A little video to memorialize our trip to California Extreme!
Last weekend, I brought my trusty digital camera to the California Extreme classic arcade and pinball convention in San Jose, CA.
Set to the music of the New Pornographers, this shaky-hand footage is from Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Parkside Hall. Marvel at the throngs of arcade enthusiasts! Balk at Revenge from Mars and Cactus Canyon! Be astounded by Top Skater and Lucky Hand! And witness much, much more!

California Extreme Arcade and Pinball Show July 19-20 2008
Well into the Spring and Summer Geek Events Season in the Bay Area, San Jose this weekend hosts "California Extreme" - "the 'Classic Arcade Games Show'.", "an annual celebration of coin operated pinball machines, video games and other novelties you once found in game arcades. All games on display are set for free play, so leave your quarters in the ash tray in your car. You won't need 'em."
Seriously, this is a ton of fun - and if the games aren't enough, perhaps you're interested in some pinball pointers, or are interested in Donkey Kong II, or some classic arcade trivia - Saturday features a full speaker lineup. Incredible home arcade
Peter Hirschberg is a simple man who has made a hobby out of restoring old arcade games. Drumming to Super Mario 2
Super Mario 2 has a great soundtrack. In this awesome rendition, though, Andrea Vadrucci proves that everything sounds better with percussion. We're also impressed by his drum set itself --- that thing is at least fifteen pieces.
The Italian drummer just plays his beats on top of the 8-bit Mario songs, but we love it. Vadrucci is clearly very talented. If there's anything we've learned from games like Rock Band, it's that drumming isn't as easy as it looks. Super Mario 2 has a great soundtrack. "We've never really watched much of Attack of the Show, but we hear it's hosted by some nerdy types that are somehow better looking than us -- which simply can't be correct. All that aside, those (debatably) sexy nerds have taken it upon themselves to build the world's largest arcade machine, and even invited over the Guinness Book of World Records folks to check it out on tonight's show. The arcade machine stands more than 13-feet tall, sports a 70-inch or so screen, and probably runs Doom. Happy 30th Birthday Atari 2600!
See that Wii or Xbox sitting under your TV? The PSP or DS tucked away in your messenger bag? That copy of Pac-man on your cellphone which cost five bucks and expires next month? Each of them owe a debt of gratitude to the granddaddy of all videogame consoles, the Atari 2600, which ushered in an era of unprecedented television usage, and which turns 30 years old this month. I still have mine and play it quite often. To me, nothing is more relaxing after a long day than a rousing game of Yar's Revenge or Spider Fighter.
