German site sued by Facebook
The German company sued by Facebook for running a "knockoff" of the social networking Web site said on Sunday it asked a German court to declare that Facebook's claims are without merit.
Facebook's complaint, filed on Friday in a California federal court, accuses studiVZ of copying the look, feel, features and services of Facebook and seeks "to end StudiVZ's illegal activity" lest Facebook's own reputation be harmed by association.
"As with any counterfeit product, StudiVZ's uncontrolled quality standards for service, features and privacy negatively impact the genuine article," Facebook stated in the complaint.
StudiVZ filed for declaratory judgment at the District Court in Stuttgart, also on Friday.
Facebook's suit also seeks compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial.
StudiVZ claims Facebook is suing them only because Facebook has failed to transplant its success in the United States and other countries to the German market.
"Their strategy appears to be: 'If you can't beat them, sue them,"' said Marcus Riecke, chief executive of studiVZ, which is owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, a German publishing company.

Bloom: Smart choices for the carbon conscious
This is a really cool website I thought a lot of you guys would be interested in. It's done by the BBC. Basically, you register (for free) and join a community of people who are making environmentally conscious choices. You browse a variety of action "seeds" that have information about them- if you choose to "plant" one, they get put in your "garden" as a "flower"- so you end up with a garden full of really cool flowers (the graphic design is sweet) that all represent what actions you are doing.
Check it out, tell me what you think! This is a really cool website I thought a lot of you guys would be interested in. It's done by the BBC. Basically, you register (for f... more -
Crowdsourced Tagging tool for Photo Search
It’s not much good having a vast collection of photos if you can’t organize and search through them in an intuitive way, but tagging capabilities have so far proven beyond the scope of most photo sharing websites. And while digital photography makes it very easy to shoot thousands of images, most digital photographers lack the time and patience to tag those individual photos. Tagcow aims to provide a convenient solution by automatically tagging users’ photos with descriptive keywords that can later be used to find them. Tapping into the power of crowdsourced labour, Tagcow uses Amazon.com’s Mechanical Turk to tag photos, applying a combination of human taggers and computer technology. Photos are typically tagged within 24 to 48 hours of submission.
With prices starting at USD 9.95 for 250 photos, Tagcow lets users upload their digital photos to the site, which runs them through its “tag factory” to add descriptive tags. The photos and tags are then published to the user’s Tagcow site, where they may be searched for based on descriptive attributes. Typing the word “soccer,” for instance, might return every picture from a child’s days on the field. Tagcow can also tag people, with the appropriate training, allowing users to sort their photos by the people included therein. In addition, Tagcow integrates with Flickr, letting users tag their Flickr photos through the Tagcow site without uploading them separately. It’s not much good having a vast collection of photos if you can’t organize and search through them in an intuitive way, but tagging c... more -
Kid-proof your PC with SteadyState
When you’ve got your Windows XP or Vista setup running perfectly, you don’t want to lose all your painstaking customizations to a reckless tot, an experiment-minded friend or spouse, or a rogue system-lousing program. Windows SteadyState, as we mentioned earlier this week, helps you to create a kind of virtual rubber room those types can play around in and not really harm anything. SteadyState can also restrict web site access for innocent eyes, set timer limits on user access, and get better control of those other folks who use your computer—in other words, SteadyState makes you the Grand Master Sysadmin of your single-unit empire. Let’s take a look at setting up SteadyState and get familiar with a few of its key features.
Take Microsoft’s advice and do a little groundwork before installing and setting up SteadyState. Download the latest updates for your system from Windows Update, set a password for the main user, or “Administrator,” account if there isn’t one already, and make sure that other users only have access to the programs you want them to. To see if that’s the case, create a new user account (Control Panel->User Accounts->Create a new account) or log into an account other than your own if you’re already sharing a system. Peek into the Start menu, look around on the desktop, and if they’ve got access to stuff you don’t want them playing around with, regardless of any protections, head back to your account and uninstall the program. Some programs give you an option to install them for “Just this user,” so try re-installing the app with that option if possible.
Getting started
If you haven’t already done so, download your copy of SteadyState. You’ll likely be prompted to install or run a Windows Genuine Advantage tool or plug-in before downloading; go ahead and do so, install the program, then launch it from the Start menu. Close down the help window that pops up, and you’re at SteadyState’s main launcher:
From here you decide how you want to protect your system. Are you creating a long-term, super-locked-down account for adventurous young minds or accident-prone users? Are you trying out an app or system change that might throw everything into calamity? Let’s look at your options.
If your potential system-messers are going to be around for awhile, you’ll want to hit “Add New Account” in the lower right-hand corner, or choose one already there. Give them a name (or just “Shared” if you want everyone to use the same locked-down, guest-type account), password, and icon. If you’ve set up separate hard drives or partitions on your system, you could also have that user’s profile placed on one of them for easier portability (and fixing), but you’ll likely just be hitting “Next.” You’ll arrive at the main account dashboard. Here’s a few items you’ll want to look into:
* general.png“General” tab: The use timers are pretty helpful for parents who want to limit their young ones’ monitor-zoning, but the real power-tweak here is the “Lock profile” button, which makes the account something like a public terminal—nothing a user changes in their user profile is saved once they log off.
* windows_restrictions.pngWindows restrictions: Now we’re getting to the serious stuff. There’s a lot of buttons to toggle and explore, but the general High->Medium->Low category selectors are pretty good guidelines for getting started. In most cases, you’ll want to block off access to the Registry editor, Task Manager, Control Panel, and (these are important) prevent them from locking the computer or changing their passwords. You can also block off access to specific drives from this screen. When you’ve got your Windows XP or Vista setup running perfectly, you don’t want to lose all your painstaking customizations to a reck... more -
Let the Little Ones Enjoy your Computer. BabySmash Time
For those of you that follow my Ask The Admin you’ll already know that the wife and I had a baby about 7 months ago. I love it when my daughter tries to use the computer. It doesn’t matter if she is loving the touch pad, hitting the keyboard, eating the mouse, staring at the screen in delight, or just ecstatic to see a reaction to what she just did.
Now between me, you and the millions of readers out there, in Internet Land, I don’t think there is anything I enjoy as much as my daughter smiling, laughing or squealing in delight!
I found an application that allows me to let Kayla mash away at my laptop and get a direct reaction for each key press. Enter [hulksmash] BabySmash!
No this is not a new campaign against children by The Hulk! Nor is it something that is meant to smash babies. This Windows Application is meant to let babies smash at your machine.
Some people look at me like I’m crazy and say:
“She is going to break that you know!”
And I respond…
“Sort of like when you spilled your soda on your keyboard or how about when you accidentally cracked your keyboard into two pieces.”
Computers today are meant to take a little abuse and if you think someone that weighs 14 pounds can break a computer think about that the next time you throw your heavy purse on the keyboard and call me because your machine is beeping. But as usual I digress. Back to our application. For those of you that follow my Ask The Admin you’ll already know that the wife and I had a baby about 7 months ago. I love it when my... more -

