60 cyclists protested in Santa Monica

(SANTA MONICA) Published by Alex Thompson
Yesterday approximately 6o cyclists protested police harassment (photos on Flickr & Ridazz) of Santa Monica Critical Mass. In response to the 14 citations of Santa Monica Critical Mass (SMCM) riders last Friday we, the Crimanimalz, blocked 4 crosswalks for a cumulative period of 40 minutes. By walking back and forth across crosswalks continuously the Crimanimalz were able to legally create massive traffic jams. We effectively showed that legal behavior can be outrageously disruptive. Further, we showed that should the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) continue targeting cyclists on Critical Mass, there will be consequences for traffic in Santa Monica on other days.
-
SMPD traffic officers clearly took the cue from their superiors. For example, while issuing over 30 tickets for “no light” violations, officers repeatedly checked the box “this is not a correctable violation.” However, every “no light” violation for a cyclist is a correctable violation in California, as the California Highway Patrol has pointed out numerous times to riders who go to pay these violation. Once a rider demonstrates that they have a corrected the violation by equipping a light, the fine drops from over $100 to just $10. By misleading cited cyclists SMPD has improved their revenue stream and cost riders thousands of dollars more than is legally justified.
-
This is Santa Monica’s reminder. If we are to be painted as disruptive, then we shall act so. If we are to be treated as insignificant, then we will show that we are not. Actions like this will continue to occur, at unpredictable times, using unpredictable means, until the Santa Monica Police Department quits ticketing Santa Monica Critical Mass.

Obama pledges funding for cycling
woot woot!
-
Obama held a private, 20-minute meeting with members of the Bikes Belong board of directors. According to BRAIN.
“I think it’s very important that we (the bicycle industry) were involved with this type of event,” Kegel said. Kegel added that he personally supports Obama and believes that Obama can help end the partisanship that divides the country.
He also told them he seldom makes promises on what he would do if elected president, but that this was a promise he would keep.
160 people reportedly turned up for the event. Among them were Bikes Belong executive director Tim Blumenthal, cycling legend Greg LeMond, the president of SRAM Stan Day, and others from both the supply and retail side of the industry.
Obama’s promise to fund cycling isn’t technically groundbreaking. In the last Transportation Bill (passed in 2005), the Safe Routes to Schools program received over $600 million dollars and it’s safe to say that number will jump way up when the next bill is passed in 2009.

CHICAGO, IL (BRAIN)—Barack Obama, in a private 20-minute meeting with members of the Bikes Belong board of directors, told them if he were elected president he would increase funding for cycling and pedestrian projects. And the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee also said he would support Safe Routes to Schools programs.
He also told them he seldom makes promises on what he would do if elected president, but that this was a promise he would keep. Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong, laid out the industry’s position on boosting funding for cycling-related projects and for Safe Routes to Schools at the meeting. woot woot! - Obama held a private, 20-minute meeting with members of the Bikes Belong board of directors. Police Traffic Sting: Taraval & 16th Avenue, November 21, 2007
The SFPD conducted a sting this morning in the Inner Parkside neighborhood, nabbing drivers who failed to yield or stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
I watched with glee as the officers went after dozens (yes, dozens!) of violators. My wife and I walk our dog on these streets morning and evening, and the number of close calls, near misses and heart-in-my-throat moments are too many to count. I applaud any effort to get these irresponsible drivers to slow down to sane speeds and no longer see pedestrians as simple obstacles to get by, around or through at any costs.
In the short video you can see the pedestrian (undercover policewoman) almost get clipped by the silver sedan, only to have the first officer right on their tail. My neighbor came out to ask the next officer what was happening and proceeded to thank him for the effort, as she too has had her share of scary moments.
(BTW, you may have seen Craig Debro of KTVU's "Mornings on 2" doing a on-the-spot story from Taraval/16th this am (11/21/2007). If so, you got to see my neighbor, John, wave to the camera, and you might have heard me yelling, "De-broooo!!" over and over in the background...)
You can guess how I feel about this (yea!!!), but what about you? Do you think the police are justified in this sort of sting, or do you think it's entrapment? Time Change is a Killer
And not just for your internal clock and sleeping patterns. With the sun going down earlier that means more people walking around in the dark. According to this study, that means pedestrians are 3 times more likely to be hit by cars. So make sure you've a) set your clocks back; and b) look both ways before you cross the street.
