"Housing not war"
Almost 200 organizations and thousands more individuals across Canada are demanding the Federal government end its war in Afghanistan and redirect funds from record-high military spending to peace, including affordable housing. This broad new alliance ranges from Canada's largest civil society organizations to grassroots community groups, and is growing daily. (Sign now: www.HousingNotWar.ca)
300,000 people experience homelessness annually in Canada, the only industrialized country with no national housing program. The UN recently reaffirmed the "devastating impact of this national crisis... including a large number of deaths" from homelessness during Canada's worst housing shortage since the Great Depression. Meanwhile, skyrocketing military spending is already at the highest level since WWII, and the government fights a war devastating some of the poorest people in the world in Afghanistan -- a war most people in Canada oppose, but Canadian Generals predict could last decades.
CURRENT FACTS:
-- Military: $18.2 billion/year // highest since WWII // 13th highest in the World // 8.5% of Federal budget // $100 million per month to fight the war in Afghanistan
-- Housing: $2 billion/year // just 1% of Federal budget // The ONLY industrialized country with NO national program // Worst housing shortage since Great Depression
-- Homelessness: 300,000 people annually // Very high death rate (people die every week) // Millions more in 'core housing need', enduring poor or insecure housing.

Coming home: US soldiers struggle in civilian life
In 2003, Jon was leading a unit of 20 US soldiers in Afghanistan in the "war on terror". Today he is heavily in debt, unemployed and homeless in Los Angeles.
As millions prepare to pay tribute to US veterans for Memorial Day on May 26, the case of this 44-year-old former platoon sergeant, and growing numbers of others like him, highlights the enduring problems faced by soldiers as they attempt to adjust to civilian life.
It is not a new phenomenon: tens of thousands of soldiers returning from fighting in the jungles of Vietnam during the 1960s and 70s found it equally hard to rebuild their lives. Today Vietnam veterans continue to make up the bulk of the estimated 150,000 soldiers who are homeless.
Yet there are striking differences between the returning soldiers from Vietnam and today's modern conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Anthony Belcher, a Vietnam veteran, notes that soldiers from his war returned to face widespread opprobium from a public that were disgusted by US involvement in the conflict. "Soldiers from my generation were ostracized," Belcher told AFP. By contrast, US veterans of the post-9/11 campaigns are routinely hailed as heroes, regardless of the unpopularity of the war in Iraq.
Yet the age-old problems remain. And for many, their ultimate destination upon return to the US is a familiar one: the street.
Jon, who enlisted with the National Guard in order to help pay for his education, never once had to fire his weapon in Afghanistan. Yet the stress of being responsible for the men under his command weighed heavily.
"I was stressed by the fact that something could have happened. I had to worry about the lives of the 20 people I was in charge of," he says.
After returning to his home in California, Jon says he lived in a state of euphoria for several months before slipping into a depression which eventually led to him drinking heavily.
Before long he was struggling to make repayments on his car loan, had been evicted from his lodgings and was unable to find a job.
~~~~~~~~~
Regardless of how you feel about war, the treatment those returning from them get in this country is shameful. 150,000 homeless veterans... sleeping in the streets of America. Disgraceful. Doc Debut : Super Amigos
Link TV will broadcast Super Amigos, a documentary about masked luchadores -- Lucho Libre-style wrestlers -- who wage fights against social injustices in Mexico City. The five anonymous "social wrestlers" include Super Animal who asks bullfighters to fight him instead of bulls; Super Gay champions gay rights and battles homophobia after a savage beating kills his boyfriend; Ecologista Universal fights for environmental protection and preservation; Fray Tormenta, who experienced homeless as a youth, battles against the injustices and struggles of homeless children and opened a shelter; and Super Barrio helps poor tenants resist evictions in neighborhoods facing emergent gentrification. Super Amigos was written, produced and directed by Arturo Perez Torres, and has an air date on Link TV on April 27.
Elderly US pair murdered homeless
"Two elderly women have been convicted over the murder of two homeless men in an attempt to collect $2.8m (£1.4m) in life assurance.
Helen Golay, 77, and Olga Rutterschmidt, 75, befriended the men from around Los Angeles, put them up in flats and took out insurance policies.
The two men were then drugged and killed in staged road accidents.
Golay was convicted of murder and Rutterschmidt of conspiracy to murder. Both face life in prison."
What ugly people these women are, truly ugly.
Runner Gets Homeless on Right Track
"At 5 a.m. on any given day, Anne Mahlum could be found running the dark streets of Philadelphia -- with homeless men cheering her on as she passed their shelter. But one morning last spring, she stopped in her tracks."
Rather than continuing to run by day after day, she contacted the shelter, got donations for running gear and back in July of '07, the "Back On My Feet" club hit the streets.
The club involves more than 54 homeless members and 250 volunteers from 3 Philadelphia homeless shelters. The group has logged over 5,000 miles.
In order for a homeless shelter member to participate in the club, they must be clear and sober for 30 days. Mahlum says, "All you can tell is who's the fastest...You can't tell who's homeless and who's not."
In addition to quitting smoking and losing weight, the Back On My Feet club is helping members take classes, learn computer and interview skills and has helped members find jobs.
a modern Robin Hood?
Japan has seen a string of cases in which large sums of cash have been left anonymously in people's mailboxes or public restrooms.
The largest single drop-off so far was in the city of Kyoto last year, astonishing a 67-year-old woman who found an envelope containing 10 million yen of stacked bills in her mailbox.
Heathrow's homeless problem
It is a familiar scene: 3 a.m. at Heathrow Airport, and a gathering of people are sprawled across plastic benches in various poses of contortion. To be in transit is to be disconnected, but for some of those sleeping here, rootlessness is not temporary.
Each night, scores of London's homeless men and women take advantage of modern travel delays by posing as stranded passengers in order to sleep in a warm and safe place. They play a cat-and-mouse game with police, often donning floral shirts, fanny packs and other travel accessories to blend in. And their increasing creativity — and ability to disappear in Heathrow's swelling crowds of delayed passengers — has prompted the airport to try a new approach... A well dressed, young white girl and a man named Jimmy
In the city of St. Petersburg, Florida, there has been an unwritten law about poor treatment towards the homeless. Last year, the city had police officers slash and toss a tent city where many within the city limits were congregating.
That being said, the link takes you to a story of Amy and her chance encounter and conversation with a man named Jimmy. This is the anti-thesis of some very self-absorbed blogging I had seen last year by other local bloggers on their encounters with the homeless.
I really don't know what else to say, the story just moved me and I wanted to share it with others. An open mind and an open heart seems to be rare these days in my neck fo the woods and it's refreshing to see when someone can be open and caring for others down on their luck.
