Lunar eclipse 'a comin
The last lunar eclipse until 2010 will take place on Wednesday night, and billions of people around the world will be able to watch (weather permitting). The moon will morph into a glowing, coppery ball, creating the same conditions that saved Christopher Columbus and his crew more than 500 years ago. Isn't it amazing how a seemingly insiginificant astronomical event can have such an enormous effect on history?

Whites = Minority by 2050
Immigration will drive 82% of the U.S. population growth between now and 2050, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center. It's long and tedious, so here's the highlights: 1) The U.S. population will increase by nearly 50% by 2050 2) The Hispanic population will tripple 3) Whites, who currently account for two-thirds of the population, will become a minority (47%) 4) Within two decades the proportion of immigrants in the United States will surpass the peak reached more than a century ago. NOTE: The study does not include the impact of illegal immigrants. Nor does it factor in possible changes in immigration policies. "Pausing" Troop Pull-Out in Iraq
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is endorsing a "pause" in troop reductions in Iraq after 30,000 U.S. soldiers are sent home this summer. Gates has previously expressed hope to pull-out an additional 100,000 troops by the end of the year. But after meeting with American commanders in Baghdad, the defense secretary told reporters he wants a "period of evaluation" to asses the impact on Iraq security. These comments are yet another indication that American troop levels will likely stay the same in 2008.

Seducing the Super Delegates
After this weekend's Democratic primary contests, the delegate count is closer than ever between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The stage is set for the first contested Democratic convention in more than half a century. If it is indeed a brokered convention come August, it will all boil down to the Super Delegates. So who are they and why do the candidates want them so bad? The BBC breaks it down.

Sick in Space (and a sweet somersault)
A spacewalk is the most coveted assignment for any astronaut. So just imagine spending several months training for the single most important mission of your career, only to get so sick in orbit that you're pulled from the assignment. Ouch. That's exactly what's happening to German astronaut Hans Schlegel aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis. NASA will not say what's ailing the astronaut, but it's enough to delay the delivery of Europe's long overdue science laboratory to the International Space Station by a day. Until then, enjoy this sweet video of the shuttle doing a back flip... and it's shot by a satellite. A spacewalk is the most coveted assignment for any astronaut. Back Online in India/Middle East... but now what?
Internet services in India and the Middle East have been badly disrupted for nearly two weeks after at least three undersea cables were cut. The cables were repaired and the service was restored on Sunday, but the incident raises some serious questions about security in the digital age. The cuts slowed business, brought personal Internet use to a standstill, and fueled speculation of sabotage. Authorities are blaming it on an abandoned anchor, but the Economic Times of India is wondering... could a terrorist do the same thing?

Gas Greener than Biofuels?
That's right. Fossil fuels could be better for the environment than plant-based fuels, according to two studies published last week. The authors claim almost all biofuels cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels if the pollution caused by producing these "green" fuels is taken into account. So why are we just now learning about this? The lead scientist blames it on an "accounting error". That's right. Fossil fuels could be better for the environment than plant-based fuels, according to two studies published last week.... more

The Ernie Pyle Picture
63 years after one of WWII's greatest war correspondents was killed by a bullet on the battlefield, the last picture of Ernie Pyle is finally public. It may seem morbid to publish this photo after so many years, but it captures the very type of moment that Pyle would have written about the war. I believe his biographer said it best: "Ernie Pyle wanted people to see and understand the sacrifices that soldiers had to make, so it's fitting, in a way, that this photo of his own death... drives home the reality and the finality of that sacrifice."