Move over .com and make way for .sex, .me, .whateveryouwant!
An internet overhaul has won approval by Icann, the organization in charge of regulating internet domain names. They voted unanimously to relax the rules on 'top-level' domain names like .com or .uk.
This means companies could use their brands as web addresses, or you could use your own name!
"We are opening up a new world and I think this cannot be underestimated," said Roberto Gaetano, a member of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann).

Google Trends now works for Web sites too
Google Trends, a service Google started two years ago to track searched-for keywords, has unveiled a new tool for inquiring minds looking to find out more on any given site. Like tracking services Compete and Alexa which use tool bars to grab user data, Google Trends now lets you pop in specific domains and compare basic traffic information about any .com site (or .tv, .biz, .net, and so on) using nothing more than organic user searches.
Included are daily traffic numbers in users (sent from Google search), where in the world the users are coming from, and related sites that were either searched for or visited in that same session. All of this information is color coded, and up to five sites at a time can be pitted head-to-head, with bar graphs and charts for each.

A mission update posted Friday was replaced with a hacker's signature and a link redirecting visitors to an overseas Web site.
The site hosted by the University of Arizona has been taken off line while computer experts work to correct the problem.

10 weird things that sell well on eBay that you would normally throw away
"I have found that people buy the strangest things. Things that I would normally think about throwing out, however since doing some research on eBay, I have now started listing these items on eBay and people buy them!
1. Carrier bags
Yes the humble carrier bag is always in demand on eBay. It is usually the designer carrier bags, or the study kind of women's clothes store bags with the rope style handles that do well, and any kind of unusual looking bags as people collect these.
2. Empty perfume bottles
Empty perfume bottles are good sellers on eBay for two reasons. If you take some refillable perfume bottles (for example Angel perfume) back to a stockist, you can often get the bottle refilled with the perfume for less than it costs to buy a brand new bottle. Also, people collect perfume bottles, especially designer names, unusual shape bottles, miniatures and limited edition bottles.
3. Empty ink cartridges
These sell well on eBay as people buy them and refill them which is much more environmentally friendly than buying new ones all the time.
4. Theme park guides
Some people like to collect these kind of things, especially if it is somewhere they have visited for example and have lost or damaged their original one.
5. Craft items
Craft items can range from cardboard toilet rolls, pieces of shiny paper, bits of ribbon from chocolate boxes, buttons etc. Anything like this which is usually discarded can be stored and when you have a reasonable amount of mixed items, list it on eBay as craft items and your pieces of junk could be someone else's treasure, just what they need to start or finish their next craft project.
6. Coupons and vouchers
If you have any sort of coupons or vouchers for particular brands or stores and you are not going to use them, put them on eBay because somebody will want them. Say, for example you have £10 off for a particular store that you got for free through the post. Put it on eBay, and if you get, for example £7 for it, you have made £7 and the winning bidder has then earned £3 off his or her favourite store. You both win!
7. Old postcards
It doesn't matter if they are old, or have writing on the back of them, there are many people who collect postcards of all kinds of things, funny ones, landmarks, scenery, animals. Put together a bundle and get them listed on eBay.
8. Old concert tickets and programmes
Fans and collectors will pay money for your old ticket stubs and programmes from concerts and gigs.
9. Broken electrical items
If you have an electrical item, camera, hand held game machine or anything along those lines that is broken and you think it is beyond repair, don't throw it away. As long as you state clearly in your listing that the item is broken you can list it on eBay, and people always buy these sort of things. There is usually someone that knows how to fix them, or are just looking for working parts out of them to fix their own.
10. Old mobile phones
Again, like the electrical items, it doesn't matter if they are working or not, as long as you state if they are faulty or broken in the listing. These sell well for the parts".
