SXSW- Day 1
First night @ SXSW. Lots of walking around, eating, and a really really great vibe. Austin is amazing. Got to catch up with Chris Holland, Chris Hyams (both from BSide), Arin Crumley, Lance Weiler, and many more. Prince Paul was also amazing. And I discovered Nerdcore through lifecasting 'hip-hop' nerd MC Frontalot! First night @ SXSW. Lots of walking around, eating, and a really really great vibe. Austin is amazing. College students prefer casual sex to long term relationships: No sh@T!
In this brilliant article by Sue Shellenbarger of the Wall Street Journal she details the lives of several students that have focused on their careers instead of searching for a life long partner. This of course results in the fast and wild world of the "Hook-Up" culture!
I think it is a little naive to say that hook-up culture exists because students are focusing on their careers. Maybe she's just painting a rosy picture because she tells us that her own daughter is in college. I think it is far more likely that young people who have no idea what they want to do with their life and are scared to death of a real relationship are just screwing their brains out until the real world comes crashing in on their bacchanalian paradise.
I actually met my fiancé in college, but we didn't date until 5 years later and I know for sure that if we had dated in college the situation would have ended badly. She nor I were any where near the people we needed to be in order to get married.
So I say meet great people in college, build long term friends and if the "hook-up" culture is working for you, by all means have at it. You may never have a chance again!
Oh yeah and focus on your career. ... more -

Casual Work Dress is for Losers! Wearing a Tie is Where it's At!
I never gave up on the tie! (Still more fun to see a girl wear one...)
I admit in lieu of the tie I wear a lanyard with my work key-card hung on it, which is a clear power symbol similar to a tie, but any chance I get I sport the tie. I never gave up on the tie! (Still more fun to see a girl wear one...) ... more -
Thompson's First Debate: He Kinda Looked Like a Doofus.
The headline on this video says that Senator Fred Thompson looked "Shaky," during his first GOP debate, but I thought he looked silly. His tie was too tight and his head looked too big and his answers seemed contrived and weird. Who knows maybe this type of swaggering from the actor will appeal to the Republican base, but if Thompson wants to compete maybe he should stick with pithy ironic YouTube videos to conduct his campaign. Meet Sidney Crosby
Don't watch hockey much but this kid is worth checking out.
"For a kid who can't legally buy a beer in Pittburgh, Sidney Crosby (he won't be 21 until next August!) has done pretty well for himself in the NHL.
In his first season at age 18 (and 253 days), he became the youngest player in league history to reach the 100-point plateau, totaling 102. He accomplished the feat by finishing the season with a fantastic flurry, racking up 37 points in his final 23 games." Don't watch hockey much but this kid is worth checking out. ... more -
