Declaring your love can make you appear more attractive
Telling someone you fancy that you like them could make him or her find you more attractive, new research suggests.
More subtle means of making your attraction known, such as making eye contact and smiling, can have a similar effect, says Aberdeen University psychologist Dr Ben Jones. His study found that social cues - which signal how much others fancy you - play a crucial role in attraction.
In the study, 230 men and women were asked to look at flash cards picturing a face with different expressions - making eye contact or not and smiling or not. The volunteers were then asked to rate how attractive the faces were. The preference for the attractive face was much stronger when people were judging those faces that were looking at them and smiling. Link to parents found in attraction
According to a new study, psychologists say that men are attracted to women who look like their mothers and women to those who look like their fathers . (I feel like I have heard this before.)
The psychologists measured people's faces and then compared them with their partner's, parents, and strangers. They found that people are more attracted to people with their opposite sex parent's bone structure. Why people pick partners who look like parents
Women have the tendency to pick husbands who resemble their fathers, a study shows. Apparently, the same applies to men, who tend to choose women who are similar to their mothers.
The latest work from a Hungarian University provides yet more evidence for the phenomenon, known as sexual imprinting. The Hungarian team measured the facial proportions of the members of 52 families. They found significant correlations between the young men and their fathers-in-law, especially on facial proportions belonging to the central area of face - nose and eyes. Women also showed resemblance to their mothers-in-law in the facial characteristics of their lower face.
Lead researcher Tamas Bereczkei said: "Our results support the sexual imprinting hypothesis which states that children shape a mental template of their opposite-sex parents and search for a partner who resembles that perceptual schema."
Familiarity alone does not appear to account for choosing a partner because the participants did not adopt templates for their same-sex parents, they said. They say males and females choose different facial areas of parents to be models in accordance with their general sexual preferences for facial traits.
Dr Lynda Boothroyd from the University of Durham, a psychologist who has carried out similar research, said: "There is an argument that a certain degree of similarity makes people more fertile and genetically compatible."
But there is a balance between the benefits of marrying someone genetically close and the risks of inbreeding. "We have a lot of mechanisms - such as pheromones and smell - to stop us choosing someone too similar to us, like an immediate family member," said Dr Boothroyd. Women have the tendency to pick husbands who resemble their fathers, a study shows. Apparently, the same applies to men, who tend to c... more -

People in wealthy areas 'are most attractive'
A 'beauty mapping' survey by British psychologists has found that people in wealthy areas are the most atttractive.
Too right they are. With decent incomes and pretty houses they could keep me in the style to which I've (never) become accustomed, and that's *extremely* attractive. Plus, the rich tend to wash more (its the motivation to get best use out of their expensive wet rooms, methinks). Which is nice.
In the London-wide study Westminster topped the lovelies list, with the City of London, Kensington and Chelsea and Greenwich ranked next most beautiful.
Those perceived to be least attractive were in Barking and Dagenham, Bromley, Newham and Haringey.
Are you hot from Haringey or grim from Greenwich? Is there some meaning in studies like this, or is it all a (deeply offensive) waste of time? What can we hope to learn from information like this? And what meaningless subject would you like to see explored in a terribly scientific survey next? The Blue M&M gets bitch slapped by The Naked Cowboy
New York City street performer "The Naked Cowboy" is suing Mars Inc. for $6 million over the use of his trademark look -- white underwear, cowboy boots and a hat -- by a blue M&M candy on a Times Square billboard.
For nearly a decade, Robert Burck has been a fixture in Times Square, where he strums a guitar on a street corner while dressed in his skimpy signature costume.
In a lawsuit filed this week in Manhattan federal court, Burck said that two oversized Times Square billboards that promote M&Ms used his look without compensating him.
The billboards feature a scantily clad blue M&M with a guitar alongside views of New York including street scenes and the Statue of Liberty. New York City street performer "The Naked Cowboy" is suing Mars Inc. for $6 million over the use of his trademark look -- wh... more -
