Britain to phase out traditional lightbulbs by 2010
The British Government plans to carry out a bright idea of the next two years. To phase out traditional lightbulbs.
They hope to stop selling 100 watt bulbs by January 2009, and 40 watt bulbs by 2010.
Tony Blair signed up to EU plans that signaled death across Europe for traditional style bulbs earlier this year.
Britain hopes to phase out the traditional bulb in favor of CFLs as quickly and as smoothly as possible.
If every British household replaced three 60 or 100 watt light bulbs with CFLs, the energy savings would be greater than the power used by the country's entire street lighting network.
How is that for motivation? The British Government plans to carry out a bright idea of the next two years. To phase out traditional lightbulbs. ... more -

Lighting with mercury
Up to 5 milligrams of mercury, a hazardous trace metal, is included in the manufacture of fluorescent lamps. While the latest fluorescent fever is good news for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, any significant adoption would introduce hundreds of millions of new mercury-laced bulbs into the environment, even though it would decrease the total number of lamps being thrown away. According to the California Product Stewardship Council, local governments have neither the capacity nor the resources to manage this waste stream, making independent take-back and recycling programs critical. Up to 5 milligrams of mercury, a hazardous trace metal, is included in the manufacture of fluorescent lamps. While the latest fluoresc... more

Government Issues Health Warnings Over Energy-Saving Bulbs
Advice issued by ministers and health experts yesterday warned consumers to evacuate the room for 15 minutes if an energy-saving bulb smashed or cracked. This is due to the high mercury content of the devices, which health experts also warn could trigger eczema and allergic reactions.
The Daily Mail reports today: 'The Department for Environment warned shards of glass from broken bulbs should not be vacuumed up but instead swept away by someone wearing rubber gloves to protect them from the bulb's mercury content. In addition, it said care should be taken not to inhale any dust and the broken pieces should be put in a sealed plastic bag for disposal at a council dump ? not a normal household bin'.
