Columbia University student raped and tortured for approx. 19 hours
A 23-year-old Columbia University student was raped and tortured in her own apartment for approximately 19 hours.
BE WARNED--DESCRIPTION IS HIGHLY DISTURBING
(taken from NY times)
"Over many torturous hours, she had been repeatedly raped, sodomized and forced to perform oral sex, a prosecutor told a jury on Thursday. The accused, Robert A. Williams, 31, had doused the woman’s face and body with boiling water and bleach, forced her to swallow handfuls of pills and to chase them with beer, sealed her mouth with glue, and bound her wrists and legs with shoelaces, cords and duct tape, said the prosecutor, Ann P. Prunty. And now, Ms. Prunty said, he was asking the woman to gouge out her own eyes with a pair of scissors.
And so the woman, sitting on the floor of her studio apartment in Hamilton Heights and holding a pair of scissors between her knees — the blade pointing toward her face — tried to stop the suffering. She lowered her face to the blade, but turned her head at the last moment, trying to stab herself in the neck instead of her eyes."
This is only a part of what happened, but I feel the rest of the description is too graphic for some people, if you would like to know the rest, click the link, but be warned--the descriptions are highly disturbing. Colombia: FARC rebels vow to continue fight the government
Colombia's largest rebel group pledged Sunday to carry on in its decades-long war against the U.S.-backed government after confirming that the group's legendary commander had died of natural causes. The Defense Ministry had said the day before that Manuel Marulanda, who led one of the world's oldest insurgencies in a brutal if quixotic battle against the state, had died in March.
"With immense sadness, we inform that our commander in chief, Manuel Marulanda Vélez, died March 26 of a heart attack in the arms of his companion and surrounded by his personal guard," Rodrigo "Timochenko" Londoño, one of seven members of the guerrilla directorate, said in a video provided to a Venezuelan state television station, Telesur. "Our struggle continues without rest until we reach the objective of a new Colombia, a great Latin American fatherland and socialism."
The announcement closes a long chapter in the history of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and raises the possibility that the new rebel leadership may consider peace negotiations in the face of a military offensive that has recently resulted in the deaths of top commanders and the desertions of thousands of fighters. Colombia's largest rebel group pledged Sunday to carry on in its decades-long war against the U.S.-backed government after confir... more -

FARC top commander confirmed dead, rebels to "release hostages"
"Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said Saturday he has received "calls" from some Marxist FARC rebel leaders who claimed they were ready to hand themselves over and free hostages including Franco-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt.
In a potentially major breakthrough, just after Colombia confirmed the death of FARC leader Manuel Marulanda, Uribe said "the government has received calls from the FARC in which some of the leaders announced their decision to leave the FARC and hand over Ingrid Betancourt if their freedom is guaranteed."
"The government's answer is 'yes, they are guaranteed freedom'" if they handed over hostages, Uribe said in a speech in the country's southwest". "Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said Saturday he has received "calls" from some Marxist FARC rebel leaders who claime... more -
Chavez: Interpol report a 'clown show'
Colombia did not alter computer files that it claims show Venezuelan support for a leftist rebel group, the international police organization Interpol said Thursday.
But Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez dismissed the findings from an Interpol report as "a clown show" and ridiculed Interpol secretary general Ronald Noble as "a tremendous actor."
Chavez issued the statement after Interpol concluded that Colombia did not modify computer files that were seized during a raid of a leftist rebel camp in March.
The items were seized during Colombia's March 1 raid on a rebel camp in Ecuador occupied by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. The raid killed 25 people, including Raul Reyes, second-in-command of FARC, who is thought to have owned the files.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe says the files contain evidence that Venezuela and Ecuador were supporting the rebels. Colombia did not alter computer files that it claims show Venezuelan support for a leftist rebel group, the international police organ... more -

Zero emissions lawn care
"Gallon for gallon — or, given the size of lawnmower tanks, quart for quart — the 2006 lawn mower engines contribute 93 times more smog-forming emissions than 2006 cars, according to the California Air Resources Board."
A 2006 New York Times article pretty much sums it up.
But Robert Johnson does something different. His Green Team Lawn Care service, only recently started, uses zero emissions equipment: a reel mower, brooms, lawn clippers. And he travels around pulling all of it in a trailer behind his bike. The verdict? His customers love it.
