Bebo founder wants to out-dictionary the dictionary
Michael Birch, who sold Bebo to AOL earlier this year for $850 million, is now planning a social video dictionary.
Birch has teamed up with a television producer, Edward Blake, to create Wordia. The idea is based on the popularity of Wikipedia and YouTube, but leans on the notion idea that people are insanely in love with the English language.
Will it take off? I suppose when you have $850 million in the bank anything is possible. Michael Birch, who sold Bebo to AOL earlier this year for $850 million, is now planning a social video dictionary. ... more -

Get ready to pay extra for going over your "internet allowance"
You're used to paying extra if you use up your cell phone minutes, but will you be willing to pay extra if your home computer goes over its Internet allowance?
Time Warner Cable Inc. customers -- and, later, others -- may have to, if the company's test of metered Internet access is successful. On Thursday, new Time Warner Cable Internet subscribers in Beaumont, Texas, will have monthly allowances for the amount of data they upload and download.

What’s in a username?
Researchers at the University of Leipzig in Germany have carried out a study and found that an email address may speak volumes about the character of the person who created the unique online identification.
According to lead researcher Mitja Back, even the thinnest slice of communication via the world wide web - the mere e-mail address -- contains valid information about the personality of its owner.
In their study, the researchers asked a panel of 100 students to guess the personalities of 600 young adults simply by looking at their e-mail addresses. Researchers at the University of Leipzig in Germany have carried out a study and found that an email address may speak volumes about t... more -

NY Met's 8th Inning Rickroll
The New York Mets are running a contest to chose what sing-along song gets played at Shea Stadium this year. The jokesters over at Digg — who haven't heard that rickrolling is over — got the idea to stuff the ballot box in favor of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up." "All year, the Mets and their fans will get rickrolled during the 8th inning."
Other songs being voted on include "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison and the theme from Friends. During the time I've been writing this post, the prank has gotten more than 1,000 Diggs. I suspect this just might work — and end up in the New York Times, to boot.

The internet is just a fad
"What the Internet hucksters won't tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don't know what to ignore and what's worth reading.
Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them--one's a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn't work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, 'Too many connectios, try again later'
Then there's cyberbusiness. We're promised instant catalog shopping--just point and click for great deals. We'll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet--which there isn't--the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople.
A poor substitute it is, this virtual reality where frustration is legion and where--in the holy names of Education and Progress--important aspects of human interactions are relentlessly devalued." Hackers now pose a threat to pacemakers
A recent study found implanted heart defibrillators could be hacked.
The University of Washington experiment found that computer hackers might intercept transmissions to and from the heart monitor.
The researchers said they had also been able to glean personal patient data by eavesdropping on signals from the tiny wireless radio that Medtronic, the device’s maker, had embedded in the implant as a way to let doctors monitor and adjust it without surgery.
Radios have been used in implants for decades to enable doctors to test them during office visits. But device makers have begun designing them to connect to the INTERNET =D which allows doctors to monitor patients from remote locations. Update: Scandal, Intrigue on the YouTubes: Hot Hot Sex
YouTube is investigating a sudden surge in traffic that boosted a clip of a Brazilian pop band to the top of its most viewed video chart.
The clip called Music is My Hot Hot Sex is by the Brazilian electro band Cansei De Ser Sexy and it has been viewed by nearly 90 million people.
However, in just three weeks, it got 40 million views pushing it from tenth place to YouTube's top position and the surge has left YouTube fans wondering if the 'books have been cooked'.
Update:
The video's Italian creator, who uses the pseudonym Clarus Bartel, had described the video as "ugly" and "made on a whim"
In an unexpected twist, the Italian factory worker, blogger, and amateur photographer who uploaded the video last year, has deleted the clip which was listed as having been viewed a world record 114.3 million times. Evolution Of Dance ranked second with 78.6 million views.
