Il sindacato statunitense degli assistenti di volo ha chiesto ufficialmente alla più importante compagnia del mondo di attivare dei filtri anti-porno sulle connessioni wireless per i passeggeri.
Sebbene il servizio sia limitato a pochi voli interni (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco e Miami) la questione è esplosa in tutta la sua gravità. La fruizione di contenuti porno non solo può mettere a disagio alcuni passeggeri, ma anche gli stessi operatori di volo.
Ora, al momento pare che American Airline non abbia alcuna intenzione di intervenire. "Il fatto che i clienti guardino contenuti inappropriati in volo non è una novità per i nostri equipaggi, che di fatto hanno sempre gestito la situazione con successo", ha sottolineato il portavoce della Compagnia Tim Smith. Hardware/software co-design comes of age
The concurrent design and verification of hardware and software has become a reality thanks to a plethora of resources in ESL flows, emulation, modeling and standards, and more.
There once was a time when system design was completely serial. Entire hardware platforms were designed, prototyped, debugged, and virtually completed before any software development began. Of course, such methodologies corresponded to the days of much broader market windows. The very idea of such a quaint approach is enough to make one snicker.
Today, it’s quite different. Those market windows have narrowed to a sliver. Hardware development typically lags far behind software, but no one can afford to wait for hardware prototypes to begin shaking out the system’s drivers, operating system, and bus protocols. It’s become imperative for the software-development process to begin as early as possible so the software and hardware can be verified together.
But how is this to be done when silicon is essentially unavailable, or at best difficult to gain access to? Additionally, in this early stage of a system design cycle, the final specifications are a moving target. There’s the problem of setting up a testbench for the device. Often, the information on which you’ll base debug and performance analysis is incomplete. And on top of all of that, the hardware platform itself includes heterogeneous multicores with complex interconnect, memory hierarchy, and multiple dependent software stacks.
Fortunately for design teams, the means by which software can be effectively verified for a substantially non-existent hardware platform have come a long way. To be sure, one part of the solution has been an increased reliance on so-called platform systems-on-a-chip (SoCs), a genericized hardware architecture that draws from an established, known-good IP portfolio. Such methodologies can help stack the deck in favor of the design team when it comes to software development.
But for those intrepid souls looking to build on a customized hardware platform, hardware/software co-design generally entails assembling a highly abstract model of the hardware platform. There are a number of approaches to this methodology. Additionally, emulation technology has improved substantially in recent years, making it easier to run more clock cycles’ worth of simulation with slightly more detailed models. MobileMe: Apple vuole farsi perdonare
Il debutto di MobileMe, la nuova suite di servizi che sostituisce .Mac, è stato più travagliato di quanto chiunque potesse immaginare, Apple compresa.
I disservizi sono stati talmente prolungati, estesi e clamorosi che Apple non poteva certo non assumere una posizione ufficiale sulla questione; e Cupertino l’ha fatto, riuscendo pure a usicre in modo elegante da una situazione davvero spinosa.
Il Team di MobileMe (ex-DotMac) ha infatti inviato una email di scuse a tutti i sottoscrittori del servizio:
“Vogliamo scusarci con tutti i nostri clienti e, per esprimere il nostro apprezzamento per la pazienza dimostrata, tutti i sottoscrittori attuali del servizio avranno l’estensione automatica di 30 giorni, gratuita, dell’abbonamento a MobileMe“.

Tra le cose che (a me) non vanno segnalo:
- funzione "share" di iDisk tanto pubblicizzata, inesistente
- Gli amici che cercano di uplodare qualcosa nella mia cartella pubblica si ritrovano con una rotellina che gira e la scritta "Loading" che va avanti all'infinito anche se il documento viene uplodato non c'è modo di sapere quando e se finisce...
- iDisk particolarmente lento se usato dal Finder del Mac (più lento del vecchio servizio .mac ed è tutto dire...)
