    • Did Phelps really win?

On August 15th a corporately-owned athlete by the name of Michael Phelps participated in a 100-meter Butterfly finals race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was heavy favorite to win this race, despite losing the same race in qualifying session against someone who is, in an ignorant world we live in today, commonly refered to as 'some guy', but who in the world of competitive swimming is actually the 'big fish' Milorad Cavic. The world's media attention turned toward Phelps expecting him to tie Mark Spitz' 36-year-old record. The world's biggest stage was set. The show had to go on.

As it turned out, Michael Phelps did not start this race as expected. At the 50-meter mark he was only 7th out of 8th participants. Milorad Cavic led the race from start to finish, including at the 50-meter mark. Toward the end of the race, it appeared that Phelps closed on Cavic's lead, but still could not manage to beat him. The eyes of all the spectators in the aquatic center in Beijing, as well as those millions around the world, clearly saw that Milorad Cavic has won the race. Televised replays from all the different angles, including the one from underwater cameras, clearly showed that Cavic was the fist one to touch the wall. Television replays also showed Michael Phelps' coach Bob Bowman disappointedly muttering: "He's got him." (meaning that Cavic beat Phelps). Phelps' own mother sitting in the audience in all her confusion raised two fingers in the air as if accepting that her son came in second. Even Phelps himself, in the fist couple of seconds after the finish, appeared to be subdued knowing/believing that he lost the race.

    • Japanese swimmer collapses at Water Cube pool

A member of Japan’s synchronized swimming team had to be helped out of the pool during Saturday’s final after she apparently fainted.

Hiromi Kobayashi, a 23-year-old from Osaka competing in her first Olympics, was taken off the deck on a stretcher after hyperventilating as the routine ended.

Two men in swimsuits jumped into the pool to assist the team, which was helping Kobayashi to the side. The other team members climbed out to await their scores, while the ailing woman clung to the pool’s edge.

Kobayashi was lifted out by the two men in swimsuits and she buckled to her knees. Her body and head went limp as they carried her. She was wrapped in a white sheet and rushed away on the stretcher, attended to by several volunteers and medical personnel.

The woman hyperventilated because of stress, said Hiroshi Takeuchi, press officer for the Japanese team.

“That kind of thing has happened to her before. She is a very nervous athlete,” he said. “She is good. Don’t worry, she’s not in serious condition.”

Kobayashi was conscious and resting at the arena, and did not require a hospital visit, he said.

    • British swimmer wins 10km silver, throws bottle of water over Chinese official

British swimmer David Davies collapsed with exhaustion today after winning silver in the gruelling 10km open water marathon - despite going off course in the race.

Davies had to be put onto a stretcher as soon as he emerged from the water at the Shunyi Rowing Park but made a speedy recovery before rowing with an official.

The Welshman, 23, reacted with fury when a Chinese woman man-handled him as he was talking to the press and threw a bottle of water over her.

I am incredibly ashamed of the fact that I have a fully functional body and don't partake in any physical activity and I will definitely be taking up some sort of sporting activity, partially because of her.

    • A Rare Moment of Celebration in Zimbabwe

BEIJING – Olympic swimmer Kirsty Coventry flies home to Zimbabwe each December from her training base in Austin, Texas.
She does because she likes to visit her family over the Christmas holiday, and because it's summer in the southern hemisphere. And because what few remaining pools in Zimbabwe that actually have water and aren't covered in green algae are no longer heated.

Coventry braves the sometimes frigid water as much as she can when she goes home. Her coach writes up supplemental dry-land workouts and prays it's enough so that her training regimen isn't set back irreparably.
“I wasn't super excited that she was going home,” says Kim Brackin, who recruited her from Zimbabwe to Auburn in 2000. “But I also know at her age you need to have a happy athlete. And that makes her happy. We went to the Opening Ceremony, and everyone was like, 'Why are you going to Opening Ceremony? You have to swim the next day.'

“But that's Kirsty. She just wanted the experience of walking with her country.”

Hers is a country rapidly descending into the realm of the absurd.

The longtime president, Robert Mugabe, has been accused of fixing the most recent election through intimidation and violence.

Inflation is hovering around 2 million percent, if you listen to official government figures, and several times that on the black market – forcing people to pay for a loaf of bread with backpacks full of bills that quite literally aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Unemployment is pushing 80 percent. The average life expectancy, according to the CIA World Factbook, is 39.73 years.

But Coventry swims on, and tiny Zimbabwe is 18th in the medal count at the Beijing Olympics.

Zimbabwe has a gold and three silvers.

Coventry has a gold and three silvers.

“Right now,” Brackin says, “I'm sure people are doing some serious celebrating in Zimbabwe, as they should be.”

Michael Phelps won five individual events en route to his record eight gold medals. Coventry nearly won four, finishing second in the 100-meter backstroke, 200 individual medley and 400 IM by a combined .82 seconds. She finally claimed a gold in the 200 backstroke yesterday, and now is responsible for seven of Zimbabwe's eight all-time Olympic medals.

“Part of the reason I'm still swimming and still motivated is to raise my country's flag high and shine some good, positive light on my country at home,” says Coventry, who refuses to comment publicly on Zimbabwe's divisive political crisis. “I don't know how many athletes have their whole country supporting them. Every time I go home, I have people in the street cheering me.”

Or parents naming newborn sons and daughters after her. Shortly after the Athens Olympics, there was a Swimmingpool Nhanga born in Harare, a Freestyle Zuze, a Breaststroke Musendame, a Butterfly Masocha, a Backstroke Banda.

Her grand return to Harare was televised on live TV for two hours. Mugabe presented her with the equivalent of $50,000 U.S. as “pocket money.”

That Coventry is a white girl from a Harare suburb who went to college in the United States and still lives there doesn't seem to matter to the 12 million residents of Zimbabwe, all but a few thousand of whom are black and poor. They consider her one of their own, a lifeline to the rest of the world, a beacon of hope in an ever-darkening existence.

“Sometimes it's more pressure,” Brackin says. “She's expected to bring joy.”

    • Phelps Gets Record Eighth Gold as Americans Win 4×100m Medley

A quest that began four years ago after Michael Phelps won six gold medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics ended triumphantly for him at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Sunday. Phelps earned his unprecedented eighth Olympic gold medal of the 2008 Olympics as he swam the butterfly leg of the American team's world-record win in the 4x100-meter medley relay.

Michael Phelps set world records in seven of his eight swimming events, with only the 100-meter butterfly mark not broken. He also won the 400-meter IM, the 200-meter IM and the 200-meter butterfly, breaking his own world mark in each, and led off in the 4x200-meter free relay.

This article includes a number of stunning photographs, as well as two absolutely thrilling videos (the American team's winning performance in the 4x100-meter medley relay and the concluding Olympic Gold Medal Awards Ceremony).
