San Francisco to Greet Olympic Torch With 'Alarm & Protest'
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved with an 8-3 vote Supervisor Chris Daly's controversial resolution addressing human rights concerns when the Beijing Olympic torch is welcomed in San Francisco on April 9.
The resolution would welcome the torch with "alarm and protest at the failure of China to meet its past solemn promises to the international community, including the citizens of San Francisco, to cease the egregious and ongoing human rights abuses in China and occupied Tibet." Policing The Pollution: "Don't Mention The Water."
In February 2007 I travelled to County Mayo, Ireland, to investigate allegations of police brutality against the local community who opposed the construction of the Shell Oil Corrib Gas Refinery and pipeline.
Other than documenting horrific accounts of one retired local crippled for life by police, and others who had suffered broken ribs and noses, I met local blacksmith John Monaghan. He discovered the local water supply of 10,000 people was being polluted with aluminium coming from the Shell Gas Refinery site.
Despite laws in place to hold Shell to account for any pollution, the aluminium was coming from the site in dangerously high levels and neither Shell nor the local council seemed to be doing anything about it.
This documentary follows on from the More4 News report, Irish Gas Plant Under Fire, aired in June 2007, and looks at the policing and the pollution in County Mayo.

Muscular Monks
How Buddhism Became a Force for Political Activism.
After evening prayers on Sept. 18, the abbot of a small monastery in Myanmar's largest city convened the roughly 30 Buddhist monks in his charge. The bonds between secular and religious authority had broken, the abbot said. Then he gave the monks his blessing to take to the streets in protest.
That meeting, one of many held in monasteries across Myanmar in mid-September, helped turn a sputtering campaign of dissent led by secular democracy activists into a mass movement led by Buddhist clergy. The country formerly known as Burma erupted in the biggest wave of antigovernment demonstrations in nearly 20 years. How Buddhism Became a Force for Political Activism. ... more -

Genetic Engineering
Ever eat major brands of bread, crackers or cereal? Canned soups or frozen dinners? If so, there's a good chance you're ingesting genetically engineered soy, courtesy of chemical companies such as Monsanto. And if this is the first time you're hearing about it, it's because the U.S. government has allowed genetically modified organisms to be released into our food without adequate labeling or testing
So, has anyone figured out yet that I like Greenpeace? Ever eat major brands of bread, crackers or cereal? Canned soups or frozen dinners? If so, there's a good chance you're ingesting gene... more -

Dirty Tricks? Two wrongs make it right?
Democrats are fighting against a Republican charge to base California electoral votes on percentages instead of winner take all. The campaign is called the Courage Campaign and the the fight call is "No More Dirty Tricks!" For the record, I'm against this change... because it would give Republicans more votes. But I'm not against it in spirit. (And if they did it in Texas...) I mean... Why should a state that is split 45%-55% give all of it's electoral votes to one candidate. Yes, I know there are pros and cons to a state-by-state electoral election. So what do you all think?Separately, I'm annoyed that the fight against the hyperbole party of The Patriot Act and the Clean Air Act has lowered to that level and now launches the Courage Campaign. I know, its not an official party slogan, but it disappoints me that the only way to get any political traction these days it to take an issue and make it into an emotional struggle instead of an issues debate.