- i Calendari sottoscritti si aggiornano tra un dispositivo e l'altro ma non vengono segnalati su Mobile Me (tramite browser web)
- Gli eventi dei calendari si aggiornano tra un dispositivo e l'altro ma sul web fanno un po come gli pare (alcuni si, alcuni no) inoltre se cerco di creare un nuovo evento (dal web) questo viene creato ma poi la pagina si aggiorna e l'evento scompare... inutile dire che su gli altri dispositivi non compare nemmeno...
- le caselle mail vengono aggiornate tra i vari dispositivi ma non vengono visualizzate su Mobile Me (sempre tramite browser web)
e svariate altre cosette... sinceramente da apple mi aspetto qualcosa in più in termini di affidabilità e negli ultimi due anni la qualità generale dei prodotti è scesa parecchio (secondo me), sarebbe ora di sforzarsi un po per far uscire un modello di iPod e iPhone in meno all'anno e ridare qualità e affidabilità (sopratutto affidabilità) a tutto il resto... altrimenti tanto vale farmi fare un assemblatino e metterci su Ubuntu, tanto smanettare per smanettare... meglio farlo quasi gratis (l'hardware comunque lo si paga) Il debutto di MobileMe, la nuova suite di servizi che sostituisce .Mac, è stato più travagliato di quanto chiunque potesse immaginare,... more -
Beyond open source software
Most people think "software" when they hear open source - but there are plenty of other things using open source principles to distribute their intellectual property. We've covered some of these: the OpenMoko phone, the Open Graphics Project, VIA's OpenNote, and even the RepRap self-duplicating machine. But they're just the tip of the iceberg. Here are five more projects that show how healthy open source is beyond the software arena.
The Multimachine is an open source machine tool. Starting with old automobile engine blocks and other salvaged bits, anyone with reasonable mechanical skills and access to some tooling can put together their own combination lathe, mill, drill press, and more.
The Open Prosthetics Project is applying open source principles to the design of prosthetic limbs. They've got a number of active projects on their wiki, and have put together some prototypes.
The Open Source Green Vehicle project is probably the most ambitious of the ones listed here - an attempt to develop a 100MPG hybrid SUV with open design specifications (though with restrictions on building the actual vehicle). It looks as if the project is largely moribund, though.
The OpenStim project wants to build an "open noninvasive brain stimulator." That is, you'd wear this helmet with its magnets and electronics, flip it on, and stuff would happen inside your cranium as a result. They're wiki-based with a fair number of people interested in moving the project forward.
Finally, Flying Dog Brewery's Open Source Beer Project encourages anyone to try out their recipe and suggest tweaks and improvements. They're currently soliciting suggestions on how to go about putting together Open Source Beer 2.0. FPGAs provide hardware-timed speed and reliability, but they do not require high volumes to justify the large upfront expense of custom ASIC design. Reprogrammable silicon also has the same flexibility of software running on a processor-based system, but it is not limited by the number of processing cores available. Unlike processors, FPGAs are truly parallel in nature so different processing operations do not have to compete for the same resources. Each independent processing task is assigned to a dedicated section of the chip, and can function autonomously without any influence from other logic blocks. As a result, the performance of one part of the application is not affected when additional processing is added.
The adoption of FPGA technology continues to increase as higher-level tools evolve to deliver the benefits of reprogrammable silicon to engineers and scientists of all expertise. Apple è il marchio più verde nell’Information Technology e condivide il trono con Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Intel, Ibm e Sony.
È il risultato di una indagine condotta da GreenFactor, per la quale il 70 percento degli interpellati afferma di considerare con favore l’acquisto di prodotti attenti all’ambiente, ma solo una volta convinti dell’impatto positivo della decisione.
La ricerca è stata condotta su un campione di 3.500 decision maker durante il primo trimestre del 2008 da Strategic Oxygen, Cgi Group e Cohn & Wolfe.
Le diffidenze verso gli acquisti verdi riguardano soprattutto prezzo, politiche del produttore e scarsa disponibilità. I prodotti maggiormente considerati sono in ordine decrescente portatili, desktop, server, memorie di massa e hardware di rete.
