LA: RANK and Crudo @LAXART thru September 6
Centered upon a highly polished mirrored podium exaggerated to architectural scale,RANK mimics the visual logic and cultural pervasiveness of a recent and forthcoming political theater. By restaging this trope of public speech at a time in which the nation awaits the upcoming presidential election, Kori Newkirk heightens the charge and urgency surrounding this ubiquitous form.
Filmed both in New York and Mexico City, Crudo takes the viewer on a theatrical, percussive journey led by an unidentified white-suited man, wielding pieces of raw meat, who encounters a group of angry dogs. Mixing elements of dance from Veracruz, American tap, and Argentinean malambo sureño, the dancer’s percussive footwork drives the narrative tension of the scenario, counterbalanced by the tethered pieces of raw meat that swing around to provoke the angry animals – here hired to perform and engage with the dancer’s movements. Atlanta Underground Film Festival
The Fifth Annual Atlanta Underground Film Festival (AUFF) takes place August 20 - 24, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 2008 AUFF will showcase every genre of independent film from across the world during this celebration of the independent artist. AUFF is a forum where artists can thrive outside the mainstream arena. Creative artists who continuously break the boundaries of film, video, art and music are promoted through AUFF, so they too may have a voice in a market which is typically saturated with commercial entertainment designed to satisfy the audience's expectations.

Paul McCarthy: Central Symmetrical Rotation Movement
Chrissie Iles, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, discusses Paul McCarthy: Central Symmetrical Rotation Movement. This exhibition brings together a group of new and rarely seen works by Paul McCarthy (b. 1945), one of the most important American artists of his generation. The installations, films, photographs, and drawings on view focus on a central element of McCarthy's practice: the way the body is destabilized through dislocations of architectural space. The disorientation that threads though all of the works shown here is at once formal, corporeal, and psychological. The screens, projectors, and rotating cameras of Spinning Room place the viewer at the center of hypnotic environment whereas the moving walls and doors of Bang Bang Room collapse our notion of stable architectural space. In Madhouse the walls and chair spinning at varying speeds conjure a similar state of physical and mental disorientation. 1000 Journals in San Francisco
The 1000 Journals Project was started in San Francisco, in the summer of 2000, eight years ago. And now we're coming back to San Francisco, after our wonderful run at the San Francisco International Film Festival, to show the film for a week at the Roxie Theater. This is quite a milestone in the life of the documentary: our first theatrical booking, with hopefully more to come across the country.
If you live in San Francisco, please come and join us at the Roxie, and bring your friends. If you know folks in S.F., please tell them. We'll show journals during the opening weekend, and are around to answer questions.
1000 Journals opens on Friday, August 1st, 2008.
The showtimes are every day at 7:00 and 8:50 PM, and additionally,
Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday at 2:30 and 4:45 PM.
