Last.fm pays musicians amid calls to address past "illegal use"
The London-based internet streaming site is facing calls from the Merlin organisation to tackle the issue of its previous use of songs. Last.fm has just launched its artist royalty program, whereby both artists and labels take a cut of the site's revenue, but the 'virtual fifth major' Merlin, a collective representing 12,000 indie labels, has insisted this neglects to address 'past illegal use'.
Should Merlin and the artists it stands for let this one slide and write it off as an inevitable byproduct of internet evolution? Or is it only fair that artists should be paid for use of their songs in the past? Warner Music Group pulls music from Last.fm
Warner Music Group has confirmed that its music is no longer available through Last.fm's on-demand music streaming service, Wired reports today. Last.fm users can still stream music from Warner's artists via their artist-based radio stations, because those songs are licensed under a different deal.
However, Last.fm users will no longer be able to stream songs on-demand from any artist on the label, including Neil Young and Death Cab for Cutie.
Wired recommends imeem http://www.imeem.com/ as a possible alternative, which still has Warner's free, on-demand music - but without the overall breadth of Last.fm.
One piece of good news: as a corollary or Warner's move, Nickelback songs will no longer be available on-demand. Leave your sighs of relief underneath. Warner Music Group has confirmed that its music is no longer available through Last.fm's on-demand music streaming service, Wired... more -

Those who thought T.I's jail stint would calm him down in the rap world were mistaken. T.I. and Shawty Lo are now involved in an all-out war of words. Now, it seems the two are done with subliminal shots and ready to speak up loudly against one another.

Last.fm launches free online on-demand jukebox for everybody
Last.fm has announced it's launching a service to allow anyone to listen to music on the site for free - as long as they only want to listen to each song three times or less.
The company claims that this makes them the first music website to offer free, global, on-demand access to the largest licensed catalogue of music built on partnerships with all four major record labels - Universal Music Group, Sony/BMG, Warner and EMI - as well as CD Baby, IODA, the Orchard, Naxos and more than 150,000 independent labels and artists. 'Redesigning the music economy'
Cool news from the London-based social music site Last.fm: You can now play full tracks and albums, and when you do, the artists get paid. It's via their royalty-collection agencies for the established artists, and -- this part is way cooler -- directly to the artists (from a cut of advertising revenue) if they're unsigned.
Last.fm puts it in bold terms: "Today we're redesigning the music economy."
That might go a bit far, but it really is remarkable how quickly the last gatekeepers are tumbling -- how level the playing field is getting.
The cruel reality for would-be stars might be that massive success in this kind of music economy won't look like massive success in the old music economy, at least not in dollar terms; but the flip side is that perhaps many, many more artists will get a real shot at it.
So it means there are more winners, but instead of winning the lottery, you just get to make a living doing what you love. That's not bad. Cool news from the London-based social music site Last.fm: You can now play full tracks and albums, and when you do, the artists get p... more -
