Hangzhou, China, The Qiantang River Tidal Bore Story - September 2008
Mike Gerard, and his company Gerard Sports Marketing (GSM), have teamed up with Chinese partner, Wabsono International--and the Chinese government--to bring the sport of surfing to the Chinese people.
Everyday--twice a day--in the City of Hangzhou (pronounced "han-joe"), a tidal bore wave rolls upstream on the Qiantang (pronounced "kwin-tang") River. And each year, in September, the wave is at its largest.
To witness this awesome sight, hundreds of thousands of Chinese people come to the annual Wave Watching Festival in Hangzhou. And this year, they're here to see surfing for the very first time.
For this trip, Mike Gerard brought the Long brothers, and Mark Healey.
The purpose of this trip was to demonstrate to the Chinese government that surfing on the river was feasible... and that the idea of broadening the annual festival to include surfing is a good one.
This year's surfing event was a huge success. In fact, the day of the festival, it was a top story on the Chinese national news channel (CCTV)--and was viewed by approximately 1/2 the entire Chinese population!
GSM and Wabsono have signed a five year exclusive rights deal with the City of Hangzhou to develop the surfing festival concept. Malia Manuel, a 14-year-old from Wailua, Kaua'i, Hawaii became the youngest rider in history to win the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington, Beach, Calif., Saturday.
Manuel defeated Coco Ho, 17, in the women's final 14.34 to 7.90.
"I'm so stoked right now," Manuel said in a story at the Association of Surfing Professionals Web site. "My sponsors gave me the wildcard into this event and I was just happy to be here. To get to surf against some of my heroes and to be in the final with my friend Coco is just something I would have never dreamed of." Bertha becomes 1st hurricane of 2008
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Bertha became the first hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season early Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
A satellite picture from 5:45 a.m. ET Monday shows Hurricane Bertha over the Atlantic.
As of 5 a.m. ET, Bertha was 845 miles (1365 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands and was moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph.
It was packing winds of 75 mph -- the minimum for hurricane status.
Additional strengthening is expected during the next couple of days, according to forecasters.
The hurricane center said it is still too early to determine whether Bertha will eventually affect any land areas.
The five-day forecast map shows Bertha passing near Bermuda, but hurricanes are unpredictable and their routes often change during a forecast period. See Bertha's predicted path »

110 chilometri di costa in festa
La Notte Rosa è la grande festa dell'estate italiana, il capodanno dell'estate in Riviera. Una notte unica, indimenticabile, una notte per tutti, giovani e meno giovani.
Dal tramonto all'alba i 110 chilometri della Riviera Adriatica dell'Emilia Romagna sono un'esplosione di luci, suoni, immagini, colori.
È una festa che ha come scenario tutto il territorio: la spiaggia, i viali dello shopping, le piazze, i locali, i ristoranti. Il programma comprende concerti musicali, performance teatrali, illuminazioni a tema, feste sulla spiaggia, scenografie e arredi urbani nel segno del rosa, fuochi d'artificio.
Con la Notte Rosa la Riviera esprime i suoi tratti più autentici: la cultura dell'ospitalità, il divertimento per tutti, il grande palcoscenico dove tutto può succedere e dove tutti sono protagonisti.
Perché una Notte "rosa"? La Notte Rosa indica che la Riviera è il luogo dell'accoglienza, dell'ospitalità, della gentilezza, delle relazioni sociali, degli incontri tra persone, dei sentimenti; la Notte Rosa è dunque anche la notte dell'amore e nell'amore ci si riconosce tutti.

Aspettando il vento - LA SCAROCCIATA by RICCIONE TV ™ La gara "a chiamata" si terrà a Riccione il primo week-end di vento con min. 12 nodi di scirocco nel periodo 5 aprile-4 maggio. E' prevista la partenza dalla Zona di Spiaggia nr. 15, a sud di Riccione, sede della Associazione Surfing Club, con arrivo alla Zona di Spiaggia 151, a nord di Riccione, sede della Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Riccione 151-H2O Sports. Le iscrizioni avranno inizio alle ore 09.00, del giorno di regata, direttamente sulla Spiaggia della Zona nr. 15, con un costo pro capite di € 20 (tutti gli iscritti verranno omaggiati di una maglietta e gadget vari). Tutti i partecipanti dovranno, obbligatoriamente, essere dotati di corpetto salvagente e casco protettivo, si consiglia altresì assicurazione per la responsabilità civile nei confronti di terzi. La manifestazione prevede una long-distance con partenza circa alle ore 12.30 dalla zona 15 che verrà avvisata con un anticipo di 30 minuti con segnali acustici (trombe nautiche) gli atleti dovranno raggiungere le vicinanze delle due imbarcazioni starter che si troveranno a circa 400 mt. dalla riva e al traverso della Zona 15. Sarà data prima la partenza ai Windsurf e poi a distanza di 10 min. la partenza ai Kitesurf. La partenza sarà chiamata dalle 2 imbarcazioni starter allineate e in movimento, con segnale acustico e bandiere di colore giallo, e la navigazione si svolgerà lungo il litorale con direzione sud-nord con andatura lasco-traverso ad una distanza di 400 mt. dalla costa. In caso di partenza annullata, la stessa sarà segnalata con bandiere rosse e segnali acustici dalle stesse imbarcazioni (ulteriori dettagli relativi alla partenza saranno comunicati durante lo Skippers Meeting). Il percorso prevede tre boe di disimpegno: la boa 1 (posizionata a circa 400 mt dalla costa) antistante Piazzale Roma e dovrà essere lasciata sulla destra, la boa 2 (posizionata a circa 400 mt dalla costa) antistante Piazzale Alba anche questa sarà lasciata sulla destra, la boa 3 a circa 600 mt. dalla costa di fronte alla Spiaggia 151 (leggermente posizionata più a Nord) che sarà lasciata sulla sinistra, con arrivo nella corsia di entrata della Spiaggia 151. In caso di difficoltà, i concorrenti potranno chiedere l'intervento delle imbarcazioni adibite all'assistenza, alzando il braccio destro. Si raccomanda a tutti i partecipanti il massimo rispetto delle regole di navigazione sotto costa e delle norme relative alle precedenze. Sulla battigia verranno presi gli arrivi per la classifica finale che verrà utilizzata per la seconda heat. Seconda heat: gara di Hang Time seguirà l'ordine di arrivo della heat precedente, e si svolgerà con quattro concorrenti alla volta che si esibiranno in salti che verranno cronometrati da nr. 4 giudici. Passera il turno un solo concorrente a heat. La premiazione avverrà alle ore 18.30 presso la Spiaggia 151 ed a seguire estrazione di gadget per tutti i partecipanti.
