Chest Whistling
Mongolian throat singing is a traditional form of music where the singer is able to sing multiple octaves at once using only his throat to make the sound. It is an amazing feat, something that is hard to believe. I spent one afternoon walking around Mongolia's capital, Ulanbaatar, in search of someone who could tell me more about this traditional form of expression. Spurred on by my sister's obsession with said music, I spent the whole day until I eventually ran into Zagd Ochir at the Tumen Ekh Ensemble in downtown UB. This is what he shared with me. Like A Local
Like A Local reflects the desire for a new group of upwardly mobile, young, hip travelers to get a different experience when visiting new cities. Rather than offer the typical cheesy, tour bus experience, Like A Local (started by three young Dutch girls two years ago) hooks clients up with cool, young knowledgeable locals in any of the cities they service (there are about 20 now, NYC, London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, etc). Basically, you can log on to the site and within minutes you can literally line up and RENT a local to hang out with in a given city. Our pod follows Maru and Dirk, a young couple who live in the Gracia district of Barcelona as they host a young Milwaukee couple who wants to see a cooler side of Barcelona. Slum Safari
I always felt uneasy with the idea of guided tour of a slum as part of a tourist itinerary of Rio de Janeiro is it just shameless voyeurism or a way to experience the favela, where many argue lies the cultural heart of the city? For this film, I embark on a rather unusual journey to experience first-hand this new industry of favela tourism from cruising through Rochina in the back of a jeep with a bunch of scared tourists to staying in a Favela Hotel wondering if the gunshots will keep me up at night. Along the way I speak to tourists, residents and guides to find out whether favela tourism helps the community or exploits it.
