleanup, farm games, and arts and crafts projects are just some of the activities volunteers participated in during Donate A Day 2008 in New York City on April 14, held by The Islamic Center Khairat Committee at New York University and World Faith.
This interfaith event included several simultaneous community service projects all over the city, including Manhattan, Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx. Participating organizations included NY Cares, a group of people who cleaned parks, schools and gardens throughout the city.
About 65 people signed up for the day-long event, said Halima Samad, head of community service for the Khairat committee.
"You don’t need money to do good," Samad said. "Just give one day to people who need it."
Volunteer Maryum Khwajan (a social worker), who was assigned to clean a park in the Bronx, said an event like Donate a Day changes people’s outlooks on life. She also said even though she got so muddy she had to throw out her shoes, she found it was well worth it.
"The experience was so humbling," she said. "You tend to forget how needy people really are."
Volunteer Robert Gargano, who is not Muslim, said he was happy to see boundaries broken down between the different faiths.
"To take part in an event that shares with everyone that kids are kids and time and health are precious to all was a breath of fresh air," he said.
Samad said the center plans to make Donate A Day an annual event.
"It was successful," she said. "But next time, we hope to reach out to more non-Muslims."
Co-sponsors of the event included the Office of Graduate Student Life at the Student Resource Center, The United Muslim Association, World Faith, The Islamic Center at NYU Alumni Association and The Catholic Center at NYU. New York imam forges close ties with city's Jews
The largest Mosque in NY, the ICC, is getting applause from the city's influential Jewish community. Mohammad Shamsi Ali is the Mosque's Indonesian born-imam.
Rabbis who've spoken there call it an open and welcoming community. The Jewish Theological Seminary and the ICC are planning a joint soup kitchen for the homeless. The mosque is organizing an inter-religious studies program for teenagers.
"What I heard Shamsi Ali preach was as fine a sermon on brotherhood as has ever been preached," said Visotzky, professor of midrash (scriptural interpretation) and inter-faith studies across town at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Rabbi Marc Schneier spoke at the ICC last year and invited the imam to speak in his Synagogue last month:
"It was impressive when he spoke to the congregation about Israel's territorial integrity and how suicide bombings are a perversion of the Koran and Islam."
The imam has taken part in the prayer at an inter-faith memorial service in Yankee Stadium two weeks after the September 11 attacks. Ali has also been active in larger inter-faith initiatives such as the National Dialogue of Muslims and Catholics and Imams and Rabbis conferences in the United States and abroad. New NY Governor David Paterson takes oath
Disgraced Gov. Eliot Spitzer's resignation became official Monday, paving the way for Lt. Gov. David Paterson to take the oath of office and become New York's chief executive.
Spitzer's term, cut short after allegations surfaced that he hired a call girl from a high-priced escort service, officially ended at noon. He resigned last week, a stunning fall from power for the crusader who vowed to rid the state Capitol of corruption.
At his swearing-in as the state's 55th governor, Paterson plans to use his inaugural speech to project confidence and optimism, while relating his own personal struggles to New York's ability to overcome challenges, an aide said. Torre and the Yankees
Joe Torre is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, there is no question about that. As a player and coach he succeeded on the highest levels. I can't blame the Boss (not Bruce but George) for getting rid of Torre but I can protest against the way in which this was handled, or mishandled. It has been common knowledge for a while now that Steinbrenner has taken issue with Joe Torre for a number of reasons. However, after the 1st two losses to Cleveland, Mr. Steinbrenner made a classless move by kicking Torre out by ultimatum. Either the Yanks win or Joe gets fired. No matter what happened this post season it is hard to see how Torre couldve come back. I know that the Yankees expect a championship every year but for a guy that has meant so much to his players, the organization and the city of New York this was just not the correct way to deal with this. I'm old enough to have seen Mr. Steinbrenner pull some pretty cold moves but this was the worst yet. Joe Torre I salute you and wish you the best.
