    • 3 "ruptures" for 1 marriage; Spanish Family in meltdown

MADRID, September 9, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Following years of pro-abortion and anti-family policies accompanied by a plummeting birth rate, Spanish society has reached a new milestone: for every four marriages contracted, there are now three "ruptures" - most of them divorces.

"Family rupture is growing at an alarming rate," said Eduardo Hertfelder of the Family Policy Institute, which presented the information to the public.

"Family rupture has now reached very worrisome levels at the national level with a rate of .69, that is, for every four marriages celebrated, three are broken."

The statistics have emerged in the wake of Spain's "express divorce" law, which has facilitated the dissolution of marriages.

Today, according to the statistics offered by the Family Policy Institute, Spain is only equaled by Belgium in its rate of family rupture.

Spanish families are not only falling apart, they are also shrinking dramatically. As of 2006, families were having an average of 1.28 children per family, well below the replacement rate of 2.1.

    • BARACK OBAMA'S PASTOR IN SEX SCANDAL

He almost wrecked Barack Obama's presidential dreams, and now firebrand pastor Jeremiah Wright has helped destroy a Dallas church worker's marriage - and her job, The Post has learned.

Elizabeth Payne, 37, said she had a steamy sexual affair with the controversial, racially divisive man of the cloth while she was an executive assistant at a church headed by a popular Wright protégé.

When word of the unholy alliance got out, Payne's husband dumped her, and she was canned from the plum job at Friendship-West Baptist Church, she told The Post.

"I was involved with Rev. Wright, and that's why I lost my job and why my husband divorced me," Payne said.

She refused to reveal when the adulterous affair started or how she met Wright.

But fellow churchgoers at Friendship-West "found out about the affair in the spring," Payne said.

At the time, she was secretary to the Rev. Frederick Haynes III, a longtime Wright disciple.

In April, Payne organized a series of Texas public appearances by Wright, 67. Weeks before, Obama had disavowed his preacher of 20 years after Wright's anti-government rants came to light.

"Liz was by Rev. Wright's side day and night during those days," a church source said.

"It's all true," said Payne, adding that she has filed a wrongful-dismissal claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to get her job back.

In an ironic twist, Wright last night spoke at an East Orange, NJ, church revival on the subject of "unexpected problems."

"There's no such thing as a problem-free relationship," he told a packed Elmwood United Presbyterian Church. "In life, you'll have unexpected problems."

He punctuated his 45-minute sermon with evocative 1960s hits, including the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go," Frankie Beverley's "Joy and Pain," and the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." He's set to speak there again tonight.

Payne's husband, Fred Payne, 64, said he learned of the affair in late February, when he discovered e-mails between his wife and Wright.

"There must have been about 80 of them, back and forth," he said. "Wright said things like he was going to leave his wife for Elizabeth."

Wright has been married to his second wife, Ramah, for more than 20 years.

The preacher reportedly wooed Ramah away from her first husband in the 1980s, when the couple came to marriage counseling at Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

After discovering he had been cuckolded, Fred Payne, who had married Elizabeth in October 2006, headed straight for divorce court.

"I was downright mad about this bull- - - -," said Fred, who said he is "in the oil and gas business," belongs to a hunting club and makes his own bullets in his garage.

"People wouldn't be happy to know that my wife was sleeping with a black man."

He added, "Rev. Haynes doesn't like the interracial thing, either. This was quite an issue for him."

Elizabeth Payne said she has been banished by Haynes and the flock at Friendship-West.

"I'm not a member of the congregation anymore; I'm not even allowed on the premises," she said.

Wright became an embarrassment for Obama after videos of the preacher's old sermons emerged.

In them, Wright blamed the United States for the 9/11 attacks and boomed, "God damn America!"

    • Liberals want to jail parents who sabotage visits

The Liberal Party, Venstre wants divorced parents who sabotage contact with the other parent, to face jail if other sanctions fail.

"Today's measures are not sufficient," says Venstre's spokeswoman on children's affairs, Trine Skei-Grande to daily newspaper Dagsavisen.

Existing rules are limited to giving fines to parents who block visits from their former partners. Venstre want police to be able to issue fines and detain parents who break legally binding agreements governing visitation.

