    • Raul Castro becomes Cuba's leader

Raul Castro (Fidel's brother) was named president today (Sunday) by Cuba's parliament, marking a close to 50 years of rule by Fidel.

Many hoped that it would being about change in the communist government's policies. However, this is probably not going to happen. Especially when Raul said he would be consulting with his brother Fidel "on all major decisions of the state."

The Annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is accepting the participation of You Tube user in its Congress Center viewing and answering the significant suggestion to what companies or individuals must do in order to make the World a better place in 2008.
Most of the conflicts we have in the World today is caused by economic inequality and its consequences.
The idea that corporation, which in many aspects decide the way other human beings and the environment are treated, are considering to take in consideration opinion and ideas of single individuals, like you and I, make me feel quiet optimist about the possibilities of a future with fair way of living for all!
So, it's up to you! You've up to January 27, 2008 to address them!

    • Russia WILL use pre-emptive nuclear strikes

In a speech given to a military conference Gen Yuri Baluyevsky, Russia's military chief of staff stated that Russia is prepared to use pre-emptive nuclear strikes on countries which threaten the sovereignty of their land.

"We do not intend to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons,"

They are some strong words, considering the fact that the speech was broadcast on state TV I can't imagine that Baluyevsky wasn't aware that the international press would pick up on it. Let's hope that this isn't a message intended as a warning to a particular country...

    • Islamic insurgency spilling into Peshawar, Pakistan

'Suicide bombings, bomb explosions and missile attacks occurred an average of once a week in Peshawar in 2007, according to a tally by the city's police department. In 2006, while there were occasional grenade attacks and explosions, the authorities did not record a single suicide bombing or rocket attack inside the city.
Though few in the city believe that the Taliban will rule anytime soon, the police and residents say that, by the standards of counterinsurgency warfare, the extremists are doing well. They have undermined public faith in the government, sown distrust and made the police fearful for their lives.'::NY Times.

    • Tamil Tigers kill 28 with bus bomb

More than 28 civilians were killed and dozens wounded when a roadside bomb blew up a crowded bus in southern Sri Lanka, as a six-year ceasefire between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels ran out.

After the blast, gunmen shot passengers as they tried to flee, according to witnesses. "Everyone that got out through the doors, they shot and killed," Sampath, a 25-year-old passenger, told Associated Press. "I jumped from the window and just escaped."

The defence ministry said the bus was destroyed by a Claymore-style mine packed with explosives, nails and ball bearings - the signature bomb of the Tamil Tiger rebels.

    • Congress Likely To OK Saudi Arms Deal

Watch whether Obama and Clinton either skip this vote or vote yes. Either way it should make many see who they really support when they say they want to "make change." I am absolutely fed up with this Congress regardless of which party supposedly is in the "majority." We cannot provide healthcare to all of our citizens but we can afford multi billion dollar arms deals? I will for SURE be watching who votes which way very carefully. At least Reps Weiner and Wexler are standing up to it. I will be calling my reps to do the same thing. Watch whether Obama and Clinton either skip this vote or vote yes. • Bhutto Buried

Benazir Bhutto has been buried as thousands in Pakistan mourned and fights broke out across the country.

Initial reports indicated she had been hit by the gun shots that proceeded the explosion, then accounts said she was killed by shrapnel from the bombing, but an official is now saying that she died as a result of a fracture from hitting her head on the roof of her car as she dove to avoid injury from the shooting and explosion, but that nothing had entered her head.

    • Bombs ≠ Stable

So who else feels like every time we open our mouths to say that Iraq is "safe" or "stable", that there's another spate of bombings and deaths? I am starting to think it's a cause and effect relationship, and that bombers make a point of killing a bunch of people every time a U.S. politician says things are getting better, just to prove they're not!

This time, it was Robert Gates, on an unannounced visit to Iraq to meet with leaders and encourage the political process, who said that stability in the country is within reach. Meanwhile 4 car bombs across the country killed over 20 people.
