In our society growing food yourself has become the most radical of acts. It is truly the only effective protest, one that can, and will overturn the corporate powers that be.

    • Facebook - The world's youngest self-made billionaire!

Facebook has attracted more users than there are people in Germany - and the man behind it is the youngest self-made billionaire in history. Mark Zuckerberg (24), founder of the online networking website sensation, told BILD about his success.
      Mark Zuckerberg

More than 400 Facebook fans were waiting at the Technical University in Berlin yesterday lunchtime for their 'guru', who favours flip-flops as his shoe of choice.

When he arrived, hardly anyone recognised or even noticed him: shy, reserved, not a bodyguard in sight and because of the cold, wearing trainers for a change. He could have been one of the students, but Zuckerberg will probably never have to study again.

Zuckerberg was born on May 14 1984 in Dobbs Ferry, New York to a good Jewish family, and his father is a dentist. From an early age, he hacked into computers, wrote his own programs and in the autumn of 2002, he arrived at Harvard University.

On February 15, 2004, he launched Facebook online. “I knew students would use a site where they could share information. I didn’t think that my site would become the most visited address in the world,” Zuckerberg said.

      Success story

Some 45 colleges were registered on the site in the summer of 2004. By the end of the year, Facebook had one million members.
      more news

In 2005, the first applications were added to the site. From 2006 on, members could publish messages (the ‘what are you doing right now?’ function) and the number of members had risen to over five million. “I didn’t need to go to university anymore,” he said.

From 2007, members were able to upload their own programs such as games. In 2008, the site was translated into other languages, and today 110 million people are registered.

Zuckerberg added: “Most people have families, friends and colleagues with whom they want to share their life. That’s why the site has really taken off.”

In Germany, 1.2 million people already use Facebook. “Germany is important,“ said Zuckerman, “and funny. I’ve just learned that you sort your rubbish into five different bins here, cool!”

    • Brunettes getting paid more than blondes?

A report has been unveiled that indicates brunettes earn on average £4,250 more a year than their blonde counterparts, and have more relationships.

It's a tenuous excuse for the Daily Mail to recycle lots of glitzy celebrity photos and compare famous women by their physical merits, but who am I to judge...

3,000 women were surveyed by hair colourists Schwarzkopf & Henkel and 44% per cent of those with dyed or natural brown hair said this was the shade which gave them the greatest success with the opposite sex - a 10% higher rate than blondes.

And 20 per cent of brunettes boasted of five relationships or more in the past, while only 13 per cent of blondes could say the same.

Schwarzkopf & Henkel said: "It's always assumed blondes have more fun, therefore had more success in their love lives and careers too.

"Our research shows that blondes still do have more fun but aren't taken as seriously as women with darker hair - both at work and play. Brunettes are climbing the career ladder quicker as well as having better luck in love"

Quick, quick! Get yourself down a hair salon and dye your hair for greater success! What a convenient conclusion for Schwarzkopf & Henkel, eh?

And yes, perhaps it was a slow news day for this to make it to the headlines. But if this survey reflects reality (does it?), what does that say about the way women (and men) are judged based on their looks, in work and in love? Do you think how you look really extends to how much you earn? Have you earned more and had better relationships with darker hair than blonde? Or is this survey just a tired excuse for a hair colouring company to attach some economic and social benefits to getting your hair done?

    • Defeating the Bush Agenda

From his second-floor office inside San Francisco City Hall, Mayor Gavin Newsom heard the commotion every few minutes just below his window: yet another newly married same-sex couple laughing their way down the structure’s ornate stone front steps.

“All of them,” he said, “are cheers of joy.”

In 2004, Newsom kicked off the so-called “Winter of Love” when he oversaw the marriage of thousands of gay and lesbian couples at City Hall, only to see them overturned by the courts. Four years later, in light of the recent state Supreme Court ruling lifting the ban on same-sex unions, Newsom says he hopes the marriages this time will be recognized by the nation and the world.

But along with the joy has come the jeering: Those against same-sex unions have picketed outside City Hall. Newsom said he was particularly offended at one sign that referred to gays as “fags.”

“That is such a schoolyard slang term,” he said. “It’s understandable with a 6-year-old who knows no better, but to have an adult use that word in this day and age is unbelievable.”
He urged state voters not to be duped by what he called a conservative agenda put forth by President Bush.

“Defeating gay marriage is literally the Bush agenda -- being carried out by his surrogates in California,” Newsom said. “I don’t want to see Bush’s legacy carried out in our state. Voters are smarter than that in California." For Newsom, Tuesday was an emotional as well as a political day. While performing the wedding of two women, one with advanced breast cancer, Newsom said he choked back so much emotion he could barely speak.
“These are the moments that put life into perspective,” said the mayor, who lost his own mother to the disease. But Newsom said he didn’t have time to celebrate after officiating at one of the state’s first gay marriages on Monday night.

“I had to work on the budget,” he said. "Just my luck -- the hearings started this week. So I was multi-tasking. I call it a reality check.”

At Charter School, Higher Teacher Pay

      By ELISSA GOOTMAN
Would six-figure salaries attract better teachers?

A New York City charter school set to open in 2009 in Washington Heights will test one of the most fundamental questions in education: Whether significantly higher pay for teachers is the key to improving schools.

The school, which will run from fifth to eighth grades, is promising to pay teachers $125,000, plus a potential bonus based on schoolwide performance. That is nearly twice as much as the average New York City public school teacher earns, roughly two and a half times the national average teacher salary and higher than the base salary of all but the most senior teachers in the most generous districts nationwide.

The school’s creator and first principal, Zeke M. Vanderhoek, contends that high salaries will lure the best teachers. He says he wants to put into practice the conclusion reached by a growing body of research: that teacher quality — not star principals, laptop computers or abundant electives — is the crucial ingredient for success.