The lobby group which promotes the rights of single parents Aleneforeldreforeningen disagrees.

"In most cases, those who block their former partner's visiting rights, do so for a reason and they have a duty to act in the child's best interests. Very few people do so for egotistical reasons, and Venstre should remember this," says Aleneforeldreforening spokesman, Stig Rusten.

Skei-Grande admits that this is a problem which only affects a small group, but she emphasizes that this doesn’t make the issue any less important.

"Parents can be very manipulative and hate against the former partner can be so intense that children are used in the conflict," says Skei-Grande.

Venstre gets support from the lobby group which has traditionally voiced the interest of non-custodial parents, Foreningen 2 Foreldre (F2F).

"I think it’s an excellent suggestion," says F2F leader Roger Sollied Johansen.

    • Iranian Activists Block 'Discriminatory' Bill

A new proposed Family Protection Bill has been returned to the judiciary commission of the Iranian parliament as a result of backlash against the bill's most discriminatory provisions. The bill was on the verge of consideration by the full parliament, and if ratified would further erode women's rights in Iran.

Iran's current Civil Code [pdf] is highly discriminatory, restricting women's custody rights and ability to divorce, lowering the minimum age of marriage for females, requiring the husband's permission for the wife to work outside of the home, and legalizing temporary marriages. The new proposed Family Protection Bill marks further regression. Among the most controversial provisions of the proposed bill:

      *

Article 22 effectively removes any requirement to register temporary marriages (sigheh), which are viewed in Iran as a form of legalized prostitution. The removal of the registration requirement eliminates any financial or legal protections for women in these unions, and for children who are born into temporary marriages.
      *

Article 23 authorizes polygamous marriages contingent upon the financial capacity of the man. It does not set specific parameters for adequate financial resources to support multiple wives, or define overall concepts of justice or equal treatment of multiple wives. Most notably absent from the Family Protection Bill is any effective requirement of consent of the first wife for her husband to enter into a second marriage.
      *

Article 25 imposes a tax on the Mehr (dowry) paid to the wife. While this amount is legally owed to the wife at the time of the marriage, women often do not receive their dowries. Frequently it is only paid upon termination of the marriage, thus becoming a point of leverage for a husband against his wife if she desires a divorce. Taxation of the dowry reinforces a husband's financial power over his wife during marriage, and further inhibits a wife's potential for financial autonomy at the time of a divorce.
      *

The Family Protection Bill imposes additional procedural impediments to divorce, particularly for women, who under the current Civil Code already have only limited access to divorce.
      *

Article 46 criminalizes the marriage of a foreigner to an Iranian woman without proper authorization. The foreign man is subject to between ninety days and one year imprisonment, and the woman (if married at her free will), her father (if he gave permission), and the marriage officiant will be sentenced as accomplices.

First introduced in August 2007, the proposed Family Protection Bill was passed by the legal and judicial commission of the parliament on July 9, 2008. Intense opposition by numerous groups, including activists in the One Million Signatures Campaign, was instrumental in preventing the bill's ratification by parliament in its current form.

WLP commends the efforts of women's rights activists and the One Million Signatures campaign, and urges continued awareness and advocacy in ensuring legal protections of women's rights both outside and within the family.

    • Falling house prices are saving marriages

Property group Savills says there is a strong correlation between changes in house prices and the number of divorces in England and Wales as falling prices makes divorce less affordable. They seem to have a point as the Office of National Statistics reports that the divorce rate in England and Wales is at a 26-year low, with 11.9 divorcing people for every 1,000 of the married population.

Nowadays, couples are more likely to divorce at a higher age, so that there is more equity involved in the split. "The seven year itch is becoming the 20 to 25 year itch," said Lucian Cook, director of research at Savills. "They are couples who have climbed the housing ladder and, having generated significant equity, divide it between them when they separate." As a result, they could be more likely to stall on divorcing and selling up, or could be waiting for prices to fall further before buying smaller properties separately.

But other surveys suggest that the economic downturn could affect marriages among those working in the City. A poll commissioned by law firm Mishcon de Reya earlier this year suggested that a fifth of stockbrokers, hedge fund managers and analysts knew a colleague who had been issued with divorce proceedings since the downturn began.

