    • Physician charged with stopping his car suddenly in front of two cyclists.

Driver under the influence of non-existent common sense.
      -

Christopher Thomas Thompson, 59, was charged with two felony counts each of reckless driving causing injury and battery with serious bodily injury in connection with a July 4 crash.
Prosecutors allege that on July 4, Thompson slammed on the brakes of his red Infiniti sedan in front of two cyclists riding downhill on Mandeville Canyon Road. Authorities said the impact flung one cyclist through the car's rear window and the other to the pavement.

Peter Swarth, Thompson's attorney, said in a statement about the July crash today: "We regret that charges were filed today against Dr. Thompson. The incident was an unfortunate accident and was absolutely not a case of 'road rage,' as some have suggested. Dr. Thompson continues to wish for the injured cyclists speedy recovery."

Watson said he skidded to the right of the car as the other cyclist skidded to the left, "right into on-coming traffic." The motorist drove right at the other cyclist, who then punched the car, Watson said. "He then drove straight at me."

Cyclist Ron Peterson, 40, whose head crashed through the car window July 4, had broken teeth, a broken nose and serious cuts on his face. The other cyclist, Christian Stoehr, 29, had a shoulder separation he said would require surgery.

Photos showing a car's shattered window and what appears to be blood-covered trunk and others showing an injured Peterson on a gurney and in a UCLA Medical Center bed were quickly posted on Internet blogs, prompting outraged e-mails among members of Westside riding clubs.

Peterson said that Thompson "yelled out some profanity and, 'Ride single-file!' " Peterson said he then screamed an expletive at Thompson, who he said veered in front of the riders and "slammed on his brakes as hard as he could."

Thompson is free on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 1 at the airport branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court. If convicted on all counts, he will face up to seven years and eight months in state prison.

    • Higher Gas Prices=Less Auto Deaths

A silver lining, or a bunch of BS?

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Today's high gas prices could reduce auto deaths by nearly a third as driving decreases, with the effect particularly dramatic among price-sensitive teenage drivers, the authors of a new study said.

Professors Michael Morrisey of the University of Alabama-Birmingham and David Grabowski of Harvard Medical School found that for every 10 percent increase in gas prices there was a 2.3 percent decline in auto deaths. For drivers ages 15 to 17, the decline was 6 percent, and for ages 18 to 21, it was 3.2 percent.

The study looked at fatalities from 1985 to 2006, when gas prices reached about $2.50 a gallon. With gas now averaging over $4 a gallon, Morrisey said he expects to see a drop of about 1,000 deaths a month.

With annual auto deaths typically ranging from about 38,000 to 40,000 a year, a drop of 12,000 deaths would cut the total by nearly a third, Morrisey said.

"I think there is some silver lining here in higher gas taxes in that we will see a public health gain," Grabowski said. But he cautioned that their estimate of a decline of 1,000 deaths a month could be offset somewhat by the shift under way to smaller, lighter, more fuel-efficient cars and the increase in motorcycle and scooter driving.

Morrisey said the study also found the "same kind of symmetry" between gas prices and auto deaths when prices go down.

"When that happens we drive more, we drive bigger cars, we drive faster and fatalities are higher," he said.

Morrisey and Grabowski presented their findings to a meeting of the American Society of Health Economists in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., last month. The study was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation."

    • Driving Test, and why we should retake them...

Many people who have their driver's licenses should not drive, period. It is my belief that retaking driving tests should be mandatory for all drivers, especially for senior citizens. I don't just want to pick on the oldies, many young drivers are guilty of poor driving as well. Anyone can get into an accident, but many out there are causing accidents and don't even know it. You see drivers pull some extravagant illegal maneuver, almost cause you to crash, and have the audacity to argue with you on your driving. I'm no saint on the road, but I at least have the commonsense to pay attention when I'm out there... Many people who have their driver's licenses should not drive, period. • Man drives head long into bike race.

On the 2nd of June a man collided with the front of a bike race 15 minutes in to the 21 mile race going between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville in Texas. Police think he was drunk and asleep at the wheel and ploughed into the front of the race injuring at least thirteen and killing one. Although the injuries sustained from a car impact mangling the bike your riding is a little twisted to think about.

The 28 year old Juan Campos has been charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez on the highway near Matamoros, Campos also claims he is a US citizen living in Brownsville, although the consulate could not immediately confirm this.

    • Brooke Hogan Was In A Car Accident Not Hulk Hogan

It was reported yesterday that Hulk Hogan was in a car accident with his family. But, the accident report has come out and that report is false. It was Brooke Hogan that was involved.

[Brooke] was driving in the center lane of the Bayside Bridge when the car in front of her lost control while changing lanes. According to the report, the other car collided with Brooke’s, pushing her into the left concrete barrier wall. Brooke’s car came to rest on the left shoulder, while the other car went back across the bridge and came to rest on the right shoulder.

The report indicates that, according to witnesses, the other car was speeding. Florida Highway Patrol reps [say] Brooke was not at fault. She had one other passenger with her in the car, but it wasn’t Hulk or Linda.

But the drama isn’t over…Brooke already posted about the accident on her MySpace page…and you’ll never guess who she credits for her doing up her seat belt…

    • Child safety seats should be centered in back seat

Positioning child safety seats in the center of the back seat could cut infants' and toddlers' injury risks by nearly half, a new study suggests.

In a study of car crash data from 16 U.S. states, researchers found that children younger than 3 years old were 43 percent less likely to be injured when their seat was fastened in the center of the back seat rather than one of the side seats.

Experts already recommend that parents position car seats in the center of the rear seat, and the current findings bolster that advice, according to Michael J. Kallan and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, only 28 percent of children in their study were sitting in that position at the time of the car accident, the researchers report in the journal Pediatrics.

There are obstacles to placing a car seat in the center position, Kallan's team acknowledges.

    • Woman crashes into McDonald's

A 90-year-old woman accidentally backed into a McDonald's restaurant, disrupting a bingo game and sending a couple to the hospital with minor injuries.

Lois Weber told police one of her tennis shoes became stuck under the gas pedal on her 2004 Cadillac, causing her to lose control and back into the restaurant Wednesday. She said she recently changed shoe brands and was not used to the wider fit.

No tickets were issued. Weber, who has a valid driver's license, was able to drive her car home.

Police said the car crashed into a wall and window of the restaurant in the Broad Ripple neighborhood on the north side of the city. The car pushed John Atkinson, 80, and his wife Beverly, 75, both of Indianapolis, who were playing bingo.

The couple suffered cuts on their hands from broken glass.

A car plowed into a crowd that had gathered to watch a street race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring at least four, police said.

Witnesses said they had just watched two cars in the illegal street race speed past when a car without any lights on came up behind them and veered into a crowd of about 50.

"There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27, whose father was among the dead.
