David Byrne's survival strategies for emerging artists — and megastars
What is called the music business today, however, is not the business of producing music. At some point it became the business of selling CDs in plastic cases, and that business will soon be over. But that's not bad news for music, and it's certainly not bad news for musicians. Indeed, with all the ways to reach an audience, there have never been more opportunities for artists. War against web tops music industry 'F-UP' list
The talent scout who turned down the Beatles has long been credited with committing the music industry's biggest gaffe.
But Dick Rowe's billion-dollar boo-boo has been beaten to the top spot on Blender magazine's list of the "20 biggest record company screw-ups of all time" by the failure of record companies to capitalize on the Internet.
The major labels took top dishonors for driving file-sharing service Napster out of business in 2001, instead of figuring out a way to make money from its tens of millions of users. The downloaders merely scattered to hundreds of other sites, and the industry has been in a tailspin ever since. An independent record label based in Miami is claiming that it has unheard, live recordings from the Beatles' 1962 gig at Hamburg's Star Club.

The Major Label Tale: The Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers
When a musician is signed to one of the major music labels it is generally believed to be the path to riches and fame. Although it is a healthy start, the majority of music acts signed for "the big bucks" quickly learn the unforgiving and unfortunate nature of the major music business. Meet the Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers, who came out of obscurity to land a major music deal with Record label heavyweight Atlantic Records, only to realize everything was not all they thought it would be. Heavily Sensored JXL video
Junkie XL was the first ever DJ/artist that was greenlighted to use original Elvis samples. "A little less conversation" was such a hugh hit, Junkie XL got world wide management.
His new Single "F' more" is a total contrast to the Elvis song, and when fellow DJ/VJ gerald van der Kaap created the video for it, Junkie XL found record labels in Canada and the US putting up big sensors. The US label had already changed Junkie's name to JXL, now they heavily sensored his new video.
Long live the big corporation.....
The director found some creative ways to work with these sensors, and keep the original shots in the video.
The video is only available on the directors youtube page.
Check it out, decide for your self...

MMMM Pringles...oh wait they are talking about music. MMM Ringles!!! "As the recording industry wakes up from its summer slumber and starts thinking about what will motivate the consumer for the holiday selling season, the major labels are getting ready to launch the "ringle," which combines the mostly defunct single format with ringtones. Each ringle is expected to contain three songs -- one hit and maybe one remix and an older track -- and one ringtone, on a CD with a slip-sleeve cover. The idea is that if consumers in the digital age can download any tracks they want individually, why not let them buy singles in the store as well? It also enables stores to get involved in the ringtone phenomenon." MMMM Pringles...oh wait they are talking about music. MMM Ringles!!!