A child, who is just preparing for a new term at primary school in Saudi Arabia, is the focus of a court hearing to decide whether she can get DIVORCED.

The 8-year-old girl from Unayzah was married off in secret (she does not know she is married) to a much older man by her father. Surprisingly it was the girl's own mother who filed for divorce, however her daughter's husband insists that he has done nothing wrong, and under Sharia law, he probably hasn't.

Saudi Arabia has one of the highest child-marriage rates on the Arabian peninsula, however they are also routine in many parts of Africa and South-East Asia.

Phil Collins has agreed to pay £25 million to his third wife in Britain's biggest ever celebrity divorce settlement. The payout tops the £24.3 million that was awarded to Heather Mills in her acrimonious split with Sir Paul McCartney and the £12.5 million paid by Chris Tarrant to his ex wife Ingrid.

Collins, 57, and his Swiss wife Orianne Cevey, 35, ended their marriage after seven years. The couple, who have been together for 12 years, have two children, Nicolas, eight, and Matthew, four. The costly settlement is not the first for Collins, who gave his second wife Jill Tavelman £17 million after he finished their relationship by fax in 1994.

    • Man Returns From The Dead...Wife Still Leaves Him

"Miracle" man Joshua Mahabir might have had a second chance at life, but he will not be getting a second chance with his wife.

Mahabir, who said he was declared dead at hospital but came back to life on the way to the mortuary, said he wanted to make up with the wife who left him.

It was the breakup, he said, that led him to drink from a bottle of weedicide last month, the poison sending him to the San Fernando General Hospital where he said his miracle happened.

Said she left for good on July 25.

The following day, her husband said he drank from a bottle of gramoxone and ended up at hospital. A day later, Mahabir said he was moved to the hospital's Accident and Emergency Ward to have his stomach pumped, but woke up to find himself wrapped in a sheet inside a body-bag on a trolley between two dead people on the way to the mortuary. He claimed that he was returned to the A&E, treated, handed an apology and was well enough to leave the hospital two days later.

On the morning he "died" his wife said she was at the Siparia Magistrates' Court, where she had applied for a protection order against him.

"Just before I walked into court, I got a telephone, I got a call that he had died. I just broke down. I was crying when I told the magistrate and police".

Penal police officers said they too received a report of his death.

Debbie Mahabir said she went ahead and obtained the protection order.

Her husband yesterday maintained that he came back from the dead and repeated that he did not blame the hospital for any mistakes.

    • Mexican Divorce

I was travelling in Mexico with my then wife. Like many young hands, we were in a VW van equipped with a potty to provide for our fussy American preference for sanitation and privacy.

My wife and I had been quibbling all day, due to the stifling heat and humidity of the sea level jungle in which we had been camping. We took the road toward Mexico City, hoping that higher elevation would gain us some relief from the tropical heat.

On a switchback road several thousand feet above sea level, my dear wife announced the need to use the convenience, and lurched toward the rear of the van. I suggested that she wait until I could pull over, but she was resolute in her determination to attend to matters promptly.

From the back, I heard her irritable voice say, "Why's this sodding potty rocking?" I pondered, and realized that the potty was under pressure! It had been last used at sea level, and we had gained significant elevation. The bottom of the potty was bowed with pressure, causing the rocking. And, to my good wife's impending grief and mortification, the potty was nearly full.

A beat too late, I called back, "Honey don't flush..."

I was interrupted by a mighty "WHOOSH" and a slurpy noise. Then silence. Then a horrible stench, and the unhappy sounds of my dear bride cursing like a Liverpool longshoreman. In the rear view mirror, I saw that the interior of the van was dripping with brown fluid. Since she had to face the potty to flush it, and since she hadn't put the lid down, my hapless wife had taken the full blast from the pressurized holding tank. She looked like Al Jolson in blackface.

Convulsed with laughter which was the proximate cause of our subsequent marital decline, I pulled over. My soon-to-be-ex lady marched down the highway cursing and dripping. When I recovered my composure, I cleaned the van and picked up my luckless hitch-hiking wife. Our conversation was limited over the next few days, and never regained it's former gaiety and charm.

That pressurized potty took us out of the gene pool.
