Despite Everything Commuters Continue to Drive Alone
For a while it seemed that commuters were changing their driving habits in response to high gas prices. Apparently, the change was less dramatic than some media made it out to be.
A recent survey found:
- One in four (26%) working Americans say they have made adjustments to their commuting habits in the last year to deal with the increased cost of getting to work.
- Despite this, however, eight in 10 (84%) say their primary mode of transportation for getting to work is still their car, which they drive alone.
- Just 5 percent of workers carpool, and reliance on public transportation is still very low. Only 2 percent of workers take the train or subway as their primary transportation to get to work, while another 3 percent ride the bus.
- And whether they're the majority driving the highways or the minority taking public transportation, the typical American worker commutes an average of 13.9 miles one way--with one in five (19%) traveling more than 25 miles to get to work.

community carpooling - australia - WWW.NEEDARIDE.COM.AU
Hi
I found carpooling looking for transport from sydney to newcastle over the christmas period.
The train lines are being upgraded to accommodate for the newer trains so tracks are unusable.
I was pretty much beside myself thinking of way to get there for the xmas break easier than waiting in queues and paying high money for the only bus company on route to newcastle and back which of course is GREYHOUND AUSTRALIA true to their name.
Any way I remembered a friend mentioned carpooling.
So I googled it and FACEBOOK came up which another friend had told to look at anyway.
I dont see the point in requesting a lift from newcastle to sydney and back from america but it got me thinking.
so googled needaride.com.au (pure intutition that one !) and it came up with the exact website for carpooling in australia. Better than buses and trains.
And you get to talk and ride and make a new friend at the same time and save the environment and be part of a close community.!!!!
Highly recommended for travels and commuters.

The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
Cuba, an isolated island nation, rebuilt its quality of life following the collapse of cheap oil, supplied by the former Soviet Union. This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.
This also gives us an excellent example of how to deal with the crisis that is facing us, how to survive after oil becomes unavailable, how to feed ourselves and empower farmers.
Requires DivX to be installed - you can get it free from here: http://tinyurl.com/2zuxrs
While you are playing the video, the rest of your monitor screen might go dark or even black. This is normal, it is a feature of Stage6 (the video hosting site) to make viewing of videos more pleasant without anything else on your monitor to distract the eye.
