US soldier gets 15 months in prison for desertion
A soldier who fled to Canada rather than fight in Iraq has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after pleading guilty in Fort Carson, Colo., to a reduced charge of desertion.
Pvt. Robin Long told a military judge at his sentencing Friday that he left the country over moral objections to what he called an illegal war.
Prosecutors say the 25-year-old from Boise, abandoned his duty and his country.
Long was stationed at Fort Carson when he fled to Canada in 2005. Canadian authorities denied his request for refuge and deported him last month.
Long reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to desertion with intent to remain away permanently, a lesser charge than desertion with intent to shirk hazardous duty. Pyramid City
Incredible engineering plans from Timelinks, a Dubai-based 'environmental design company', with plans for an enormous, sustainably-run city-in-a-pyramid.
Timelinks is to unveil their vision of a 'city of the future' at the upcoming Cityscape Dubai. The city – called the Ziggurat project – will be in the shape of a futuristic pyramid which, according to Timelinks, could support an entire community of up to one million people by harnessing the power of nature.
Ridas Matonis, Managing Director of Timelinks, said: “Ziggurat communities can be almost totally self-sufficient energy-wise. Apart from using steam power in the building we will also employ wind turbine technology to harness natural energy resources.”
But it is not just about reducing the carbon footprint. The 2.3 km² pyramid has many other benefits. “Whole cities can be accommodated in complexes which take up less than 10% of the original land surface. Public and private landscaping will be used for leisure pursuits or irrigated as agricultural land. Stone Age graveyard shows Sahara was once green
A Stone Age graveyard on the shores of an ancient, dried-up lake in the Sahara is brimming with the skeletons of people, fish and crocodiles who thrived when the African desert was briefly green, researchers reported on Thursday.
The 10,000-year-old site in Niger, called Gobero after the Tuareg name for the area, was discovered in 2000 but the group has only now gathered enough information to make a full report, said University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno.
The team stumbled onto the assortment of human and animal bones and artifacts while looking for dinosaur fossils.
"I realized we were in the green Sahara," Sereno, who discovered the site while working for National Geographic, said in a statement.
The site contains at least 200 graves that appear to have been left by two separate settlements 1,000 years apart.
Perhaps the most dramatic is a woman and two children, their arms entwined, laid to rest on a bed of flowers around 5,000 years ago.
The older group were tall, robust hunter-gathers known as Kiffians who apparently abandoned the area during a long drought that dried up the lake around 8,000 years ago, Sereno's team reports in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE.
A second group settled in the area between 7,000 and 4,500 years ago, they said. These were Tenerians, smaller, shorter people who hunted, herded and fished.
Both left many artifacts, including tool kits, fishhooks, ceramics and jewelry, the researchers said.
"At first glance, it's hard to imagine two more biologically distinct groups of people burying their dead in the same place," said Chris Stojanowski, a bioarchaeologist from Arizona State University who has been working on the site.
The Sahara is the world's largest desert and has been for tens of thousands of years, but changes in the Earth's orbit 12,000 years ago brought monsoons further north for a while.
The team sampled tooth enamel from the skeletons, pollen, bones and examined soil and tools to date the site, artifacts and remains.
"The data from Gobero, when combined with existing sites in North Africa, indicate we are just beginning to understand the complex history of biosocial evolution in the face of severe climate fluctuation in the Sahara," the researchers wrote in their report. African Americans are deserting San Francisco
African Americans are leaving San Francisco because of substandard schools, a lack of affordable housing and the dearth of jobs and black culture, according to a report by a committee looking into the exodus.
San Francisco's black population has dropped faster than that of any other large U.S. city's. It went from 13.4 percent in 1970 to an estimated 6.5 percent in 2005, according to the census. Nationally, African Americans make up 12.1 percent of the population.
Much of the blame has been placed on the Redevelopment Agency, which intentionally drove black families and businesses from the Fillmore district in the 1960s and 1970s. African Americans are leaving San Francisco because of substandard schools, a lack of affordable housing and the dearth of jobs and bl... more -

Music Video: Freddie Horstman's "Give It To Me Baby"
I shot this video with Freddie way out in the desert surrounding Joshua Tree. We found this abandoned shack next to some joshua trees just before dawn and shot the whole video in about three hours.
It was produced by Jon McAllister and shot by Ray Huang, I directed and edited the piece.
The hard part was we didn't have a boom box to do playback on set. Freddie sang the song a thousand differant ways and it was an editing miracle that we got close to sync on it. It's going to 'purple rain' in the desert; Prince joins Coachella
What's the best way to give a big, last-minute boost to ticket sales for this year's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival? In a word: Prince.
In a move that may suggest that co-headliners Portishead and Kraftwerk weren't drawing well enough for their April 26 slots at Coachella, Prince has been added to top that night's lineup.
This will mark the Purple Wonder's first performance at Coachella, which takes place April 25-27 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio. His addition should send the festival's charisma quotient soaring high above the desert sky, especially since he rarely performs at festivals in this country. And as his show-stealing half-time show at last year's Super Bowl attested, almost no one Prince rises to the occasion like Prince. What's the best way to give a big, last-minute boost to ticket sales for this year's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festi... more -
