Toshiba Officially Pulls Plug, Good Bye HD-DVD
Toshiba made things official this morning, by throwing in the hi-def towel, stating that they would no longer manufacture, develop, or market HD-DVD hardware. In the meantime, the company is set to reduce shipments of players and recorders, ceasing the wing of their business entirely by the end of next month. It's official. HD DVD is dead
Japan's NHK and now Reuters has followed up The Hollywood Reporter's earlier indications Toshiba was ready to dump its money-losing HD DVD business, with news that the company is prepared to cease manufacturing software and hardware, at a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars. This caps the worst week ever for little red, when HD DVD was dumped by Netflix, got a Dear John letter from Wal-mart, and was pushed to the background by Best Buy.
Toshiba is mum on the subject right now, but we hear there's plenty of cheap players and movies in a dumpster around back of the HQ.
Don't worry HD DVD, we have a plot reserved for you at the cemetery right in between the Betamax and Divx. Japan's NHK and now Reuters has followed up The Hollywood Reporter's earlier indications Toshiba was ready to dump its money... more -

HD-DVD Death Rattle
Rumors just won't stop about the future of HD DVD. The Digital Bits is reporting that their "second to none" sources informed them that both Universal and Paramount are in the process of going blu.
But don't bother asking 'em, because the same contracts that prevent them from switching now, prevent them from confirming the rumor. In addition, sources tell The Digital Bits that while Paramount could make an announcement any day now, Universal's won't come until February -- at the earliest -- because "their contract period with the HD-DVD camp expires at the end of January." Microsoft Switch Reverse It...
According to Gamermode, the latest company to jump on the Blu-Ray bandwagon is none other than Microsoft iteslf, the backers of the rival HD-DVD format.
So it seems that XBOX 360 Will Be Spinning The Blu-Ray.
In the bigger picture, this format battle has been a bit boring, not living up to the Betamax vs. VHS battle or even surpassing the almost 'secret' launch of the Sony's Minidisc as an alternative to CD. Got to love Microsoft, always have a 'plan b,' regardless if it means going back on your original ideas. Paramount Set to Drop HD DVD for Blu-ray
How many "death blows" will it take for Blu-ray to finally win the format war against HD DVD? I've been hearing that phrase (and writing about it) since July 2007. Well here comes another one. Following in the footsteps of Warner Brothers' abandonment of the HD DVD format, reports are surfacing that Paramount is headed to Blu-ray as well.
This is huge news not just because it would leave just one major studio (Universal, plus the mini-major DreamWorks) producing HD DVD content. It would mark the first time in the high-def war that a studio has abandoned one exclusive format and switched to another. Warner was producing both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs and merely dropped the HD DVD ones. Paramount will have to switch entirely to Blu-ray, which it has not been producing up to now.
According to the Financial Times, Paramount has a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp allowing it to switch to Blu-ray in the event that Warner was to do so. And exercising that clause is what's about to happen. It's also theorized that DreamWorks will follow Paramount, since the studios are closely tied together.
Nothing's been announced yet, but this should be wrapped up in fairly short order. Stay tuned. How many "death blows" will it take for Blu-ray to finally win the format war against HD DVD? I've been hearing that ph... more -
HD-DVD Dead?
The departure of Warner Bros. from the HD-DVD camp last week left only Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal standing by the format. The Financial Times are reporting that part of Paramount Studio's deal with the HD-DVD camp included a get-out clause. Said clause would be triggered when and if Warner turned coat and signed with Blu-Ray. Oops. Paramount are now "poised" to do just that, leaving the vast majority of studios aligned with team Blu-Ray and HD-DVD dead in the water. The departure of Warner Bros. from the HD-DVD camp last week left only Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal standing by the format. The... more

Warner Bros. to Only Sell Blu-Ray Discs
In a move that could tip the balance of power in a format war over the next-generation of DVDs, Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. Entertainment said it plans to release high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format, in the process dealing a major blow to rival HD DVD.
The move means the rival HD DVD format, which is backed by Toshiba Corp., will be left with support from just two major studios: Universal Pictures and Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures. The other major studios ? Warner Bros., Sony Corp., Walt Disney Co., News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox? are committed to Blu-ray exclusively. The two formats are incompatible, meaning that buyers of HD DVD players cannot play movies issued in Blu-ray, and vice versa. Paramount, Dreamworks dropping Blu-ray in favor of HD DVD exclusivity
"Affiliations in the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war have been pretty clearly defined for nearly two years now -- despite a hybrid player here and some international releases there, most of the players involved have not switched support since the early days. Well that's all about to change, as Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animation -- which started off HD DVD only before deciding to go both ways -- have officially announced plans to release movies exclusively on HD DVD, dropping Blu-ray support entirely. This means that hits like Transformers, Shrek the Third and Blades of Glory won't follow Mission: Impossible III as cross-format releases when they debut this holiday season. Paramount has released about 30 movies on Blu-ray so far, but those days have come to an end: apparently cheaper HD players trump a 2:1 sales advantage. We can't wait to see how the Blu-ray camp responds to this." "Affiliations in the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war have been pretty clearly defined for nearly two years now -- despite a hybrid ... more
