    • Green gym uses human-powered energy

The opening of Portland’s The Green Microgym this week seems like a perfect complement to the announcement of M2E’s kinetic charger, which can generate energy from motion. Adam Boesel, The Green Microgym’s owner, doctored up spin bikes with weed whacker motors and truck alternators so that patrons can create energy to help power the 2,800 foot space.

According to DailyTech, the Team Dynamo and Spin Bikes at the gym can each generate up to 75 watts per hour. Next on Boesel’s list is generating power from elliptical trainers.

At first, patrons will probably generate about 25 percent of the gym’s power. But Boesel hopes that eventually they will be to generate all of it.

The Green Microgym follows in the footsteps of Hong Kong’s California Fitness gym, which uses gym-goers’ energy to power light fixtures.

    • Calories come off and lights come on

"Welcome to people-powered exercise for a small planet."
      way to go Portland!

---click on link for full article---
PORTLAND, ORE. -- As Adam Boesel pedals an exercise bike, he sends power to a generator that converts his workout calories into electricity. Across the room in his small eco-friendly gym are half a dozen energy-efficient treadmills. On the roof, solar arrays gather more natural energy.

In Boesel's new gym, people will not only slim their waistlines, they will also shrink their carbon footprint.

Welcome to people-powered exercise for a small planet.

Boesel says the Green Microgym -- which is to open Friday in the eclectic Alberta Arts district of northeast Portland -- is the first fitness center in the country to use solar power as well as human-powered cycling and cardio machines to generate renewable energy.

"We are creating a neighborhood gym that is as comfortable and effective as any other," he said. "At the same time, our members are doing their part to help the Earth."

Boesel recently showed off the Human Dynamo prototype, an exercise machine consisting of four spin bikes attached to a small generator. As he pedaled one of the human-powered bikes, a digital readout showed the amount of watts, a measure of power, that he was producing by pedaling and turning an arm crank that strengthens the upper body, he said. As many as four riders can propel the prototype system, which can produce 200 watts to 600 watts of energy an hour.

    • Man wins sexual discrimination claim against club

The Nevada Equal Rights Commission has determined the Las Vegas Athletic Club was discriminating when it offered free enrollment at its gyms to women and not men. But enforcing the ruling may be tough.

The man who brought this complaint against the athletic club says this ruling is a major step for civil rights and is a wake up call for all of those Strip night clubs that offer free perks for ladies. But others say the ruling probably won't hold up in court.

A promotional sign that sometimes sits outside the LVAC offering women free enrollment is what triggered Todd Phillips to take some action -- filing a complaint with the Equal Rights Commission saying the offer was discriminatory against men.

This could potentially affect "ladies night" and nightclub covers in the future as well.

    • Smart Bra

Working out today takes gear: sweat-wicking shirts, GPS monitors, online training coaches that remind you why you were cut from JV football. Turns out, this is just the beginning. New tools under development will soon make sure there's no missed step, poor form, or lagging pace you don't know about in real time.

      Smart Bra
Even small breasts can bounce up to 3 inches during exercise, causing significant discomfort. Researchers in Australia are using motion capture to design a bra that dynamically adjusts cup and strap stiffness as a woman moves around.

      Ear Sensor
The e-AR from Sensixa is a cufflink-sized device that tucks behind a runner's ear like a Bluetooth headset to measure shockwaves through the skeleton. It calculates stats like step frequency, acceleration, and stride.

      Cooling Shoe
Avacore is developing a cooling shoe based on the company's CoreControl glove currently used on NFL sidelines. Why? Rapidly cooling hands and feet is a safer and more efficient way to prevent overheating than water buckets or mist fans.

    • Built in Kabul

Built in Kabul is a 6-minute film about a side of Afghanistan you haven?t seen.

There is an unfamiliar sound in Kabul-it is the clink of metal hitting metal. It is hard not to notice the young men who are eagerly congregating in small rooms.

No, these men are not gathering to form new terrorism cells, but to pump iron?

Bodybuilding has become enormously popular among hundreds young men in this war torn country. There are over fifty new weight lifting gyms in Kabul alone, using old weights from the Soviet invasion in the 70?s.

There are ten-foot tall handmade billboards of Arnold Schwarzenegger?s muscular image overlooking the city as it struggles to rebuild its citizens and itself as a country.

Shoib Satar is one of these young bodybuilders who sees this sport as a way Afghans can better themselves.

As young men become ?strong? and ?independent? so does their country. Shoib has great hopes for the future of his people and his home in the new film by Brent E. Huffman entitled Built in Kabul.
